I am actually struggling to understand what was unacceptable about the UK's proposed solution to the Border as outlined last Friday, especially when coupled with EU's proposals on zero tariffs? Non-tariff barriers can surely be dealt with at point of sale in importing country?

Because it's not only about tariffs but people ...

Olivia, you still dodged the questions.

It's no problem, nobody's forcing an answer - I'd just hate for you to think you had given an answer when you hadn't is all.

(Here's the questions again, just in case you do want to answer though):

  1. So are you of the belief that the posters on these threads who support/voted for brexit are base & ignorant?
  1. Regardless, why is being concerned about immigration, and wanting controls on immigration a 'base & ignorant' sentiment?
JWIM · 09/03/2018 14:59

Any number of technological 'solutions'/understandings/gentleman's handshakes does still not address the fundamental fact that the status of the border will change from that set out in the international treaty that is the GFA/BA/peace agreement. It is a question of dealing with the obligations we already have, under the terms of the Treaty we 've already signed.

JWIM · 09/03/2018 15:00

Faith are you going to answer my question about why you think our Govt is making a hash of the negotiations?

OliviaD68 · 09/03/2018 15:01

I answered but OK.

And here you go with dodging other questions. Look, squirrel!!

  1. So are you of the belief that the posters on these threads who support/voted for brexit are base & ignorant?

The majority voted Leave because of immigration - I believe the polls here. Fear of immigrants is base and ignorant.

That is different from stating Leave voters are base and ignorant because it extends beyond the sentiments of such voters with respect to immigrants.

  1. Regardless, why is being concerned about immigration, and wanting controls on immigration a 'base & ignorant' sentiment?

You are implying I said wanting immigration controls is a base and ignorant sentiment. I said no such thing.

We have immigration controls in this country. We even have EU controls we choose not to implement.

OliviaD68 · 09/03/2018 15:02

@JWIM

Faith will likely ignore you or invite you to look at a squirrel.

Snowmagedon · 09/03/2018 15:05

Olivia that'sa good question, but as for old tricks Confused your with us or against us?

Did we need to apply immigration controls?

JWIM · 09/03/2018 15:08

Indeed Olivia.

But I wouldn't want to have the 'squirrel' become the discussion and feel some progress towards a shared acceptance may be made today

  • re the border and SM/CU (may not be Faith's choice but..)
and now
  • seeing if we both agree that the UK Govt is making a dog's breakfast of the negotiations (pissing Faith off).
DGRossetti · 09/03/2018 15:09

Did we need to apply immigration controls?

Why the past tense ? Of course we do.

OliviaD68 · 09/03/2018 15:12

@Snowmagedon

We have non-EU controls which we applied. It lead to 50% of net immigration from non-EU countries

We have EU controls which we decided not to apply.

Personally, I think the UK did well with immigration. The BOE thinks so as well. The UK has problems but these are not immigrants' faults. Immigrants don't govern the UK; our politicians do.

What do YOU think?

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 09/03/2018 15:20

1. So are you of the belief that the posters on these threads who support/voted for brexit are base & ignorant?

This is really most simply covered by 'yes' or 'no' rather than the convoluted non-answer you gave.

*2. Regardless, why is being concerned about immigration, and wanting controls on immigration a 'base & ignorant' sentiment?

You are implying I said wanting immigration controls is a base and ignorant sentiment. I said no such thing. *

This question was based on your words:

^Happy to oblige. It's because the main reason for Leaving appears to be driven by immigration concerns. It is a base and ignorant sentiment.

It is therefore fitting that one would apply misspellings of foreigners and immigrants to remind how base and ignorant the motivation is.^

You are right, I did put my own inference into play (immigration controls) so apologies for that.

The reason I did that was because I and others on these threads have repeatedly stated that we don't 'have a problem with immigration/immigrants' but rather that we would like immigration from the EU to be controlled, on a level playing field with immigration from outwith the EU.

This, plus your statement that having concerns over immigration is 'base & ignorant', is what drove my questions though.
Specifically, why you felt a burning need to remind the posters on this thread that concerns about immigration are base and ignorant motivations via the medium of deliberate misspellings of 'immigrant' & 'foreigner'.

Which leads me back to the first question;
If you don't think the posters on this thread have 'base & ignorant motivations' then I remain confused as to why you insist on using those misspellings.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 09/03/2018 15:25

Faith are you going to answer my question about why you think our Govt is making a hash of the negotiations?

I think they made a hash of the very beginning, by agreeing to the EU's rigid schedule.
Trade talks should have been held in parallel.

However, they were stuck between a rock & a hard place as they could not move on without agreeing to that.

I think the EU fucked up there though, too.

I obviously cannot comment on the next phase because it had t been concluded yet.

OliviaD68 · 09/03/2018 15:26

Ok, Squirrel. Oh sorry Faith:

I think Leavers are base and ignorant as regards their perception of immigration. Again: this is different from being base and ignorant. I don't know Leave voter sentiments on other matters so can't and won't generalise.

Life as an engineer may be black and white but life in general is not so. It is shades of grey and qualifications.

DGRossetti · 09/03/2018 15:26

However, they were stuck between a rock & a hard place as they could not move on without agreeing to that.

What happened to "The UK holds all the cards" ?????

OliviaD68 · 09/03/2018 15:27

@FaithHopeCharityDesperation

Answer the question.

You were asked WHY.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 09/03/2018 15:31

What happened to "The UK holds all the cards" ?????

Again, pretty sure I've never posted this.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 09/03/2018 15:32

Ok Olivia, it's clear that you aren't prepared to give a straight answer.

As I said before, there's no gun to your head - I was just curious.

No worries.

Cupofteaandtoilet · 09/03/2018 15:34

Re forriners and imergrunts (other spellings may apply); I don't have an intellectual analysis like Olivia - thought it was because of the enormous variety of spellings used by ignorant wankers on social media.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 09/03/2018 15:36

*@FaithHopeCharityDesperation

Answer the question.*

You were asked WHY.

Confused And I answered.

Perhaps if I add a 'because' in answer to the 'why', that would help your comprehension.

Here it is again, with added 'because':

Because I think they made a hash of the very beginning, by agreeing to the EU's rigid schedule.
Trade talks should have been held in parallel.

OliviaD68 · 09/03/2018 15:37

@FaithHopeCharityDesperation

You are not very clever for a smart woman. My answer is clear.

Stop trying to have us look at squirrels and focus on the subject matter.

And try answering questions posed to you ...

OliviaD68 · 09/03/2018 15:40

@FaithHopeCharityDesperation

That's it? That's all the guvna mint did wrong?

Howz bout:

Triggering A50 before knowing what it wanted?

Organising itself around the issues - eg NI border?

Creating red lines without knowing the consequences?

Creating red lines that no one voted for - eg leaving SM?

...

Shall we go on?

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 09/03/2018 15:41

thought it was because of the enormous variety of spellings used by ignorant wankers on social media.

That doesn't explain why posters such as Olivia insist on using them on here though, where there aren't ignorant wankers making racist & nasty comments, replete with the misspelling.

Not to worry, Olivia has been clear that she is unprepared to answer directly so no dramz.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 09/03/2018 15:42

You are not very clever for a smart woman. My answer is clear.

Your answer is really not clear at all, hence my asking for clarification.

But as I've repeated several times now, it's ok - you don't have to answer.

Cupofteaandtoilet · 09/03/2018 15:42

Parallel negotiations were never an option. The EU, with their vast experience of negotiation, know that parallel talks would lead to backsliding and wrangling which would go on for years and years and years.

The process has been agreed in order to progress any agreement as quickly as possible. They, also, want this to be completed so that they can move on without us.
