Are there any Radio 4 lovers left on MN these days?

If so, can I just share my joy at having 're-discovered' it again!

Since moving house, and having kids I seemed to have 'lost the Radio 4 habit'. The kids meant I never seemed to have time to myself, and also the radio reception was crap, as we are in a hilly area, and the signal was poor...

BUT..

DH bought me a DAB radio for Christmas, and my life has changed again forever.

I LOVE all the current affairs programmes, and the plays, and Woman's Hour, and the news quizzes etc etc.

I feel like I have rediscovered myself.

When I was at school I used to listen to Radio 4 loads (for General Studies A level and at Uni we used to listen to The Archers....
And then when I did a politics degree I used to listen to it for all the current affairs...

Ah, bliss. Please sign in if you are similarly appreciative....

so with you there m&j. loved john peel though. i've been listening to radio 4 since my teens...

margoandjerry · 30/12/2007 21:51

oh earthymama, maybe you mean the Moral Maze rather than the Luvvie Show? Sorry, I just hate it so assume everyone else does.

holidaywonk · 30/12/2007 21:52

Ah I see. I thought you were saying that they had got together in RL or something. JS is a terrible old flirt I think. I saw him once on my way to work on Pentonville Road - he was on his bicycle, waiting at a junction - and he looked me up and down good and proper, and smiled. Honest. (This was about 10 years ago.) I was a bit and a bit .

Anyone else suspect that their DAB usage is doubling their electricity bills? I once made the mistake of trying to power my DAB with batteries and they ran down within about 15 minutes.

southeastastra · 30/12/2007 21:53

wail, how did the submarine play end?

margoandjerry · 30/12/2007 21:56

ooh the old dog

AndAHabbiBuYear · 30/12/2007 21:58

Down the line is a parody of said phone-ins. Had many Radio 4 listeners all of a flutter when it first aired as they didn't realise it was a joke...

And also agree with missing John Peel, Linda Smith and Nick Clarke. God, that man had a gorgeous voice. Did anyone hear his audio diary? I wept and wept.

Tnog · 30/12/2007 22:00

Oh I'm across the Irish Sea and I love listening to Radio 4

Miss John Peel.

Love, Womans Hour, tis fab.

SheikYerbouti · 30/12/2007 22:02

I missed it completekly.

Damn, sounds really funny!

margoandjerry · 30/12/2007 22:03

habbibu yes I heard it. Sobbed. The bit where they somehow made it so lighthearted for the children that he'd had his leg cut off. It was just so awful but they expressed it so the children accepted it and weren't scared even though they themselves must have been devastated and terrified.

I was brought up in a Radio 4 house and dp enjoyed it so much during a recent stay with my aunt that we've now started putting it n during the day.

I love Radio 4, I've grown up with it and tend to switch it on as soon as I wake up and then it takes me through the day to around 8pm (when I might watch some tv).

I have a secret crush on Mark Lawson on Front Row .

And could never stand Ned Sherrin on Loose Ends (the luvvie love-in on Saturdays mentioned below)

beroWHEEEEEEEEna · 30/12/2007 22:22

Love it. It's got me through some tough times.

Breakfast isn't complete without the Today programme. I also love giggling at ISIHAC and the News Quiz while dh (German) sits there looking like this .

Nightynight · 30/12/2007 22:33

how do you get radio 4 in De, berolina? I'd love to.

southeastastra · 30/12/2007 22:39

berolina! i was thinking of you earlier, i found some more posters. planets and stars and mammal type things.

bahKewcHumbug · 30/12/2007 22:44

I don;t get to listen as much as I did pre-DS and even have to rely on the email update to keep in touch with the Archers. I miss Linda Smith too, saw her live at Windsor Arts Centre whilst she was having treatment or shortly after I think. She hadn't announced it at that point but my mum was having chemo at the same time - it was obvious she was ill though. But so funny still.

babypowder · 30/12/2007 22:47

Adore R4 - wouldn't have survived my matty leave without it. I nearly crashed my car listening to ISIHAC today

WendyWeber · 30/12/2007 22:49

Here, Nightynight!

Listen live (link at top right) or listen again to masses of progs (except Desert Island Discs which won't )

Gursky · 30/12/2007 22:50

I love Radio 4. I'm out and proud about it too!

I love most of the comedy, women's hour, the today programme, but most of all, best of all, In Our Time!

And my DH has a crush on Fi Glover.

Vulgar · 30/12/2007 22:50

LOVE Radio 4.

honestly don't know what I'd do without it.

Really miss Nick Clarke and his lovely voice. His audio diary was amazing but so, so sad. His poor family

I listen to all the current affair things as well as the lighthearted stuff but as I don't watch the news on TV or read the papers, I never know what anyone looks like

Did anyone listen to the programme on Dance hosts on Cruise ships? It was brilliant!

MerryPIFFLEmas · 30/12/2007 22:53

I canot leave Terry Wogan but prefer Radio 4 for any other time nowadays.

Gameboy · 30/12/2007 22:54

FANTASTIC to see so many like-minded souls... I feared there would be none (sometimes feels as if MN is just for huns these days... )

I'm so out of touch though - what is ISIHAC ?

AAARGH! Have just realised, it's I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue - phew! Not so out of touch as I thought....

Another Radio Four fan signing in.
Love Front Row, (has to be presented by Mark Lawson),PM, Woman's Hour(actually have a bit of a love/hate relationship with it), The Archers, From Our Own Correspondent, In Our Time.... and the little one off gems that appear in the schedule.
However I find most of the comedy shows supremely annoying apart from the fantastic Ed Reardon.
Agree with others about Ned Sherrin but also disliked John Peel on Home Truths (although loved his Radio One show when I was a slip of a girl).
