Westministenders: Strong and Stable Theresa Date with Destiny

WELLLLL

Its just before 2.00am.

So far its the YouGov model all the way. Still a long way to go but, the Cons are not getting the top of their target list and Labour are doing very well in seats they just 'shouldn't be'.

Corbyn is now favourite to take the poison chalice of Brexit, but they may not be the largest party yet.

This is looking right now like 1974 not 1983.

May's potted regardless. I look forward to her resignation speech. Its still entirely possible that our next government is a Tory Minority under another leader.

The LDs are having a rough night so far. They are loosing deposits all over the place as they are squeezed out. But they still might hold the balance of power yet. Though they are pledged not to go into coalition.

Another election in the autumn? Brexit delayed and going soft and squishy?

Wow, Corbyn's majority. I don't think I have ever seen a majority quite as big as that before.

Tbf, I could see SF being able to justify sitting if it would keep a soft border between NI and ROI.

If you swap out the word 'majority' for another word, that is almost exactly what I said in my dream the other night...

whatwouldrondo · 09/06/2017 03:16

I knew we had done it, not winning it back would have gone against everything I have seen and heard in the last week and especially today. Glad to have Vince back as MP and in parliament.

Tania Mathias is a decent MP as Tory MPs go but whilst she was liberal leaning she had little voice in a May government especially representing a Remain constituency. She stood up for humanitarian causes including the rights of citizens of EU countries but in the end stood by May's Brexit otherwise. She also had not done very well in terms of her record of helping local people, maybe she was swamped by the letters and emails from remainers, but taking two months to respond on other issues as well was in sharp contrast to Vince who always responded within a couple of days and had helped a lot of local people over the years. The other thing that did for her was the local campaign, or rather lack of it in comparison to the Libdems. Apart from a flier at the start of the campaign, nothing that came through the letter box even had her name on it, May's focus on her leadership and the national campaign undermined her locally.

Word from Hastings is that it is very, very close. But the Tories think they have just squeaked it and that Amber Rudd will be back

whatwouldrondo · 09/06/2017 03:17

Glad? Grin

Bath too

Eeeeeowwwfftz · 09/06/2017 03:18

People go on about how pollsters get things wrong, but it's the media that's missed the story this time round.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 09/06/2017 03:18

lucy manning @lucymanning
Tim Farron expected to win by possibly only few hundred votes. Declaration shortly

squoosh · 09/06/2017 03:19

My constituency of Glasgow North has been held by SNP. Only just over 1000 votes between him and the Labour candidate though. Surprised it was that close.

squoosh · 09/06/2017 03:20

I think that's the outfit she was wearing when she was pictured holding Trump's hand.

whatwouldrondo · 09/06/2017 03:22

Twickenham result
Vince Cable (Liberal Democrat) 34,969
Tania Mathias (Conservative) 25,207
Katherine Dunne (Labour) 6,114
Majority 9,762
Turnout 79.7% (the highest in the UK so far)

Almost 10k majority almost back to the 2010 result (12000 majority)

LemonSalad · 09/06/2017 03:23

Laura Kuenssberg‏ @bbclaurak
Hearing Cruddas held Dagenham for Labour

Hmm, must be very close then, fingers crossed!

RhythmAndStealth · 09/06/2017 03:23

Bit late to start thanking the coppers for their service Theresa. Stable door horse bolted.

ClashCityRocker · 09/06/2017 03:24

Oh she managed to get stability in there....

mathanxiety · 09/06/2017 03:24

South Down is a loss for the SDLP (Social Democratic Labour Party, a left leaning nationalist party). SF has positioned itself as a left leaning, progressive, nationalist party, and the SDLP share of votes in South Down has been diminishing over the years.

The significance is that SF will not take their seats in Westminster.
