Not all of us, Widow. Grin

This thread is a very special club where racism and sexism must be overlooked because of the economic worries of the white middle class male.

jaws5 · 12/11/2016 15:56

[Milo Yiannopolous] articulates really well what a lot of us have already grasped - what posters of Bear & her ilk are still not able to make that leap to doing yet. People like this guy don't "articulate" opinion, they are opinion makers. He thrives on stirring up hate, or have not you looked at his wiki bio? He promotes Misogyny, islamophobia, homophobia, racism... he has been banned from Twitter and universities have cancelled talks. Yes, he has thousands of followers, that is the dangerous part. I am not saying that there is nothing wrong with many parts of America and UK that have been neglected for decades. But the danger lies in demagogues exploiting this situation and creating a war that can take many shapes and becomes unpredictable. This is what we're seeing here.

MangoMoon · 12/11/2016 15:57

Does it matter what Milo is, or what he stands for?

Should that mean he shouldn't be heard?

Just because he may be abhorrent in some of his views, should we then completely dismiss the rest of them?

What he said in that clip about why people are backlashing is correct.

If you continue to dismiss people like him out of hand because you don't like his views, and don't actually try to unpick it and take from it the pieces of common sense within, then you too are complicit in Trump As President etc.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 12/11/2016 16:03

Why are you (repeatedly) trying to blame women in the UK who voted Remain for the rise of the sex-assaulting racist Trump?

You have never sounded more ridiculous.

WidowWadman · 12/11/2016 16:04

Mango yes it absolutely does matter who he is and what he stands for. I'm puzzled why you think it's better ok to overlook the hate he promotes, just because you happen to agree with him. That's not really distancing yourself from the hate he promotes is it?

MangoMoon · 12/11/2016 16:05

He promotes Misogyny, islamophobia, homophobia, racism...

Does not mean that he is therefore unable to have relevant thought or opinion on other topics.
(I thought he was gay himself? Quite odd that he is a proponent of homophobia then).

he has been banned from Twitter and universities have cancelled talks.

Unsurprisingly.
Because those former bastions of free speech [universities] no longer actually allow it.
In fact they actively suppress it.
Perpetuating even more the very narrow echo chamber that people are increasingly inhabiting.

Step out of the comfort zone of squashing freedom of expression and speech - stop avoiding things that are uncomfortable to confront.
Read, listen & ingest the views of those who you are opposed to.

Only then can you better fight the hate & the oppression which they espouse.

MangoMoon · 12/11/2016 16:07

I'm not.

I didn't once say "look! Here's a man we should get behind!".

I said "he makes some good points in this interview". That's all.

Did you watch it by the way?
Or did you just dismiss it without watching it because 'you already know what he's like '?

MangoMoon · 12/11/2016 16:08

*Why are you (repeatedly) trying to blame women in the UK who voted Remain for the rise of the sex-assaulting racist Trump?

Im not.

What a ridiculous assertion to make Confused

jaws5 · 12/11/2016 16:09

Read, listen & ingest the views of those who you are opposed to I have and it makes me ill.

Only then can you better fight the hate & the oppression which they espouse well, it's not working with you, is it?...

MangoMoon · 12/11/2016 16:12

Only then can you better fight the hate & the oppression which they espouse

well, it's not working with you, is it?...

Please elaborate.

How am I a racist?
How am I homophobic?
How am I Islamaphobic?
How am I anti-Semitic?
How am I sexist?
How am I transphobic?
How am I xenophobic?

Please do enlighten me.
Seriously.
Because I am none of those things.

surferjet · 12/11/2016 16:13

The point is Jaws Milo is out there getting a lot of media attention, possibly because he's a young, gay, well educated media type, so maybe people are taking more notice of him? If someone like him is saying 'this is why I voted for Trump' it throws a few people off course.

We don't have to agree with him.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 12/11/2016 16:13

Dearie, dearie me.

What strange bedfellows you have.

(All our fault, of course.)

MangoMoon · 12/11/2016 16:15

*Dearie, dearie me.

