Good morning @Iceniii @MargaretThursday @TheCountessofFitzdotterel @StellaOlivetti @Drybird2020 @Hippywannabe @britneyisfree @snowqu33n @dogsdogsgods @loveisagirlnameddaisy @vivariumvivariumsvivaria @BearWoman @Snow1n @toomuchfaster @samvimesboots @Ylfa @52andblue @Dellabob123 @AintNoPartyLikeANumber10Party @Superwomble @FledglingFountainPen @IShouldBeWriting

It's the 1st of February, and Day 1 of Mumsnet Novel Writing Month 2022.

Check in here daily for moral support and chat about your writing process.

The idea is to keep one another focussed on completing an activity during the month of February, whether that's a 50,000 word first draft (for the pantsers), pulling together a long-considered draft from notes, doing an edit, or just taking time every day to get thoughts down on the page.

As life got in the way for me, in December and January, I've decided to spend the next 2 weeks progressing the MS I fell 15k words short of completing during NaNoWriMo November last year. After that, I may move onto the new idea I had originally earmarked for Feb.

Everyone is welcome, just chime in. And don't worry if you miss a day, obviously, or life gets in the way. It's supposed to be supportive, not a millstone around the neck, or a source of unwelcome pressure.

Let's give ourselves both the carrot (pats on the back for one another), and the 'stick' (a daily word count).

On that note, I'm off to grapple with my too-long and unwieldy fifth chapter, and extend the story by 1,500 words.

Good luck, everybody! May we all experience creative clarity, and a sense of achievement, this month.

Just over 500. They are not the best but at least I did some. Aiming for a rough draft so I'm happy with any writing.

Icenii · 04/02/2022 20:11

1600 words this evening.

@stellaOlivetti I'm convinced my writing is too. I known it is but I'm hoping on the second edit I'll turn what I have into something much better. I plan to spend a lot of time on the second pass ensuring I have good settings, character arcs and personality etc. I'm going to study books in my genre and understand what they do.

I think I may struggle turning my adult apocalyptic fantasy into a story an adult would want to read. But then again, I love YA as a 40 something. Still not sure whether to go YA instead, but my MC is around 40 so not sure it would work.

IShouldBeWriting · 04/02/2022 22:50

Well today I edited most of chapter one. Only got to do the final scene which sets the arc for the whole book. Ie, possibly the most important 300 words.
Been writing dialogue on my phone which was interesting but weirdly off-character.

Opus17 · 05/02/2022 06:44

Well done on the progress everyone! And thanks for sharing what you're all writing about. It was interesting to read through.

I'm writing historical fiction and also prefer working early morning. I haven't had a great amount of success the last few days as my little one is teething / regressing so naps have been interrupted and he's been needing resettling a lot. I've only managed to rewrite about half my chapter 1 over the last two days.
I'm awake early, have had my coffee and read a chapter and now I'm going to tackle more of chapter 1 while DH and DS are still sleeping!
Good luck and have a lovely weekend everyone.

snowqu33n · 05/02/2022 14:23

Couldn’t manage any yesterday as lots of work on Fridays. Today I managed almost 700 words, before succumbing to the call of the wine.
BTW I am not based in the UK so the time here is several hours ahead!

Hope everyone has a productive weekend!

Dellabob123 · 05/02/2022 14:59

Hi everyone, nothing for me at the e weekends, kids and life are too demanding. But, I’m starting to live with my characters and the plot lines as I go about my day, so that feels like something.

@Ylfa that start time is impressive, and something I would like to work towards. Can I ask if you set an alarm, are naturally that way inclined, can do it without waking anyone else? I think my kids would just instinctively know I was up and come and hassle me!

Happy writing everyone

Snow1n · 06/02/2022 12:06

Ive been poorly the last few days but Im hoping to get back to it tomorrow 🤞 well done everyone for keeping on, even when it feels slow!

MargaretThursday · 06/02/2022 15:17

Keep going everyone! Hope you're going better than me, which is slightly stuck. Grin

samvimesboots · 06/02/2022 17:58

I think I made a rookie mistake and didn't think to write at the weekend! Oh well, tomorrow is a new day.

