Are there any Radio 4 lovers left on MN these days?

If so, can I just share my joy at having 're-discovered' it again!

Since moving house, and having kids I seemed to have 'lost the Radio 4 habit'. The kids meant I never seemed to have time to myself, and also the radio reception was crap, as we are in a hilly area, and the signal was poor...

BUT..

DH bought me a DAB radio for Christmas, and my life has changed again forever.

I LOVE all the current affairs programmes, and the plays, and Woman's Hour, and the news quizzes etc etc.

I feel like I have rediscovered myself.

When I was at school I used to listen to Radio 4 loads (for General Studies A level and at Uni we used to listen to The Archers....
And then when I did a politics degree I used to listen to it for all the current affairs...

Ah, bliss. Please sign in if you are similarly appreciative....

Wow, jura !

And Rob Brydon was a Total Revelation on ISIHAC, singing his heart out to Danny Boy, Tom Jones stylee.

I heart R4, was brought up on it.

I still miss old Johnners on TMS (those were the days), Brian Redhead too gawd bless 'im.

babypowder · 31/12/2007 15:35

Those carols were hilarious, Jura!

I love the story about the sailor who wrote to the blessed Charlotte asking her to slow down the shipping forecast so they could 'finish at the same time' Ewwww!

may I direct you to this thread?

Earthymama · 19/03/2008 20:08

Thanks for that; can Jura do MN Woman's version for us all?

I really can't imagine life without R4, get itchy while on holiday, how would I know anything without it?

Carmenere · 19/03/2008 20:13

I listen to R4 for at last 2-3hours every day and I did even when I lived in Ireland and I'm not even English.

Ok I didn't listen to it every day in Ireland but I used to listen to the afternoon play on Saturdays and late at night sometimes. The thing is that radio is VERY popular in Ireland, literally the whole country listens to just one or two stations every day. It is like the nations subconscious, but that is probably to do with the size of the island tbh.

I love it but automatically switch off when it comes to gardening and food programmes, countryside stuff or some of the awful comedy things at 6.30. The quizzes leave me cold but i love all the news and current affairs.

I LOVE Woman's Hour, Broadcasting House, The Now Show, File on 4, The Moral Maze and From our own Correspondent.

And I love the Archers!

pincushion · 19/03/2008 20:22

Eddie mair makes me giggle - did anyone hear his spanish plane joke?

plane landing at a spanish airport, the captain said
"cabin crew, cabin crew, spanish doors, spanish doors..............

doors to manuelle............

Oh, I actually like the food programmes, and do sometimes listen to the gardening programmes. That aggressive opinionated woman on (Moral maze?) really annoys me though. I love Just a minute, and some of the plays can be very moving.
I must admit though, sometimes when I have been listening for a long time I have to turn it off, saying out loud "You are SO boring!!".
Being american, there is something about it which is so soothingly British, it is one of the things that I really enjoy about this country.
Would be nice if they could re-adjust Archer time to fit in with my dd's revised bed schedule so I could put them to bed and then come down and make dinner to it...

ingles2 · 19/03/2008 20:44

couldn't get through the day without it!
We're serious archers addicts, infact we're archers addicts members!!! and the first song ds2 ever sang was the archers theme tune.
I have to listen to Chris Moyles first though. (sorry)

Only just found this. I love R4.

Today
Desert Island Discs
Woman's Hour
The Archers
News Quiz
ISIHAC
Front Row
Afternoon Play
Just A Minute
Love 'em!

Usually listen to In Our Time but don't understand much of it.

Cannot stand Gardener's Question Time but can just leave it on in the background. However I bloody HATE Count Arthur Strong and have to tune to another station or just switch off.

Also can't see the point of the 6 o'clock news when all the news has just been covered in depth in the PM show.

StressTeddy · 03/04/2008 11:10

I couldn't live without radio 4. It is the most comforting thing in the world.

Threadworm · 03/04/2008 11:45

All our radios have worn such a deep groove at the Radio 4 part of the dial that they can't actually be tuned to any other channels.

ipanemagirl · 03/04/2008 15:15
