Do You Think We Should Bring Back The Death Penalty?

I have heard all opinion polls say most people think we should, assuming that's true, do you think we should. Four questions, did you vote leave or remain, do you still think we should leave, do you want the death penalty back and if most people do, do you think we should have it?

I voted remain
I don't think we should leave the EU despite the leave vote.
I don't want a death penalty.
I don't think we should have a death penalty even if that's what most of the electorate do want.

I don't think the death penalty is something that should ever be on the cards in a so called civilized society.
I also don't believe that super-states work in terms of democratic representation.

Though I read a report that said there's a correlation between Leavers and those who would support bringing back the death penalty, and wondered if this thread was about that?

No. The case of Timothy Evans should be a stark reminder to all those that the courts do not always get it right.

Or the words of the man who hanged him, Albert Pierrepoint:
"It is said to be a deterrent. I cannot agree....I do not now believe that any one of the hundreds of executions I carried out has in any way acted as a deterrent against future murder. Capital punishment, in my view, achieved nothing except revenge."

I agree with you on almost all points - voted remain, don't want the death penalty and don't think we should have it even if the majority want it. There are some things that shouldn't be left to the general public to decide.

As to whether we should leave the EU, I'm really torn. I desperately don't want to leave, and I'm furious with Cameron for imposing the referendum on us in the first place because I think very few people were qualified to make an informed choice. I also think that many leave voters will find that they're worse off as a result of Brexit, and I don't think that's what they voted for - the leave campaign was dominated by deliberate and calculated lies. However, much as we might all regret it in the years to come, Cameron did give us a referendum, and the people voted to leave. I think we ignore that democratic outcome at our peril. It's a crap decision, but I think we probably have to abide by it - or at least, move towards it and then give people another vote when we actually know what it's going to look like.

No, but only because I have little faith in the justice system, there have been times watchin the news I've thought we should have the death penalty, 4example when those 2 men beheaded a soldier in the streets. But the proof of the crime would have to be that concrete for me.

No. The death penalty is not compatible with a truly civilised society.

And if the subtext of this is, 'is parliamentary democracy or some such system of elected representatives a much better way of dealing with important issues than simplistic yes/no referenda' then hell, yes.

Also the last woman executed in England -- Ruth Ellis, hanged for shooting her unfaithful lover after she had just had a miscarriage . Yes, she should not have shot him but she was unhinged at the time. Sentenced to death by an middle aged to elderly white, male, judge. Still lots of them about.....

God no. One of my ancestors was tried and executed as a witch. Imho executions are just a cop out. Even Sadam Hussain should have been locked up for life. Death is not a punishment for true evil.

I believe prison should be about rehabilitation not retribution and the death penalty is definitely retribution.

Celeste - I think that what this has to do with Brexit is that if there was a referendum on the death penalty, then there is a high probability that the majority would vote in favour of it.

About 50% of people said they would support the death penalty in a 2015 survey.

It had previously been 75%.

No. After the Birmingham 6 and the Guilford 4, I just feel we could never, ever be 100% certain of someone's guilt. I don't even bother wondering about whether I would support it otherwise.

I very much doubt the death penalty would be voted for in a referendum. I think its lazy to link Brexiters with also supporting the death penalty. On what basis is this suggestion?
