Epsom College tragedy

I was horrified to read the story about the headteacher and family dying this morning, this poor family and I can't stop thinking about how the children at school must feel learning about this tragedy. I am sure the staff there are being brilliant at supporting them. I remember hearing that my old headteacher had died after I left school and even then being really shocked and upset.

This thread isn't about which gender's most likely to murder their children. I hate when people start derailing.

Also if you don't like such content, why not look for threads that tickles your fancy? Very strange to waste your time on something that's so crass.

Newtonsnipple · 06/02/2023 14:08

Women do also attempt or kill their children.

Put it this way.

Saying you could have a woman murdering their own children, or other people, is a bit like talking about the risks of being killed by a car while you are sitting in your living room.

It could happen.

It has happeneed.

But it is very rare.

Comparing that to the risks of a man murdering their own wife/children?

That's more like comparing the risks of being hit by a car in your living room, to the risk of being hit by a car as you run across a busy road. Blind-folded.

One is a more common occurance than the other.

But to avoid having to face up to the reality of the all too often second one, we have to pretend the first is just as likely to happen, so we don't worry too much about it.

I'm not a 'man-hater'. I have a husband and I have a son. Apart from raising my son to not believe his wife or children are objects that he owns, I'm not even sure what can be done to stop this.

picklemewalnuts · 06/02/2023 14:09

@LimeTreeGrove no, I haven't speculated. I was thinking about it, listening to a radio article and thinking that it's rare for a woman to be the focus of reporting in this way. It's more usual to say 'Bill smith and his wife and daughter'. I speculated in the privacy of my own head, of course I did.

Very often there's a load of 'he was such a nice man' waffle. It was lovely to hear 'she's such a nice woman'.
But my comment was more a feminist response than a speculation.

Mitfordian · 06/02/2023 14:10

The heavy slant towards reporting on the life of the woman, saying literally nothing about the achievements of her husband, suggests very clearly that murder suicide is what has happened. The press must know this and are making sure not to honour the husband in any way.

It's utterly tragic.

It highlights the fact that we are not a clean example of an anti-gun country. The privileged/criminals have always had access to guns and anybody determined can get hold of one if they try hard.

Our gun laws are pretty strict and tightly controlled.
My late brother was neither privileged or a criminal yet he had a shotgun licence, his shotgun and shot was kept locked in a steel case, bolted to the wall. When he took it out no one was allowed near it except him, it was locked into the boot of his car in a case when he went to shooting ranges.

Just an awful, awful situation. Please pull this thread.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 06/02/2023 14:12

What I don't understand is if you want to top yourself, go ahead and do it. Don't take your child with you.

I remember reading about two women in the past, both coincidentally with the same name, killing their children. One killed herself, the other did it to spite her husband. And at the time there were lots of posts on social media feeling sorry for the woman whereas what I have said in my first paragraph here is what I thought at the time.

Surprised this thread’s still here. How do you report a thread?

You have absolutely no idea what these people will be doing, they've likely been awake all night and may be trawling pointless sites, with a view that any mundane shit may take switch their minds off for 30 seconds.

Grief takes on all different guises.

Come to that, neither do you have any idea. Are you always so argumentative.

Bambala · 06/02/2023 14:19

I just had a look at the latest articles she just looks so lovely and kind and it sounds like she was an amazing head and was so excited to be joining the school. And that little girl with her whole life ahead of her, just heartbreaking.

You know exactly how to report a thread. After you've reported maybe just leave this thread alone?

I've listened to her podcast and she does sound so relatable as well.

picklemewalnuts · 06/02/2023 14:23

That's it @Bambala . How does a school population recover from losing such an amazing head and the whole family?

Regardless of circumstances? Obviously if it's as it appears then it's even worse, but my initial interest was that superficial 'lord, to lose the head at exactly the time you need a good one the most.'

And it is a tragedy, regardless of what happened. It's tragic. Tragic doesn't mean random and unpredictable. This is tragic.

Honestly?! Go tell all the newspapers and tv stations to not broadcast the news while you’re at it.

I only ever see these ridiculous posts on MN.

Wtf is a school doing having a rifle range on site!

Shooting is a sport
A lot of schools have guns and rifle ranges
Both schools mine went to did
But it’s made me wonder now why I never thought to ask if they used live amp.🤯
Esp as two of mine loved it.

So you’re telepathic, are you?

But yeah, I reported a post on here, easy to identify how - a racist one - and asked in that message to delete the whole thing, so job done.

LexMitior · 06/02/2023 14:30

Whatever happened, this woman has made a hugely positive difference to the lives of many children. All the signs were she would have continued to do so.

When I moved from London to Sussex, I was quite surprised by how many people from very ordinary backgrounds shoot. I know loads of people with guns.

It took a bit of adjusting to. The first time I was out for a walk with the dog and saw 2 men emerging from the woods with shotguns I nearly shat myself.

What about gamekeepers? Et al.

Sabrinasouffle · 06/02/2023 14:34

I’ve been thinking about this poor family all day as they’re local. Important not to speculate. For info, the ambulance service was called first. Not the police.

How delightful.

TizerorFizz · 06/02/2023 14:35

The issue isn’t really about shooting as a controlled sport. I wouldn’t want my Dc at a school with CCF and guns. There are unpredictable people about and it’s making it easy for them to get a gun if they have an issue that makes them likely to want one. Of course it’s rare but I don’t think any school should have guns. Dc should join up for that first experience. Plenty do just that for their first experience of guns. Lots of sport guns were banned after Dunblane.
