Are there any Radio 4 lovers left on MN these days?

If so, can I just share my joy at having 're-discovered' it again!

Since moving house, and having kids I seemed to have 'lost the Radio 4 habit'. The kids meant I never seemed to have time to myself, and also the radio reception was crap, as we are in a hilly area, and the signal was poor...

BUT..

DH bought me a DAB radio for Christmas, and my life has changed again forever.

I LOVE all the current affairs programmes, and the plays, and Woman's Hour, and the news quizzes etc etc.

I feel like I have rediscovered myself.

When I was at school I used to listen to Radio 4 loads (for General Studies A level and at Uni we used to listen to The Archers....
And then when I did a politics degree I used to listen to it for all the current affairs...

Ah, bliss. Please sign in if you are similarly appreciative....

Oh Lord yes. We had it on in the house a lot when I was a kid, and I have converted my husband (mostly) from radio 5. Aside from comedy/quizzes etc, I love the odd little in-depth programmes which a) they wouldn't bother with or b) they'd make a hash of on TV. Since you have DAB, have you discovered BBC7 and the World Service yet? A whole new world of joy.

moodlumthehoodlum · 30/12/2007 21:31

Love love love radio 4. What's not to like? Amazing how something can always be interesting almost every time you switch on. And, although it means I am deffo turning into my mother, I love the Archers.

poppy34 · 30/12/2007 21:32

It is very nice when you're at home all day ..somehow you end up listening to all sorts of things you'd think you'd not bother with .

Gameboy · 30/12/2007 21:32

Yes - someone recommended Radio 7 - what should I be looking out for on there? I understand it does kids stuff?

i listen now and again, love the afternoon plays.

the one about the submarines, how did that end?

find the comedy sometimes up it's own arse.

Radio 7 does cbeebies during the day, and then does slightly more alternative speech stuff in the evenings. Its a good bet if Radio four is either too dull or not funny.

Vacua · 30/12/2007 21:36

love it

always have actually, must have been born middle-aged . . . !

yogabird · 30/12/2007 21:36

me too, oh me too! My obsession with this is why i never get the music questions at our pub quiz! My campaign of 10 years with dh to have R4 every day rather than the weekly Steve Wright's bloody sloppy insipid inane Sunday moron's love songs continues.....

margoandjerry · 30/12/2007 21:36

84 charing cross road was on? How did I miss that

Love that book.

Big R4 listener here. Did anyone here the chap on yesterday's Fi Glover show talking about being wrongly imprisoned for 25 years for a crime he didn't commit. Literally had to stop what I was doing to listen.

moodlumthehoodlum · 30/12/2007 21:37

Fi Glover was brilliant with him I thought? I love that show. Its like Home Truths but funnier and less sentimental.

margoandjerry · 30/12/2007 21:39

I thought so too. I think she's great. Evidently Jon Snow thinks the same

Me,

Love ISIHAC, News Quiz, Woman's Hour, Broadcasting House especially and I usually have it on the background in the kitchen

Can't abide the Archers

DP listens to TalkSport, which drive. s me mental. The phone ins on that do amke me laugh. I can just imagibne Ken from Dagenham getting mad at the wheel of his White Ford Trasnit while thinking about immigration/NHS/education/Steve McLaren

moodlumthehoodlum · 30/12/2007 21:43

I think I am a R4 novice though, as Mornington Crescent still foxes me. (I know that's the point but it leaves me cold).

AndAHabbiBuYear · 30/12/2007 21:43

BBC 7 - good comedy (lots of old radio 4 stuff) in the evenings, drama, crime and thrillers (I got oddly hooked on Paul Temple for a while. And try the World Service - news with proper perspective, and great documentary type things.

Eddie Mair on PM is one of the great joys of my day...

Ayomi · 30/12/2007 21:44

Without Radio 4 I would go insane. And probably totally uninformed!
I escape to me bedroom oasis and tune in away from houseful... often doing ironing. We are all very nicely turned out as I spend so much time up there
I have been called prematurely middle aged (am 30), but who cares

AndAHabbiBuYear · 30/12/2007 21:44

Sheik - do you like "Down the Line" on R4, then?

moodlumthehoodlum · 30/12/2007 21:46

Down the line makes me laugh and laugh and laugh. And I can no longer listen to Jeremy Vine on R2 now because of that show.

Earthymama · 30/12/2007 21:46

Radio 4 provides the soundtrack to my life, i love it! reception in the bedroom is awful and we're not able to have DAB yet...it's my dream!

R7 is good for serials, and old comedy. But my heart belongs to R4...you learn so much, laugh, cry, shout at the radio and so on. The discussion with the coresspondants (sp)on Pakistan was really interesting and gives such a different perspective to straight news.

The Now show and News Quiz make my weekend begin with a real laugh, I can't bear to miss them, but as I did so on friday I'm off to Listen Again.

I was thinking today that I still miss John Peel, Nick Clarke and Linda Smith, blessings to them all for the pleasure and joy they gave me.

Wishing you all a Happy R4 New Year...what would you like to hear in 2008?

I'd like a programme on ethical living and how to make effective changes.

I wish they'd get rid of the love-in on Sat eve, what's it called...they all sit round congratulating themselves on their cleverness...you know?

SheikYerbouti · 30/12/2007 21:47

I donl;t think I have ever listened to Down the Line.

I tend to have the radio on at specific tuimes of the day, so catch the smae progs

Is Down the Line one of those terribly funny phone ins with irate peole with too mmuch time on thier hands?

holidaywonk · 30/12/2007 21:47

margo, what's with Jon Snow and the winking?

I was literally crying with laughter listening to the ISIHAC highlights show today, especially the Welsh jokes.

margoandjerry · 30/12/2007 21:48

oh god that Ned Sherrin thing. Is it wrong to say I don't miss him?

hate that prog full of luvvies. Makes me feel quite violent.

margoandjerry · 30/12/2007 21:49

holidaywonk I just thought he was flirting outrageously with Fi! but maybe I was getting a bit overexcited and gossipy Lynda Snell style?
