AIBU to think leave voters who said 'I'm not racist...'

twofingerstoGideon · 27/06/2016 07:01

...should now be shouting very loudly against the wave of racist/xenophobic attacks which have happened since last Friday.

While not all leave voters are racists, the majority of racists voted leave (BNP/EDL members etc). They now seem to think the vote gives them free rein to express their hateful views.

Until now, I haven't seen any 'non-racist' Brexiter say 'not in my name...' Their silence is making me feel very uncomfortable.

Do you think only racists and Leavers lie? Do you believe everything you read in the national press?
No and no.

But when my friend tells me she was abused in the street for the first time in years - then I listen to her.

Do you think she and others are making it up then?

OurBlanche · 27/06/2016 11:08

That's simply not true So posters who tell you that for them it is not true you will just point to what someone else has said? There are many people on many threads saying it is not true for them Why are you denying them their voice?

Are they all liars?

Helmetbymidnight · 27/06/2016 11:11

Yeah, I misread that.

I absolutely agree for many a leave vote had nothing to do with immigration.

But it did for a lot of people. And if that was their main worry, then...bad news...

OurBlanche · 27/06/2016 11:11

But nobody in their right mind would suggest that those who were racist pillocks before the referendum have changed their attitudes, or that some of them are not feeling brave enough to act on their neanderthal urge. they obviously are

And other sentences and sentiments I and many others have posted that you persist in ignoring!

OldManJenkins · 27/06/2016 11:17

I experienced racism before Brexit
How do you explain this?

It's just another plot to make out leavers are racist well remain seems more racist considering "they want white immigration" what do you have against non white immigration?
So proud to shout you are European what about non Europeans?

Brexit may be xenophobic
But remain are racist which is a lot worse (and ageist and classiest).

Didn't vote so netruel opinion

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 27/06/2016 11:28

Hi all,

After a great many requests, we're moving the bulk of the referendum-related threads to the new board here.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eu_referendum_2016_

Many of you, understandably, want to discuss this subject at length and in detail - this seems a good way to simultaneously keep AIBU and Chat moving for those who don't wish to participate. Of course, the conversations will still appear in Active.

ApricotSorbet99 · 27/06/2016 14:04

Ever since the GE, users of this site have been wholly responsible for demonising and insulting ANYONE who dared to express even the mildest concern about immigration levels.

Every single thread has been filled up with sniggering, sneering crap like "ODFOD", biscuit icons and outright character assassinations on the basis of a POLITICAL QUESTION.

The upshot of this is that you have shut down any opportunity for us to have an adult discussion about an issue that - whether you fucking like it or not - is of concern to quite a few of your fellow voters.

It's now come back to bite you on your smug, thoughtless, politically correct arses because those people with concerns have had to use their votes to get an answer....debate has been impossible. So thanks for that.

If you think that wondering how we can cope with hundreds of thousands of new residents every year is racist, then you truly have no idea what that word even means. Odd given that so many of you pretend to care about "standing up" to it.

I am not remotely convinced that there's been a "tide" of racist attacks (verbal or any other) since Friday. We have always had more than our fair share of racism in this country....ask anyone who is not clearly white and British....and we should deal with it the same way that we always have - by telling the police.

And whoever tried to use Islam and Muslims as some kind of comparison is an idiot. Islam is an ideology accepted by every single Muslim. Brexit was a question. Understand the difference or shut up and stop embarrassing yourself.

WrongTrouser · 27/06/2016 14:38

I'd like to challenge the "Not all leavers are rascist but all racists are leavers" nonsense that keeps getting trotted out. I know no-one has explicitly said this on this thread, but posters have strayed pretty close and it is relevant to the argument of the OP that in our post-referendum country only leave voters have a responsibility to fight racism.
I know it's a long time ago now (!) but a few weeks back the conservative party ran a very nasty, divisive and racist campaign against Sadiq Kahn to try to get Zac Goldsmith elected as mayor of London. Did everyone involved in that shameful tory campaign vote leave? I don't think so. David Cameron played a large part in the campaign. Did he vote leave? No, not quite that simple is it? There are racists who voted leave and who voted remain. There are non and anti-racists who voted leave and who voted remain.

n0ne · 27/06/2016 15:36

Apricot I am non-white and British and I am TELLING you there HAS been a wave of racist and xenophobic attacks, one perpetrated against my best friend, hundreds of others documented on #PostRefRacism on Twitter and elsewhere. Yes, there have always been racists, and if you were really unlucky you might get one comment every couple of years, (I am talking from experience), but now it's much more common.

I can't believe people are denying this. I'm so sad, angry and scared. And people saying we're making it up is a knife in the heart.

twofingerstoGideon · 27/06/2016 16:26

What the fuck. Think of the 'all Muslims are terrorists' morons. Then look at yourself and the ridiculous statement you made in your OP
Or maybe you (and many others on this thread) could read what I actually wrote in my OP?
Do you really think that op. That every leaver is a racist thug.
Hey, why not read the OP before coming out with shit like that FFS?

More denial:

I've seen plenty of remainers speaking up against the xenophobic incidences of the last few days. None of the people I know who voted leave said anything. "I'm not a racist" is not speaking up against racism

I am not denying it. I know that it is true and I am scared as well. Scared for everyone it might affect, including my half Indian dc. Scared of what is happening to this country.
