Good morning @Iceniii @MargaretThursday @TheCountessofFitzdotterel @StellaOlivetti @Drybird2020 @Hippywannabe @britneyisfree @snowqu33n @dogsdogsgods @loveisagirlnameddaisy @vivariumvivariumsvivaria @BearWoman @Snow1n @toomuchfaster @samvimesboots @Ylfa @52andblue @Dellabob123 @AintNoPartyLikeANumber10Party @Superwomble @FledglingFountainPen @IShouldBeWriting

It's the 1st of February, and Day 1 of Mumsnet Novel Writing Month 2022.

Check in here daily for moral support and chat about your writing process.

The idea is to keep one another focussed on completing an activity during the month of February, whether that's a 50,000 word first draft (for the pantsers), pulling together a long-considered draft from notes, doing an edit, or just taking time every day to get thoughts down on the page.

As life got in the way for me, in December and January, I've decided to spend the next 2 weeks progressing the MS I fell 15k words short of completing during NaNoWriMo November last year. After that, I may move onto the new idea I had originally earmarked for Feb.

Everyone is welcome, just chime in. And don't worry if you miss a day, obviously, or life gets in the way. It's supposed to be supportive, not a millstone around the neck, or a source of unwelcome pressure.

Let's give ourselves both the carrot (pats on the back for one another), and the 'stick' (a daily word count).

On that note, I'm off to grapple with my too-long and unwieldy fifth chapter, and extend the story by 1,500 words.

Good luck, everybody! May we all experience creative clarity, and a sense of achievement, this month.

Well I am on s bus and have written nothing yet today. I have half an hour now and my phone, and hoping to write some of my missing chapter.
Good luck to you all. I'm in awe of anyone who can finish a novel, but this is focussing my mind, so thanks.

Hello everyone

I’m checking in because today is the first day in almost a week I haven’t felt absolutely awful …. I’ve had the mother of all colds and honestly could barely function. Today feeling more human and managed to hit my word count. I’m attempting a dual narrative which only works in my view if you can adequately distinguish the two voices, otherwise it’s pointless; it was tricky with this second chapter at first but I think I’m getting there. So interesting to learn what others are writing! Am in awe of some of your word counts.

themental · 10/02/2022 20:50

Checking in 🙂

Finished the book and it's with my beta reader who's halfway through it. Editor needs it by the 13th so hopefully she finishes tonight in case anything desperately needs changed 🤞🏻

I started a new one last night and managed 2700. Just sitting down now to write after using today to catch up on all the life things which inevitably get neglected when a book is near the finish line 🤣.

I have zero plot for this one (it wasn't planned at all) and only the barest of ideas so we'll see how it goes. I do want to finish by the end of the month so I can write and release the Book 3 next month, but totally forgot the kids are off next week so that'll be interesting. 🙈

Total words for Feb:
26,262 - 55,133 = 28,871
0 - 2,754 = 2,754

= 31,625 😁

Wow so much words everywhere, I’ve stalled but these updates are encouraging. Massive well done to all of us wherever we are at. Is everyone pleased with what they’ve done so far?

500 words yesterday but they are strokes of genius to strengthen the weak basic premise of the whole thing. I don’t think much writing will happen today but I’ve set up a Twitter handle for the pen name as a positive act towards something! Still have 2000 a day as my goal but it was inevitable that some days would fall short, I was born without a work ethic 😟

Ylfa · 11/02/2022 10:13

Is it even called a handle ?

MargaretThursday · 11/02/2022 23:40

I've managed 1k tonight, which is better than the last few days.

IShouldBeWriting · 12/02/2022 08:17

Last night I got a spurt on and I now have the first three chapters at first readable draft stage. That's about 8000 words but I knew this was going to be slow - I've another 70000 down but not readable. Hoping I can speed up the editing now the basic premise is more secure.

cloudmessenger · 12/02/2022 09:08

Good morning MuNoWrimies

It’s DAY 12 of our project. Sorry to abandon the thread yesterday. I managed to send my competition entry off, but have not extended the story since I last checked in. I plan to remedy that right now, as I have 1 hour ohne kinder.

Well done to everyone above who has added to their MS @snowqu33n
@themental @IShouldBeWriting @MargaretThursday

Let’s keep on track. There are still 2 weeks+ to reach out targets.

OP posts:
Icenii · 12/02/2022 15:11

I don't think I'll reach my target because I'm struggling with the juggling of a few things. I'm meant to be taking exams for work too. I've not done much this week but did just manage 2777 today bringing my total word count to over 40k. Only about 5k this week. My aim is 70k for the first draft.

