Can i pass a maths GCSE in ten weeks?

I'm applying to do a social work Masters in September and through this process have realised that the crappy grade E in GCSE maths i got back in 1989 is not going to cut it. So to be accepted i need to retake the exam and get a C or grade 4/5 by the time I start the course this autumn 2019. Or I can't do the course.

I've only just found out. Is this possible?

I've always been rubbish at maths and the thought of this fills me with horror. Especially as simultaneously my EA ex is taking me to court to try to get custody of DC (not did any reason other than control. I'm a good mum so that's not the issue). I know the sensible thing would be to just wait a year and apply but I'm set on starting this year.

I'm sick of being self employed. I want a proper job and to earn some decent money and make a difference and I'd be really good at it. So i have to do this GCSE now.

Please give me ideas about what I can do to pass in the time available!

Good luck. I hope it goes well.

Good luck, hope it goes well.

BonnesVacances · 06/06/2019 11:13

Good luck! Remember you only need a grade 4 to pass.

Exam was pretty gruesome. First half easier than last time. Second half very much harder. I didn't finish the paper but did do workings out on every question just to get something down as they do factor that in. Lots of trigonometry.

Still I'm impressed that I've managed to learn so much on such a tiny amount of time. I really wouldn't have been able to answer any questions ten weeks ago so I've come a long way whatever I get.

At least it's done and I've tried my best. Have to wait until 16th August now.

Well done! Fingers crossed for August now!

You’re doing GCSE maths? Edexcel? We have our third and final paper on Tuesday? Surely it’s not different for different awarding bodies?

Here’s the link to the final predicted paper

imip · 09/06/2019 08:35

Just read through messages I missed, maybe different awarding bodies are different (I’m not English, I find system here confusing) but for my foundation maths paper I still have one more exam - it is 3 papers 1.5 hours long. Final exam Tuesday June 11 AM.

Janek · 09/06/2019 08:59

I thought the same @imip for edexcel and aqa gcse the final exam is on Tuesday. But the OP is doing iGCSE, perhaps that's different. I also thought results day was 23 Aug, not 16, so oerhaps that is different too...

I hope you've passed either way OP!

Hullabalooo · 09/06/2019 09:23

I've done the iGcse so only 2 exams.

Ah, phew... I really don’t understand any of this! And I have 4 kids from Y2-7!

I still have to prepare for Tuesday and today am nursing a small hangover, congrats op!

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 09/06/2019 10:41

Seriously impressed. Congratulations on doing this, in itself - whatever grade you get - it's a massive achievement.

Hullabalooo · 09/06/2019 12:23

Good luck @imip

@Hullabalooo you’ve been on my watched threads all summer

Thinking of you for tomorrow Smile

Hullabalooo · 21/08/2019 23:06

Oh bless you @steaknguiness i appreciate the support.

I've got literally no idea how I've done so it's in the hands of the gods. I'm really nervous but as a sage friend pointed out today - there's nothing i can do about it now. I have got squiffy this evening to keep me occupied.

I know I've tried my best in the circumstances whatever happens.

I'll let you know tomorrow. Gin

I needed a science GCSE quickly, and after a bit of research found that a GCSE equivalency test was acceptable. I then found a local teaching centre who gave about 4 lessons which really supplemented the CPG books well, and they also administered the test. I did it in 6 weeks, having given up all science in year 9 about 30 years previously.
If you are in London, I'd recommend you try them - A* Tutors.
I think it's really important to have someone teach you the hard bits, particularly if time is the issue! You don't want to waste time struggling to understand and getting it wrong.

DelphiniumBlue · 21/08/2019 23:31

Oh, just seen I'm way too late for this!
Hope it all went well.

Woodlandwitch · 21/08/2019 23:36
