Can i pass a maths GCSE in ten weeks?

Hullabalooo · 12/03/2019 00:20

I'm applying to do a social work Masters in September and through this process have realised that the crappy grade E in GCSE maths i got back in 1989 is not going to cut it. So to be accepted i need to retake the exam and get a C or grade 4/5 by the time I start the course this autumn 2019. Or I can't do the course.

I've only just found out. Is this possible?

I've always been rubbish at maths and the thought of this fills me with horror. Especially as simultaneously my EA ex is taking me to court to try to get custody of DC (not did any reason other than control. I'm a good mum so that's not the issue). I know the sensible thing would be to just wait a year and apply but I'm set on starting this year.

I'm sick of being self employed. I want a proper job and to earn some decent money and make a difference and I'd be really good at it. So i have to do this GCSE now.

Please give me ideas about what I can do to pass in the time available!

UCOinanOCG · 21/05/2019 09:40

Good luck OP. As they say to all the students at my local uni -#YouGotThis.

HasThisSoddingNameGoneToo · 21/05/2019 09:46

OP, do you want my son's GCSE revision book? He has his first exam today and hasn't looked at it at ALL. I'll send it over for free. I'll check what exam board it is, to make sure it's the right one for the paper you'll be sitting.

HasThisSoddingNameGoneToo · 21/05/2019 09:48

I'll second the Seneca recommendation. That's what DS1 has been using and he really likes it. It's designed (brilliantly) for teenagers and has funny GIFs after each question.

HasThisSoddingNameGoneToo · 21/05/2019 09:48

OMG how late to this thread am I?!!! Shit, sorry!

GOOD LUCK, OP!

xsquared · 21/05/2019 13:57

How did it go Hullabaloo?

Hullabalooo · 21/05/2019 22:43

Ugh. Done.

Found first half of paper not too bad. second part torturous. Lots on probability, time and distance and Pythagoras. I haven't had time to do whole syllabus so i had to guess a fair bit.

I haven't done a exam in 30 years so it was really weird being in a hall of 15 year olds.. They were all doing the higher paper. Just me doing foundation.

Messed up fractions. Couldn't remember how to do decimal fractions with negative numbers.

I reckon I got about 40-45% right.

Second paper on 6th June.

Realising I need to focus on fractions and pi plus probability.

How to work out what might be in the second paper! Edexcel iGcse foundation.

If you Google predicted paper 2 foundation Edexcel IGCSE maths, you might find that some kind teacher has put up a practice paper covering what might come up in paper 2 based on what came up on paper 1. They certainly do for GCSE. Don't just rely on that though, revise other stuff as well.

imip · 21/05/2019 22:52

Op, I just sat my foundation paper today also. I know I screwed up a few as I asked DH when I got home

I think mathsgenie should have a predicted paper up soon for the second paper.

Hullabalooo · 21/05/2019 22:53

Corbett maths will have unseen topics papers for some exam boards by tomorrow. I'm not sure if they do IGCSE though, as I've only ever used it for GCSE.

imip · 21/05/2019 23:09

I think Corbett maths link through to maths genie? I found this paper light on algebra (thank god!). I will post the link to the predicted paper when it is released.

I’m 47, I’m doing the course at the local college and most are young, however, one man must be at least 70, and there are a handful older than me!
