Can i pass a maths GCSE in ten weeks?

I'm applying to do a social work Masters in September and through this process have realised that the crappy grade E in GCSE maths i got back in 1989 is not going to cut it. So to be accepted i need to retake the exam and get a C or grade 4/5 by the time I start the course this autumn 2019. Or I can't do the course.

I've only just found out. Is this possible?

I've always been rubbish at maths and the thought of this fills me with horror. Especially as simultaneously my EA ex is taking me to court to try to get custody of DC (not did any reason other than control. I'm a good mum so that's not the issue). I know the sensible thing would be to just wait a year and apply but I'm set on starting this year.

I'm sick of being self employed. I want a proper job and to earn some decent money and make a difference and I'd be really good at it. So i have to do this GCSE now.

Please give me ideas about what I can do to pass in the time available!

Thinking of you today. Good luck! x

Holding my thumbs for you

I haven't been so keyed up about results day since ohhhh 1976 😀

Hello all, just to let you know that I got a grade 3 this morning..its not the 4 I was hoping for but I'm pretty impressed that I got that far in 10 weeks!

I am disappointed but can probably do a Functional skills level 2 for free over the coming year and/or a maths Gcse re-sit in January. I can then reapply for all the Masters stuff for September 2020.

I would have loved to have got the grade I wanted but i tried my best and i couldn't have imagined learning so much in such a short time.

I realise it was a long shot but faint heart never won fair lady!

Thanks so much everyone for all your support. Its been so appreciated xx

I'm also open to job offers 😀

Incidentally I did win my court case and that's been the big thing this year so that's a huge weight off my mind!

Have been watching but haven't posted before so excuse me for butting in!

Could you do an autumn resit? That would give you some extra time to learn?

You have done really well to do what you have. Well done :-)

tribpot · 22/08/2019 11:36

Well done - hope you're proud of yourself. You gave it a shot and came very close. You know you will get there next time.

Is there any chance they will accept you on the course this year if you say you'll do a resit of the GCSE in January?

Benefitofthedoubt · 22/08/2019 12:24

Do do do get in touch and ask them if you can start the year and retake in January (which you’ll be doing anyway).

And 👍 WELL DONE!

Winningatseesaw · 22/08/2019 12:37

Well done you. You should be very proud of hour achievements x

Winningatseesaw · 22/08/2019 12:38

Your !

ReTooth · 22/08/2019 12:47

Oh bugger. That’s was close. It’s still impressive that you tried. It was such a short time scale. 💐💐

xsquared · 22/08/2019 17:25

Well done Hullaballoo, that's a great achievement for such a short time span. If, you are able to, I would consider doing an evening course for a year so that you cover more content. If you were within 5 marks from a pass, then it's worth booking a November resit.

imip · 22/08/2019 17:30

You should def see if you can do the resit. I think going through the exam period/revision really highlights where you’re rusty. Have a look at the grade boundaries and it can tell how much more you need to get the mark you need

Thanks all. Really appreciate it. Feeling a bit rubbish today even though i know i did my best.

I was 24 marks off the grade i needed so no point in asking for it to be assessed again but still so close.

Ive spoken to the university. I knew already that their conditional offer was based on getting the right grade and that they couldn't hold a place even if i was doing a re-sit as i just hadn't achieved the grade and in this case it's a national requirement.

So they've revoked the place and the bursary they'd offered me.

I can re-sit in January and apply again to the uni then and i guess it'll be at least a quicker process as I've done it all once already.

Or i can do a free functional skills level 2 maths course over a year might be easier - less trigonometry.

I'm having a medicinal beer this evening as I'm feeling a wee bit sorry for myself but
To be fair it was a massive long shot taking a gcse in ten weeks whilst also going through a court case so I'm not being too down on myself.

What was the court case thing? I missed that. Scrolled back through the thread but can’t find it.

BonnesVacances · 22/08/2019 22:46

Sorry to hear that OP, but it sounds like you are being positive about it. Sad

CoastalWave · 22/08/2019 22:50

The new 1-9 gcse is definitely not easy

You only needed to get 22% this year to pass!!! Appalling.

CoastalWave · 22/08/2019 23:00

Sorry

Hullabalooo · 23/08/2019 08:02

@Benefitofthedoubt the court case was because i left my abusive partner who them took me to court to apply for sole custody of our child. He lost but only after putting me through hell and leaving me thousands in debt.

So the maths gcse revision seemed like a light relief at the time!

When you actually sit the exam @coastalwave, you have a certain number of level 1 questions, level 2 questions, level 3 questions etc etc. The foundation paper only has questions to level 5 and the higher paper has less of the level 1-4. So 22% of the questions levels 1-4, so if you get them right, you get a 4 (not precise of course, because of grade boundaries, but you get the gist of it). It’s been enlightening it sit this as an adult to see what dc will go through (I did all my education on another country, so more bewildering to me!).

imip · 23/08/2019 08:13

OP, sounds like you’ll be in a much better place to deal with the course now. Congratulations on the court case win. I feel for sure with your mark you can easily bring it up to a 4 given your result in 10 weeks. And if it helps, almost everyone in my adult maths course were repeating and my dds senco day it 3 times as an adult before he passed (I guess.his honesty is refreshing!), so I’ve rarely heard of adults passing first go!

TemporaryPermanent · 23/08/2019 08:14

Just to say i am so impressed by what you did especially with the court case at the same time. I am certain you will get there.

I am sorry to hear you did not get the grade you needed. However, for success in whatever you want to do, resilience is much more important than achievement. The 10 weeks will not have been entirely lost as firstly it has started getting your brain thinking mathematically and secondly it has proved to you how much you can do in such a short time.

When the upset of not getting the grade you wanted passes you should reflect and be proud of yourself for what you did achieve.

sashh · 24/08/2019 07:57

Do the functional skills, much easier, one of the colleges near me do a 2 week full time functional skills maths and English, it's aimed at teenagers who need a 'pass' for college.

Sorry you didn't get your grade.
