THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD NINE

The Tories have settled their scores and May is now PM.
Is it May's Day or May Day for the people?

After careful consideration I thought the best way to sum up the Labour Contest was in one simple picture. May Day, might also be appropriate here too.

Things are moving fast, so hold on tight for the Brexit Ride

All well and good to say 1/2 will be women, but I suppose it's also a balancing act to make sure you have the right people in the post - whether male or female.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 14:57

Loathsome gets environment

RedToothBrush · 14/07/2016 14:57

If Leadsom gets Culture I'd have to say that it does strike me as a reward or punishment reshuffle. Lots of things she seems to think as key things given to people you think she is favourable towards, whereas there are a lot of potential poison chalices or sly digs being handed out...

derxa · 14/07/2016 14:57

Oh FFS Leadsom's gone to Defra. Us farmers are fucked.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 14:57

Not sure if loathsome believes in the environment or not.

RedToothBrush · 14/07/2016 14:57

Leadsom. Defra.

FUCKING HELL.

SHAFTED.

Andrea Leadsom takes Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs

GingerIvy · 14/07/2016 14:58

It was the roasts that did it.

MerryMarigold · 14/07/2016 14:58

Brexit politicised a lot of people. First the referendum itself, then the exit. It would be very interesting to see what would happen in a general election. I hope Corbyn does start his own far left party if it will distract people from voting ukip.

Showmethewaytogohome · 14/07/2016 14:58

I really hope DEFRA goes to someone really good. There is sooo much work to do there with Brexit and food security etc that they will need someone on the ball

merrymouse · 14/07/2016 14:58

The stance of 'everyone is just mean, poor me' from LM and Corbyn implies a fundamental misunderstanding of what being PM involves.

(Although to be fair to JC I think he is just going with the flow and doesn't want to be PM. If he wanted to be in government he would have made a bit more of an effort to be in government over the past 33 years, 14 of which were pre Blair).

CaveMum · 14/07/2016 14:58

Absolutely agree that the key thing is to have the best people in the right positions. I'm just musing how the male/female balance looks compared to previous Cabinets.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 14:58

Sorry derxa. Maybe a junior minister specifically for farmers will be good?

derxa · 14/07/2016 14:58

That just shows the contempt for farmers. OH shit!

Showmethewaytogohome · 14/07/2016 14:59

Fuck - just saw DEFRA hasn't gone to anyone good. FFS they need help over there not a bloody Home Ec teacher

JamieVardysParty · 14/07/2016 14:59

Well, you know, because Leadsom's a mother and all caring and shit, obviously she'll care about the animals... Grin

squoosh · 14/07/2016 14:59

Apparently Michael Heseltine also got the DEFRA role after he lost the leadership contest back in the day.

RedToothBrush · 14/07/2016 14:59

Norman Lamb.

I Love Norman. Mental Health important to me. He is awesome for making it his pet project. Someone needs to, regardless of party colours.

de-lurking to thank you for these threads. they are a life saver and an education.

i did have one question, which may have already been covered (sorry, there's so much to keep up with), which is that if Mr Corbyn is concerned about respecting the mandate of the people that elected him, what about respecting the mandate of the nearly 9 million people that voted for the labour party (not an individual leader, but the labour party)?

merrymouse · 14/07/2016 15:03

Distracting people from voting UKIP was Corbyn's job during the Remain campaign.

The Labour Party could have done absolutely nothing and most Labour voters would have voted against Farage - except for those in the labour heartlands who were worried about immigration. Corbyn was not able to communicate to them.

Showmethewaytogohome · 14/07/2016 15:03

Merry

Very interesting programme on R4 in which Maccy John contributed. JC was just the only one left in the room that hadn't stood before so they gave him a shot. Then with politically infighting from the rest of the kids candidates he was last man standing - so I agree I don't actually think he wants it. But he won't leave. Fundamental dichotomy

Here it is

CaveMum · 14/07/2016 15:05

Won't a lot of the DEFRA portfolio be taken over by Brexit Department in terms of negotiating trade deals/quotas etc?
