I am no RedToothBrush, so I'm not going to try to emulate her exception OP style.

Here, though, in the interests of carrying on our conversations about WTF is going on with Brexit and the weird political world we find ourselves in right now, is a sort of continuation thread

(Hurry back Red, we need you!)

Nigel Farage can't believe that?

Excuse me while I punch a wall.

HashiAsLarry · 12/08/2017 21:29

He needs to say that doesn't he? I mean the Germans really don't take well to nazism and he wants that citizenship Wink

HashiAsLarry · 12/08/2017 21:45

Just caught a tweet pointing out that he doesn't say whether his disbelief is due to shock or envy Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 12/08/2017 21:48

Farage seems to have overlooked that alt right crowd last November,
celebrating Trump's win with Nazi salutes and chants of "Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory"

www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/11/richard-spencer-speech-npi/508379/

'Spencer referred to the mainstream media as “Lügenpresse,” a term he said he was borrowing from “the original German”; the Nazis used the word to attack their critics in the press.'

woman12345 · 12/08/2017 21:52

Spencer referred to the mainstream media as “Lügenpresse Shock
I do hope Mrs Merkel tells him what to do with his application.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/08/2017 21:52

Ugly violence, the white supremacists chanting "Blood and soil" as they attack.
The police strangely late & halfhearted at dealing with far right violence Hmm

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/12/charlottesville-far-right-crowd-with-torches-encircles-counter-protest-group

woman12345 · 12/08/2017 21:54

1 dead, 19 injured.

Yet another white terrorist attack.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/08/2017 21:56

(translation) "Lügenpresse" = lying press
Note how the alt right, in fact even the Tory right wing, use similar language to Hitler's Nazi Party Hmm

RandomlyGenerated · 12/08/2017 22:03

Is Farage eligible for German citizenship?

mathanxiety · 12/08/2017 22:09

Hoping none of my Irish-Asian relatives in Charlottesville were caught up in this horror.

squoosh · 12/08/2017 22:10

On another thread a poster said to obtain a German passport you have to live there and be able to speak the language. And marriage to a German doesn't qualify a person either. Apparently he was spotted at the embassy because German laws require both parents being present when children are renewing their passports.

He'd definitely nab one if he thought he could though. Maybe he'll marry this French woman he's currently chums with and go after a French passport instead.

squoosh · 12/08/2017 22:15

The Charlottesville situation is horrifying. I hope the photos of these racists haunt these men forever, hinder their career prospects and make them outcasts to their families. I hope they're all identified, named and shamed. I hope.

woman12345 · 12/08/2017 22:17

Flowers math hope all is well with you and yours

the Tory right wing, use similar language to Hitler's Nazi Party
So thick they can't even invent a new fascist party. NF's twitter feed is lively. Can't imagine many countries are lining up for him. Turkey?

BigChocFrenzy · 12/08/2017 22:17

No.
afaik, to obtain German citizenship, a spouse must have been resident in Germany for at least 3 years, have a German language certificate, pass citizenship knowledge test (in German)

Residence is much easier of course: EU law entitles a citizen even of a non-EU country to reside permanently if their spouse is an EU citizen.
Oh hell, the bugger could take up residence here after Brexit Confused

This is one of the rights May wishes to remove for E27 expats in the UK.

HashiAsLarry · 12/08/2017 22:22

math I hope your family are ok, and anyone else's who may be there Flowers

BigChocFrenzy · 12/08/2017 22:23

May wants to remove the right to remain of non-E27 citizens who are married to E27 expats resident in the UK.

Merkel can't remove the rights of one particular non-EU spouse to move to Germany

woman12345 · 12/08/2017 22:27

Oh that's interesting BigChoc. Lovely Mrs Merkel and those lovely human rights.

My DH has just sent off for German citizenship as his late mum had to leave during the last holocaust, and the German gov has extended citizenship to survivors' descendants. Our DSs, I hope will be entitled, but I thought I'd have to get a knapsack and become a real citizen of nowhere as I am not entitled to German citizenship. One DS travelled round Europe this summer and loves clubbing in Berlin. So that's a start.Grin

squoosh · 12/08/2017 22:27

Maybe she could make a sneaky exception in his case!

BigChocFrenzy · 12/08/2017 22:30

Unfortunately, the far right and religious right seem fairly mainstream in the US and they control a surprising number of businesses, large & small.

I doubt whether violence would destroy careers of those who work for like-minded people.

I also fear that those who feel bold enough to be openly violent may have good reason to believe they can evade serious consequences.
Hopefully some will be found and punished

squoosh · 12/08/2017 22:30

Have just watched Trump's statement where he talks about the hateful display of violence on 'many sides'. Er no pal, it's strictly on the neo Nazi side. I suppose he doesn't want to alienate his Nazi fanbase...

BigChocFrenzy · 12/08/2017 22:34

woman If your DH obtains German citizenship, you would be entitled to reside with him in any EU country, not just Germany
Those pesky EU laws the Brexiters hate.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/08/2017 22:36

The citizenship would pass automatically to all your DCs and down to your GDcs etc

woman12345 · 12/08/2017 22:37

Thanks bigchoc human rights are so lovely. We'll see how the applications go.

mathanxiety · 12/08/2017 22:42

Clearly pandering to the Nazis.

woman12345 · 12/08/2017 22:46

Macedonian colleague of DS gave a very bleak picture of what he saw happening in this country. I suspect having experienced the aftermath of the demise of the USSR and Tito. He very strongly advised him to get the German citizenship to which he should be entitled and get out.
