I am no RedToothBrush, so I'm not going to try to emulate her exception OP style.

Here, though, in the interests of carrying on our conversations about WTF is going on with Brexit and the weird political world we find ourselves in right now, is a sort of continuation thread

(Hurry back Red, we need you!)

If nothing else, I think a new party will put pressure on other parties to clarify their Brexit positions, and to move towards Remain (for the LDs) or a softer Brexit (for the others).

HashiAsLarry · 10/08/2017 23:56

It's like 'Allo 'Allo for bureaucrats.
Maybe that's where we've gone wrong. Maybe dd went in and said 'i was just pissing by...'

Valentine2 · 11/08/2017 00:13

I don't think it is all about putting pressure on other parties to clarify their positions. I think we now need to think far deeper than that. We need to think at the level of those Leavers who are having a wobble because they can see this mess with open eyes. That kind of tilt is coming but I don't think there is yet enough in there to say we have shifted the narrative. This time needs to be used for thorough dialogue. That, alongwith the mess by the Brexiteers in government, will do the trick very soon I think. That's what happened around this GE. We really need to take as many people on board now as possible. Farage et al worked on it all for nearly two decades. Sad

I don't think Bristol Oil and Gas really merits being called an "oil company" - it's dormant for one thing, and there are loads of small speculative "oil companies" out there that actually do nothing.

Peregrina · 11/08/2017 00:44

The GE was truly astonishing to me. The wholly negative press that Corbyn received, and the constant talking up of May and the three stooges should have made for a comfortable Tory win. It just goes to show that you can't take the electorate for granted.

mathanxiety · 11/08/2017 00:49

Of course it is not an oil company. It is a vehicle for funneling donations to the Tories and funding climate change denial 'think' tanks.

The majority shareholder of Bristol Port Company and Bristol Oil and Gas is an opaque outfit called First Corporate Consultants. Mordaunt is listed as the “ultimate controlling party” of the group in its latest accounts.

Those accounts show that the group made “charitable donations of £354,666” in 2016. The documents do not provide any details of the recipients of these donations.

(same link as above)

Peregrina · 11/08/2017 00:53

However much they might deny climate change, that won't change the situation.

Valentine2 · 11/08/2017 00:56

Posted this elsewhere:
Climate change deniers are like a cult of rather dangerous tendencies. I was looking at the map of Britain in 2100 if the sea levels keep rising. It is scary to the point of being a horror movie. We basically won't be there anymore except for Scotland. Imagine having to take a boat to get to Bedfordshire from St Albans. And we won't have either Cambridge or London too apparently. That's all within the life time of my DCs.
We need an urgent worldwide discussion on it all now. And we are throwing away the "land" available to us in the shape of EU.

RandomlyGenerated · 11/08/2017 01:08

valentine that would be something like a 70m rise in sea level. The only way that could happen is if all polar and mountain ice melted, which even at current rates of global climate change would take 1000s of years - sea levels are currently rising at around 3mm per year.

Valentine2 · 11/08/2017 01:21

I will dig it up as i found it truly scary. I am sure I saved it somewhere.

Bolshybookworm · 11/08/2017 07:51

I don't think it will take 1000s of years for mountain ice to melt- glaciers are shrinking at an incredibly alarming rate Sad Been to the alps a few times and it's scary how much they've shrunk in the last 20 years.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 11/08/2017 08:44

I live by the sea. Really wish I hadn't looked at that. :(

prettybird Not my DDs either. However one of DDs friends from her International School is now working in the UN having studied International Relations at Georgetown where she was taught by Madeline Albright. International Relations is a very popular choice of subject for third country kids, not surprisingly. I know there are several unis here that have good International Relations / politics /development/law courses at undergrad and Masters level with the option to spend a year abroad, in the US if wanted. One friends DC (this may be what you remembered?) spent a year at UCLA from the Law course at Warwick and having got a First went on to get a scholarship to do a Masters in an East Coast College there in Politics and Communication and is working in a thinktank, but lots of green card problems, which have required a lot of persistence, this is the third job after having to leave two better jobs because they could not get green cards. Another friends DC is about to start his year abroad in the US from the course at Essex.

LurkingHusband · 11/08/2017 10:20

From what I have seen on documentaries, the land bridge between Britain and continental Europe was washed away in a single afternoon.

Imagine being the first human to wake up and see a new sea (along with the terrible loss of life for those now under water)

www.bbc.com/news/magazine-12244964

They even know it happened in September ...

RandomlyGenerated · 11/08/2017 10:53

bolshy it won't take 1000s of years for mountain glaciers to melt, but they account for a small proportion of the earth's ice and have very different dynamics from the polar ice caps.

Peregrina · 11/08/2017 11:14

While we are on geography/geology - global warming will also cause thermal expansion of the seawater, leading to a sea level rise but perhaps of only a few metres in this case.

Bolshybookworm · 11/08/2017 11:23

I'm aware of that randomly, but mountain glaciers are good example of how rapidly change is occurring.

I've obviously never been to the polar ice caps Wink

RandomlyGenerated · 11/08/2017 11:28

Peregrina NASA estimates that about 1/3rd of current sea level rise is due to thermal expansion of ocean waters.

RandomlyGenerated · 11/08/2017 11:32

The geologic record shows that change has occurred this rapidly before though - the Younger Dryas ended with a 10 degree C rise in temperature in Greenland over a period of 10 years.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2017 11:45

From LH's link:

"Since a European Court ruling in 1991, citizens have been able to sue member states for damages if their rights were infringed by the failure of a country to implement EU law.

Experts say the new proposal, contained in the European Union repeal bill, would invalidate claims against the government"

< That's e.g. for violating clean air legislation, sewage free beaches, industrial pollution ....
Remember too soldiers suing for life-changing injuries caused by lack of equipment .... >

This is taking back control ? Shock

The UK ruling class are taking back control - over the rest of us
stopping pesky plebs from challenging them effectively

No wonder the ruling class insist the European Court is a red line - they HATE restrictions on their power to do as they want to us Angry

BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2017 11:47

So Leavers want to give up their rights to challenge harm done to them by the govt, any future Uk govt,
all to prevent maybe someone furrin also being able to do so Hmm

JustAnotherPoster00 · 11/08/2017 12:09

I would like to see a survey of opinions about climate change and leavers, I bet there would be a correlation there, which would further clarify if they are hard of thinking or not
