Good morning @Iceniii @MargaretThursday @TheCountessofFitzdotterel @StellaOlivetti @Drybird2020 @Hippywannabe @britneyisfree @snowqu33n @dogsdogsgods @loveisagirlnameddaisy @vivariumvivariumsvivaria @BearWoman @Snow1n @toomuchfaster @samvimesboots @Ylfa @52andblue @Dellabob123 @AintNoPartyLikeANumber10Party @Superwomble @FledglingFountainPen @IShouldBeWriting

It's the 1st of February, and Day 1 of Mumsnet Novel Writing Month 2022.

Check in here daily for moral support and chat about your writing process.

The idea is to keep one another focussed on completing an activity during the month of February, whether that's a 50,000 word first draft (for the pantsers), pulling together a long-considered draft from notes, doing an edit, or just taking time every day to get thoughts down on the page.

As life got in the way for me, in December and January, I've decided to spend the next 2 weeks progressing the MS I fell 15k words short of completing during NaNoWriMo November last year. After that, I may move onto the new idea I had originally earmarked for Feb.

Everyone is welcome, just chime in. And don't worry if you miss a day, obviously, or life gets in the way. It's supposed to be supportive, not a millstone around the neck, or a source of unwelcome pressure.

Let's give ourselves both the carrot (pats on the back for one another), and the 'stick' (a daily word count).

On that note, I'm off to grapple with my too-long and unwieldy fifth chapter, and extend the story by 1,500 words.

Good luck, everybody! May we all experience creative clarity, and a sense of achievement, this month.

Thanks for the thread! I failed miserably during Jan. I did post about unreliable narrators and it made me realise I needed to rewrite my first few chapters from third person to first person but I've been putting it off (and life/work/kids gets in the way - although I know that's always a convenient excuse...)

Must try harder in Feb!

Snow1n · 01/02/2022 10:44

Ohh yay, thanks @cloudmessenger! I need to figure out whether I'm going to do lots of prep for the book in my head, or do some short stories and bits and pieces to get the juices flowing 🤔

cloudmessenger · 01/02/2022 10:51

@loveisagirlnameddaisy can you make a start on one chapter in the third person today? No time like the present.

@Snow1n I’d recommend starting to write a story today. Just a paragraph, an opening.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reminder @cloudmessenger. I've been putting off editing my first draft for a couple of months so this will be the push I need to get started.

Dellabob123 · 01/02/2022 10:53

Thank you @cloudmessenger. Date I say it, but I’m rather excited about starting this, and somewhat nervous.
I’m going to write with the comfort of knowing I’m writing- I know my word count will peak and trough but that will not be my measure- just that comfortSmile

Snow1n · 01/02/2022 11:07

Thanks @cloudmessenger I shall do that!

Icenii · 01/02/2022 11:13

I got a good flow in Jan and have hit the wall. I am going to map out the next few chapters so I know what I am going to write. I'm not editing as I go along so my current 31k words are not good quality at all. Keep telling myself it doesn't matter and I can enhance them in the second draft.

snowqu33n · 01/02/2022 11:47

Hi everyone!
Same here @Icenii I did well last month but super busy the past couple of weeks.
I will check in again after I have opened my document!

Best wishes to everyone… Let’s GO!!

StellaOlivetti · 01/02/2022 12:01

Thank you for this thread, @cloudmessenger. I’m nervous but excited to get back in the saddle. Good luck, everyone 😀

samvimesboots · 01/02/2022 12:03

Thanks @cloudmessenger.

I'm just frozen by the first choice first or third person POV... might just have to decide and go with it.

Look forward to seeing how you all do.

Icenii · 01/02/2022 12:43

I've gone with third but can't decide whether to add in another POV. I wanted it to be mainly the MC POV with only a few chapters for the antagonist POV. Really not sure.

@samvimesboots

Thanks *@cloudmessenger*.

This is my problem, I need to start again in first person to make the unreliable narrator strategy work. But I don't like writing in the first person! I need to read a couple of good examples of first person literature to get my mojo.
MargaretThursday · 01/02/2022 13:37

Thank you! Time to start!

Snow1n · 01/02/2022 13:49

Just over 1000 words done of a random story idea that popped in my head the other day, so a decent start, and actually I really quite like the idea so may run with it

cloudmessenger · 01/02/2022 13:59

Genuinely delighted to see all these comments reporting actual writing activity! Good on you all.

Whatever else you do today, just get something on the page.

I’ve trimmed chapter 5 by 1,000 words and set aside the family background material to drop in elsewhere in the story; now for a coffee, and the next stage.

We are cooking with gas Smile

I’m the opposite today. I tried to start in 1st person, thought I’d give it a go as never done before. It’s really hard. I don’t think the story suits it, so going to change to 3rd!

snowqu33n · 01/02/2022 14:13

440 new words today. Hopefully tomorrow will be more inspired but happy with progress.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 01/02/2022 14:37

Thank you for the nudge, @cloudmessenger.

I'm still pulling notes together but I could definitely start getting some chapters or the intro pulled into a first draft.

Bit nervous...what if it's SHITE?

Delighted to see such a big group, will be motivating to watch your progress.

samvimesboots · 01/02/2022 14:47

Just over 1000, a stab at a first chapter.

WriterBee · 01/02/2022 15:42

Hi all, can I join in? I'm about 30,000 words into my MS and have come to a grinding halt so need a big kick up the backside. Haven't added any words since before Christmas. Right, I will read the last chapter and try to get motivated enough to get going Smile

MargaretThursday · 01/02/2022 16:27

I've started... well 155 words in. I think I've deleted as many as I've written though. Grin

Opus17 · 01/02/2022 16:34

Hi everyone, can I join please? I have a 404 page mess that needs heavy editing 😅 I'm trying to do some here and there when DS naps but it's quite difficult some days.
I'm at home for the next 18 months with him so I'm determined to get this book edited and as close to finished as possible, and hopefully then send round some agents. See if I have a shot!

Good luck everyone!

StellaOlivetti · 01/02/2022 16:43

Hello everyone, I’m downing pen now. 698 words! This is AMAZING for me. Some unresolved minor issue with tense, which I’ll sort later. Off for a bath now, and cup of tea.

cloudmessenger · 01/02/2022 17:07

Welcome, new #MuNoWriMo22 sistren!

I now have two slightly less unwieldy chapters, and an extra 2k words of story.

Quite pleased with that. Will check in after the post-school & bedtime routines to respond to individual posts.

👏 for all, I really want to know what everyone is writing!

About 2,200 words this morning, my hand is still killing me now. It is a great start, I’m so pleased with myself - not in a smug way. Usually there is too much self doubt and it makes the process agonising, but something else is there instead, a confidence that just won’t let me not write it. Feels good!