Icenii · 12/02/2022 15:19

All backed up to laptop and the cloud!

cloudmessenger · 12/02/2022 21:49

Amazing @Icenii hats off to you managing that. Keep going.

I have 44k now. Need a spurt after this slow crawl.

OP posts:
snowqu33n · 13/02/2022 04:29

Now over 30,000 but feeling a bit burnt out today!
I know where the plot is going but I don’t want to rush this part too much. I think there might be a few ‘white room’ parts earlier on that will need fixing if I’m ever to put it out to readers without them scratching their heads about where they’re finding themselves.

Ylfa · 13/02/2022 07:29

These are such inspirational updates! I’m excited by those word counts, combined total just from the last three posts is over 100k, mine hasn’t grown since ? Thursday ish. This thread makes me want to get back on it.

Passing the halfway mark is such a milestone @Icenii how does it feel? Congratulations to @cloudmessenger and @snowqu33n too.

52andblue · 13/02/2022 17:10

Can I ask for advice here? (not sure if appropriate on this thread?)

I have 58K words of material that I wrote in NaNoWriMo.
It's my first attempt and it's largely autobiographical.
I know that until this material is written up as a book I won't be able to work on anything else. BUT - I cant make it completely autobiographical as I have teenagers & much of it is unsuitable.
Plus, 2 of the other main characters are still alive so I have to turn it into a Novel. Both are now gravely ill, so my feelings have changed too & I feel less happy about the plot twists I had planned for them!

I don't know where to start with the (re) structure
Does anyone have any advice please?

StellaOlivetti · 13/02/2022 17:58

Just finished chapter two! I’m pleased it’s safely down on paper - it was trickier than chapter one. My aim this month is finish chapter 4 by the end of February. The long term aim is a coherent first draft by the end of April but I thin that might be a bit ambitious!

MargaretThursday · 13/02/2022 21:07

Still going! I'm doing a lot of fiddling about rather than writing, but I think progress still is being made!

Drybird2020 · 14/02/2022 00:14

I'm back from Covidland and making some progress with editing and reorganising the chronology of the YA novel I started in November. There's still lots of actual writing to do which will feel easier once a few things are clearer in my head.

@52andblue would it work to move away from the laptop and represent it visually? Massive sheet of paper, mindmap or flow chart, post it notes to move around that kind of thing? I find I need to physically move things around sometimes.

IShouldBeWriting · 14/02/2022 08:33

Well yesterday I spent about 4 hours writing 400 new words. I realise I go over each sentence five or six times, and delete whole paragraphs - the digital equivalent of screwing up the page and chucking it into the bin. Have set myself a deadline now - complete by the end of this week as half-term is always a riot.

@52andblue don't leave out something because of your teenagers, they'll be adults soon, and the most interesting events to read about are those we aren't tak about. Try writing from an onlooker's point of view. Give your reader ideas for if the same thing happened to them. But tell it!

@Drybird2020 sounds like we are in same sort of place. Here's to clear thinking!

themental · 14/02/2022 10:32

Had a productive weekend 😁

Thursday - 3,335
Friday - 3,486
Saturday - 4,642
Sunday - 3,934

This was over two different projects, and I think I'm adding a third one into the mix today 🙈 still need to add a chapter of the next book before I can publish the book I finished last week, so I'll do that today while I wait for edits. Words might slow down while I get that book ready for publication and book promo etc. Relative I was with over the weekend has just tested positive for covid so need to wait and see if we've escaped that or not.

Good luck this week everyone!!

Drybird2020 · 14/02/2022 11:09

Those are some pretty impressive numbers, @themental!

Icenii · 14/02/2022 21:07

Around 1300 today but I decided to track my story elements by starting a wiki as I have to keep scrolling back and looking for details. Helpful but may prove a distraction. Have medical herbs, horse names and descriptions, characters etc.

cloudmessenger · 14/02/2022 22:16

DAY 14 of #MuNoWriMo

Day 1 of half term

Word count today: 0

I hope to catch up with the posts tomorrow morning before DCs awaken.

Hello all,
Hope you’re keeping on keeping on.
It’s been a good month for me time wise so I am lucky that way. Now on 41,241. It’s pretty rushed in places and needs more details but the plot is down. Starting again at the beginning to expand and rework some scenes and dialogue.
I’ve already hit my word count goal for the month but the next stage is harder for me. I enjoy storytelling but getting the style and details to work for a reader who can’t see what I see in my head is more of a challenge.

IShouldBeWriting · 16/02/2022 08:20

Working on the move yesterday. First five chapters are done now - about 14000 words. Ch six is tricky. Wrote 1000 words and want to delete them all. Meh. Got today, tomorrow and Friday to finish....
