Hello fellow parents, Just wanted to start a thread on RGS Guildford, which our children will be sitting on 11th January 2020. Not long now.

OP posts:

I would agree that is probably positive but it's also entirely possible that there is a lack of alignment between departments at the school. My eldest child applied for art scholarships at several schools. Some wanted to see the portfolio early, in advance of the written exam. Other schools would call in portfolios after written exams and only if you had been successful in the written section (no point wasting their time and energy on assessing the portfolio if you didn't make the grade academically). The latter approach is more logical obviously... to would hope that these amazing schools would apply logic and liaise between departments!

I hope it is good news for your friend. Not long to wait now 🤞

Does Rgs have a waiting list too? So since we have no letter I guess is not all clear because it could be a waiting list??

123EyesOnMe · 05/02/2020 14:22

@R272727 There is no waiting list at RGS

AtiBati · 05/02/2020 14:30

I just assumed that RGS would be on top of it and that the departments would be speaking to each other and be efficient eliminating wasting time on boys whom wouldn’t need to be evaluated for a bursary because they didn’t get past the interview.

But you guys could be right: they could be lining up their ducks! I’ve told my friend and took her her little glitter of joy away. Confused

R272727 · 05/02/2020 14:41

How to they ensure they get the numbers they want they over offer?

Pyrfwondering · 05/02/2020 14:55

@R272727, best phone Mrs Sweet to ask

AtiBati · 05/02/2020 16:11

@R272727 they make it up with the 13 entry I have been told. Not sure if this is true or not. Maybe one of the mums with boys in RGS already knows more about this?

It is interesting how they do not have a waiting list. You are either in or out with RGS!

R272727 · 05/02/2020 16:21

@atibati and @123EyesOnMe thanks! Yes it is strange how they don’t have one. I guess it is looking good for us all in some ways. Smile

paranoidmum123 · 05/02/2020 16:30

I think its the 12+ invite that they use to fill any spaces that have not been taken uo. Again, that’s just my assumption. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in the Admissions Office at RGS this last month!

TaupeAndTeal · 05/02/2020 17:48

Yes the 12+ is how Hampton fills up its remaining places. I don't know about RGS. Quite clever system really.

R272727 · 05/02/2020 17:57

Can someone please confirm again numbers applied for 11+ And number places available? Thanks

R272727 · 05/02/2020 18:14

I think someone said 1 in 4 chance roughly

Oldtimer2020 · 05/02/2020 19:05

Went through this 2 years ago with my DS. Been watching this thread and it’s taking me back. I know it’s hard, but try not to over analyse the statistics. Anything is possible! The school has got to fill their places. Dr Cox says in his speech that he gives at the new joiners afternoon, that in all his time at the school, he’s only ever got it wrong twice when it comes to offering places. He says, don’t worry if your DS had a call back i/v, if they are offered a place it’s because they deserve to be there and they will be just fine. They know what they are doing, so trust the system. P.s DS loves it. Right school for him. Only one who went from his state primary. The boys can be whoever they want to be - sporty/cool/studious etc. All seem very happy. Good Luck!

Pyrfwondering · 05/02/2020 19:49

@R272727
396 sat the exam
110-120 11+ spaces (possibly, varies year to year)
~20-30 13+ spaces (effectively 1 extra class joining in 3rd form)
26 sat the scholarship test (guaranteed offers)
70-80 invited back for 2nd interview (~50% typically offered places, could be more)
44-59 straight yeses
276-286 disappointed DSs

123EyesOnMe · 05/02/2020 20:03

@Pyrfwondering - Halo excellent summary!

Bin85 · 06/02/2020 09:48

5x24 in a class =120
6x24=144
Think the former is most likely
Hopefully not 4x24 =96!

Pyrfwondering · 06/02/2020 11:51

are class sizes fixed, each year, to 24?

I thought, depending on how many boys did well in the exams/interviews that classes may be 20-24... but, we're newbies and don't have a lot of experience with previous years' intakes

R272727 · 06/02/2020 13:23

@pyrfwondering thanks! The odds are not that bad Smile

ErmieMum · 06/02/2020 14:49

Does anyone know of any more Rejection letters that have come out since last Saturday?

123EyesOnMe · 06/02/2020 14:50

@ErmieMum... not heard of any. It's looking like they all went 1st class on Friday...

Bin85 · 06/02/2020 15:03

No I haven't heard of any more.

villagegirlatheart · 06/02/2020 15:59

No, nothing here either...

BooRadley7 · 07/02/2020 08:47

Only one more week to go... 😩

Pyrfwondering · 07/02/2020 09:32

Stick with it @BooRadley7. You've got Reed's in the bag... no stress required Wine

Mantapeace · 07/02/2020 14:24

@AtiBati the waiting is actually nearly killing me!! How r u fairing??