What strange bedfellows you have.

(All our fault, of course.)*

This makes no sense.

Please elaborate.

Who are 'my bedfellows'?

What is 'your fault'?

birdybirdywoofwoof · 12/11/2016 16:19

Really, you don't understand?

I mean, you posted this video of this shit abusive racist and tell us to listen to him, because he's nailed it, this guy, he's got a lot of important things to tell us and then you say twice, if you dismiss this shit abusive racist out of hand because you don't like his views then you too are complicit in Trump As President etc.

jaws5 · 12/11/2016 16:20

mango you chose to share the video because he articulates so well what you've already grasped, which we remainers don't grasp yet, in your words. Why are you offended when we assume that you agree?

MangoMoon · 12/11/2016 16:20

I'm off for a doorbell moment now - will read and catch up later.

I look forward to reams of 'you're just a hater' type posts though.

MangoMoon · 12/11/2016 16:22

Did you both watch it btw?
Or not.

If so, what did you take from it?
What points did you disagree with so vehemently?

Please furnish me with actual critique, not just generic 'I don't like his views' blandness.

Bearbehind · 12/11/2016 16:25

Ok, so I can't stay away but that video has truly horrified me.

mango, I make no apologies for the fact I 'haven't grasped' what he is saying.

I'm utterly terrfied, hoffied and astounded that you agree with a man who thinks everyone has the right to say exactly what the think because they don't really mean it.

He is basically saying people are stirring up hate because it provokes a reaction- how can you justify that?

The irony in you saying people should have the right to say what they think when posters on here had loads of my comments deleted for saying something as inconsequential as name changes of other posters whilst advocating that people have the right to say what they please is outrageous.

Apart from anything else Milo is saying Trump needs to be set up to be a fall guy and prove he can't deliver on his promises. That's a calculated risk for the US, they can kick him out after 4 years; opening the same Pandora's box over Brexit when there's no turning back and there's no plan for dealing with the fallout is a completely different prospect.

surferjet · 12/11/2016 16:29

Wine anyone?

jaws5 · 12/11/2016 16:30

Yes, I've watched it and I'm not going to "provide a critique" of his hateful, deranged bullshit.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 12/11/2016 16:34

Yes please surfer

Not on the beer til we have tea Sad

MangoMoon · 12/11/2016 16:34

*Really, you don't understand?

I mean, you posted this video of this shit abusive racist and tell us to listen to him, because he's nailed it, this guy, he's got a lot of important things to tell us*

So, do you think he made good points in that video or not?
Did it give you an insight into 'why' Trump was elected?
Did it make any relevant points about why there is a backlash going on?

What points did you disagree with?
What particular things did he say that are wrong?
(I think he was wrong on the Black Lives Matter movement, and on gay marriage, but I think he articulated well the appeal of Trump).

and then you say twice, if you dismiss this shit abusive racist out of hand because you don't like his views then you too are complicit in Trump As President etc.

Well, yes.
Because if you put blinkers on and wear earplugs to block out the rhetoric from people like him, than how do you ever know what it is they are saying?
How can you ever know what messages are being put out there?

How can you expect to counter what** he says, if you don't hear it in the first place?
How can you possibly defend against his opinions if you don't hear them?

By ignoring things, you are indeed complicit in the rise of hatred.

surferjet · 12/11/2016 16:36

Wine large one for you Rufus

surferjet · 12/11/2016 16:39

Exactly Mango. It's important to know what's being said by the people you disagree with, ignoring them isn't the answer, & Jesus Christ if Brexit & Trump aren't enough to make people realise this then there really is no hope.

MangoMoon · 12/11/2016 16:39

*I'm utterly terrfied, hoffied and astounded that you agree with a man who thinks everyone has the right to say exactly what the think because they don't really mean it.

Because, Bear: free speech.

That you are 'terrified and horrified' by words on a screen is proof, in fact, of the hyperbole that is prevalent in our society which is routinely 'triggered' by words.

If you shut down free speech, you may shut down the rhetoric of hatred, but you don't shut down the reality of it.
