Interesting article on Brexit and the City

www.theguardian.com/business/2017/feb/01/eu-brexit-deal-city-leaked-report-european-parliament-article-50

AlternativeLies · 01/02/2017 14:04

Not sure Debbie that article your reading is that reflective of the whole of Germany. Although Merkel may have lost some sway it is Schulz that is gaining support and he is still a moderate Pro-European.

In terms of nationwide polling everyone I have seen so far has the CDU still ahead, but if 2016 taught me anything it is never to put to much stock into a political opinion poll.

SemiPermanent · 01/02/2017 14:10

Why is it actually ironic that some people who are reasonably well-off are opposed to Trump and Brexit? I'm not seeing why there's some searing irony in that?

Not ironic that they're opposed to Trump & Brexit, no.

If you don't get the nuance the world is not going to implode, so worry not.

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 01/02/2017 14:19

I think it was bbc website if anyone interested. What struck me was idea people in Germany don't feel they are allowed to express concern with merkel immigration policy. When people feels suppressed like this it becomes silent simmering which as we know doesn't go away it just gains traction. Of course it may not reflect whole of Germany but at same time there is clearly major discord there.

SemiPermanent · 01/02/2017 14:21

Just checked the 'give Trump a state visit' petition - it's at nearly 219,000 signatures now. 😂

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 01/02/2017 14:25

Wrong interesting that the flow of this nature of article is increasing GrinGrin and has now appeared in the guardian and from eu source!!

boredofbrexit · 01/02/2017 14:28

and the telegraph is leaning as far to the left as the eiffel tower. strange days.

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 01/02/2017 14:36

Is it bored. I used to read it on line but not now it's behind pay wall.

WrongTrouser · 01/02/2017 15:12

Indeed Debbie Smile

boredofbrexit · 01/02/2017 15:29

good call debbie as not great shakes.

howabout · 01/02/2017 16:29

Sorry Debbie didn't mean to provoke Grin

Neatly illustrates the pickle the PLP find themselves in. If they had aired their differences properly re Brexit instead of concentrating on internal personality politics and leadership coups perhaps things would be different. Sadly, I agree, they are not learning the lesson.

Anyone else see Peter Bone in PMQs mocking the LibDems not turning up to debate the A50 bill they are so keen to amend and vote against? Grin

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 01/02/2017 16:57

No, I'm afraid I really don't get the nuance. It would be interesting to know what the irony is, but if no-one feels like explaining, that's fine.

howabout · 01/02/2017 17:02

Rod Liddle on the demise of "liberalism". Perhaps this will help with the nuance.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/c/uk-politics-38802487

SemiPermanent · 01/02/2017 17:12

Saw that the other night howabout, that explains it well.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 01/02/2017 17:19

oookay. Liddle (who wouldn't normally be my first port of call for nuance, but he does make some committed arguments) argues that leftist liberalism has had its day, and was fundamentally over-invested in identity politics, of which the leave and Trump voters have had enough. These voters are seeking a more just society in which the rich will pay more into the pot etc.

My disagreements with that and with Liddle can probably be taken as read - still don't know why it means Scottish voters who are anti-Brexit and anti-Trump are particularly risible, though.

http://www.infowars.com/video-the-truth-about-trumps-muslim-ban/

Explains quite a few of the reasons why I was vexed at the hysteria surrounding Trump's 'Muslim ban' (the one that wasn't in fact a Muslim Ban at all...)

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 01/02/2017 17:57

That's right. He just happened to ban quite a lot of Muslims. Having said that's exactly what he was going to do. Coincidence!

boredofbrexit · 01/02/2017 18:03

Coincidentally using Obamas paperwork...oh and thats where he copied the idea of a wall from too (although obama preferred a fence but hey).

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 01/02/2017 18:24

Christ that man makes Liddle look calm and reasonable! His shouting about hysteria and calling people morons - now that's Ironic!

He's a spitting hissing frother flashing up images from tabloids! Forgive me if I don't feel especially enlightened.

SemiPermanent · 01/02/2017 18:37
Grin You're forgiven seek!

I had a dabble over there earlier, but the outrage is all too much for me to handle now.