StellaOlivetti · 06/02/2022 20:05

Finished chapter one! V pleased.

cloudmessenger · 06/02/2022 20:21

Technically today is DAY 6 of MuNoWriMo, but special dispensation for all whose family lives leave little time for writing.

My kids are now asleep, so I'm going to carry on trimming the fat from my first 10 chapters. Can't quite imagine advancing the story right now.

Hope you all had decent weekends. See you tomorrow for day 7.

Hi @Dellabob123 I don’t set an alarm, I live alone now and I just love early mornings. I think nature intended me to be a night owl originally but I overrode it somehow. Probably to get time to myself when the children were little!

Very few words over the weekend, it was all social engagements instead.

Ylfa · 07/02/2022 06:40

I’m deeply in awe of all the munowrimies doing this around work/domestic obligations. My time is all my own so theoretically could do this full time, at least for this month.

cloudmessenger · 07/02/2022 08:40

Morning, MuNoWriMies (thanks @Ylfa)

So, it’s DAY 7 of our project to start/finish/advance/edit a manuscript, in a focussed way, over the course of the month.

My aim today is to write 2k words and carry on editing a chunk.

How about you? What would you like to achieve today?

AintNoPartyLikeANumber10Party · 07/02/2022 09:32

Good morning all! I wasn’t planning on writing today but need to catch up after missing a writing day last week.

I have been wrestling with the backstory of one of my characters (in my head) and today I’m going to introduce him and see if it works. Not sure how many words I’ll end up keeping for the book, but I need to make him real so I can find his voice.

Does anyone else get that itchy feeling when they
A) need to write, or
B) need to edit?

cloudmessenger · 07/02/2022 10:30

@AintNoPartyLikeANumber10Party oh yes, I get grumpy when I can’t write. Editing, however, I find properly challenging, and feel trepidation.

Hope you find your character’s voice today. As you say, characterisation is not wasted even if you don’t leave it in.

Ylfa · 07/02/2022 10:35

Today I hoped to type up the handwritten manuscript so far, to get a word count and tidy it a little and read through aloud but instead I’ve written almost 2000 words. All of those words are just repeating a part I’d already written but forgot about. 🙄

cloudmessenger · 07/02/2022 10:38

Oops! It happens. Keep going @Ylfa x

Ylfa · 07/02/2022 10:38

I keep finding new ways ‘in’ to the story - they’re all equally good, this might have to become a choose your own ending book. Always wanted to write one of those but feared the admin.

Ylfa · 07/02/2022 10:38

Thank you! 🤭😅

snowqu33n · 07/02/2022 13:07

Hello MunoWrimos

Still moving forward and yesterday an entirely new character decided to introduce himself, so I allowed that to happen and he’s now promised to reappear later in the plot with a useful bit of information for the protagonist, which is helpful of him.

Now past the 19,000 word milestone and the goal is to reach 20,000 when I have more time tomorrow.

cloudmessenger · 07/02/2022 15:27

Nicely done @snowqu33n 20k will be a satisfying milestone. Applauding you here!

Hi all 🙂

I'm well into the 40,000s now and will hopefully finish tonight. A day later than I wanted but I'd have been waiting on beta readers and my editor who's tied up til the weekend anyway.

Now to decide if tomorrow is another post-apoc romance or a paranormal one. Decisions 🙈

Icenii · 07/02/2022 19:14

Well done! I'm 37k in and am stalling. Feel the middle of the book is a bit flat and lacking and am having doubts.

Dellabob123 · 07/02/2022 19:54

You’ve all done so well. I am amazed by your word counts and ability to sit and just write like the wind - I feel rather inferior. I’m only just starting out on my writing journey and have a lot to learn.

Im going to carry on and see where this month gets me, and if I get to 20k I will be thrilled. (I will properly aim for more, but daily word count wants to suggest otherwise).

Have super evenings everyone and happy word smithing.
