Are there any Radio 4 lovers left on MN these days?

If so, can I just share my joy at having 're-discovered' it again!

Since moving house, and having kids I seemed to have 'lost the Radio 4 habit'. The kids meant I never seemed to have time to myself, and also the radio reception was crap, as we are in a hilly area, and the signal was poor...

BUT..

DH bought me a DAB radio for Christmas, and my life has changed again forever.

I LOVE all the current affairs programmes, and the plays, and Woman's Hour, and the news quizzes etc etc.

I feel like I have rediscovered myself.

When I was at school I used to listen to Radio 4 loads (for General Studies A level and at Uni we used to listen to The Archers....
And then when I did a politics degree I used to listen to it for all the current affairs...

Ah, bliss. Please sign in if you are similarly appreciative....

I listen to it in the morning (HATE music in the morning)
and The World Tonight sometimes but only if my mate is presenting

Grouchyoscar · 03/04/2008 15:36

I love R$, have to do it on my own as DH despises it and thinks it's a middle class thing

I find it entertaining and educational

casbie · 03/04/2008 15:41

hell yeah - love the fact that they take the mickey out of themselves being so upper-middle class!

very witty!

ipanemagirl · 04/04/2008 15:39

Anyone else enjoy the Nic hitting George storyline? I mean not her actually hitting him but the drama!

ipanemagirl · 04/04/2008 15:39

In the Archers I mean.

rebelmum1 · 04/04/2008 16:05

I'd be lost without it.

ipanemagirl · 04/04/2008 16:44

But I want to hear some more Radio 4 hates! I love/hate it.

IorekByrnison · 04/04/2008 17:17

Hate the Afternoon Play, You and Yours, Melanie Phillips on the Moral Maze, Go for it, and...

The sodding Archers

Everything else is great though.

ipanemagirl · 05/04/2008 08:28

I agree Iorek, actually I hate the Archers too but have to listen sometimes!

But Liz Barclay on you and yours BOAK
Go For It ditto

seeker · 05/04/2008 08:31

What I hate are the programmes that should be fascinating but for some obscure reason aren't. I love Libby Purves, for example, but I find Midweek practically unlistenable to. I love newsa nd current affairs, but hate From our Ouwn Correspondent.

harpsichordcarrier · 05/04/2008 08:36

You and Yours is appalling and on for a whole hour argh.
it used to be half an hour, 12-12.30 then 12.30-1pm would be a "6.30" type show, Just a Minute or Down your Way

I also remember when You and Yours used to end with a list of the price of beef, cod and milk

mcnoodle · 05/04/2008 08:38

I mostly love R4 - enjoy Grumpy John and Reasonable James and New and Exciting Evan on Today and PM and the sciencey one on Wednesday. News Quiz etc are all great. And the wierd niche programmes about dust or cheese or saliva.

Hate mid-week (but love Libby) and don't do Archers. Also find You and Yours a bunch of arse.

Always listen in the car on way to work. Then sit there twiddling hair until interesting item has finished. Was recently asked if I was ok after some staff sat and watched me twiddle and look vacant before getting out of car and leaving door wide open...

Tried to make out was because mind on higher things. Really am just horribly forgetful in manner of dithering octogenarian.

ipanemagirl · 05/04/2008 08:39

LOL harpsichord!

Seeker, I agree, often happens. Long dreary archive progs with original recordings of people talking about hod carrying in the 30s.... Some programmes are so dull I can't believe they have ever been commissioned!

You and yours oh God save me from that woman's voice! It's SO irritating! But not as irritating as Paul whatsit from 'Money Box Live" (hold nose and speak in high voice!)

harpsichordcarrier · 05/04/2008 08:41

actually I can listen to almost everything on R4 except for the appalling Quote Unquote

seeker · 05/04/2008 08:51

Oh God - and I had forgotten the low-level arch innuendo they go in for on Gardener's Question Time!

MrsJohnCusack · 05/04/2008 08:59

love love love it too
listen on the internet now I am in NZ. thank goodness for 'listen again'

hannahsaunt · 05/04/2008 09:16

Love it on the whole but can do without the afternoon play and switch to Jonathan Ross on Saturday mornings then don't listen to anything until Sat night. Didn't like Fi Glover on Broadcasting House but like the Sat Live thing.

ipanemagirl · 05/04/2008 09:56

Mrs JC long time no see! Hope you are well in that beautiful place!

I can't bear La Glover on BH, not as funny as they think it is!

Loads of R4 comedy - unlistenable.

Clare in the Community? I'd rather throw myself into a sewer than listen to that!

Cant' bear quote unquote or the La Toksvig on Newsquiz. My mother thinks it's hysterical. Can't bear Mornington Crescent either.

But I hate RUUUTH from the ARchers more than all of these put together

spamm · 05/04/2008 10:05

R4 household here too - we have it on in the kitchen constantly and it is the main station my car radio is tuned in to.

I love Today, The Archers, and Newsquiz and Broadcasting house and Front Row and the Bottom Line. Don't get to listen to Woman's Hour, but try to listen to Weekend Woman's Hour. I learn so much from R4...And it has been the soundtrack of my life, because Mom used to listen to the same programmes over the years on the World Service wherever we lived...

I still miss John Peel...

ipanemagirl · 05/04/2008 10:10

I love all the film programmes and lots of the book ones too.

I miss JPeel too.

I really enjoyed that series about the Oscars by Paul Gambicini and the one he did about musicals as well. But I can't bear his voice it's creepy!

I like La Frostrup despite myself. She has a great voice

harpsichordcarrier · 05/04/2008 10:10

oh oh oh did anyone just hear Saturday Live
my mate was on it!

ipanemagirl · 05/04/2008 10:10

I didn't hear it, is that the am programme on Saturdays?

harpsichordcarrier · 05/04/2008 10:12

yes, the Home Truths slot

GettingratherGROUCHYOSCAR · 05/04/2008 15:02

Listening to it now, but it's a play and I don't like those.

I' been listening all day TBH I thought Punt and Dennis were very funny this aft

Only started listening to R4 regularly as I missed Jane Garvey but I really enjoy it and I've found it educational.

And though his R4 time was before my R4 time I MISS JOHN PEEL

Scampmum · 05/04/2008 15:14

Highly recommend listening again to a Mil Millington short story we heard about 3.15 last Friday about newborns and sleep. Dunno if listen again is only for a week, though.

I love it. Have secret passion for 'In our time' though bro (works at BBC) says apparently Melvyn does it all from prompt cards and knows bugger all. I think that's true of some of them but not all. Also like 'Am I normal?'.
