Mumsnet MuNoWriMo in February 2022?

So, it's the final day of #NaNoWriMo21

Drafts that have not reached the 50,000-word target (mine is 10k short) will self-destruct on the stroke of midnight, so best get scribbling Wink

I hope that you all found it rewarding, whether to finish your first story, take a break from other projects, or re-write an existing one. So many committed writers on this board!

I've found it worked wonders for my 'productivity' (ugh, that word) and focus at a busy time of year, at least until the 'flu jab made me poorly, and I switched back to an existing MS that someone asked to see.

I will definitely be doing it again next year, but now I'm wondering about an informal Mumsnet #MuNoWriMo in February 2022? I have another project I'd like to build up a head of steam on, and this would carve out space for it.

Anyone interested?

I'd be tempted. I'm about 12k words in to my first book and may need time to focus. If it just words on a page and editing later?

I'd love to know what other writers find most difficult to nail when writing.

cloudmessenger · 30/11/2021 13:19

Absolutely. The aim would be to just get the words down, but it could also be a motivator to complete a round of edits if that's the stage someone is at. The main thing is just to goad one-another to stay focussed over a four-week stretch.

Shall we pencil it into the diary @Iceniii ?

What I find most difficult is not constantly changing back and forth between ideas I've started working on. I will get into my flow, then suddenly the gilded carriage rolls up and the other idea suddenly looks to tempting to ignore!

What's your greatest challenge?

OP posts:
Iceniii · 30/11/2021 14:23

Yes, let's pencil it in.

I have lots of rich ideas in my head but it's the actual craft of writing I struggle with. POV, exposition, grammar, getting it down into a format that works etc. I assume that will come with practise.

cloudmessenger · 30/11/2021 14:59

Excellent! Now we are two.

The only solution to all the wonderful ideas you want to get out of your head and onto the page is Bum In Chair, isn't it? Keep writing.

Any more takers? I know I'm jumping the gun a bit, what with today being the last day of Novel November, but I didn't want to forget to plan another sprint.

May do. Depends on work, and how I'm feeling at the time.

cloudmessenger · 30/11/2021 17:22

Aces @MargaretThursday Let’s see how things go.

Anyone else in? We can egg each other on, and not find excuses not to concentrate.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/11/2021 21:37

It’s a lovely idea.
Maybe depending on where I am with things then.

cloudmessenger · 01/12/2021 13:33

Yay @TheCountessofFitzdotterel !

I’d say #MuNoWriMo is go Smile

May I join please? I need desperately to do something with the hot mess that is the first draft of my second novel. And between Christmas and working I have no time to focus on it, but in February I will be much freer 🙂

Drybird2020 · 14/12/2021 23:26

Great idea. I managed 30,000 words of a new novel in November, which I was actually pretty pleased with. February is such a crappy month, itnwill be good to have a positive focus.

cloudmessenger · 15/12/2021 07:32

Absolutely @StellaOlivetti & @Drybird2020

#MuNoWriMo awaits just on the other side of the Christmas slump Xmas Smile

Hippywannabe · 15/12/2021 07:37

Oh, I am in! I managed 12000 words ish for Nanowrimo which was my first and have done nothing since. I even prebought the tshirt!
I would love to commit to something to get me focused again!

cloudmessenger · 15/12/2021 12:53

Welcome @Hippywannabe !

I'm late to the party but can I join....

cloudmessenger · 29/12/2021 17:53

Of course @britneyisfree ! The more the merrier

snowqu33n · 30/12/2021 04:21

Can I join, too, please? Suddenly inspired to try writing again and 8,000 words in at the moment.

cloudmessenger · 30/12/2021 14:00

Please do, @snowqu33n

No need to wait for 1st Feb, but that starting line will be there if it helps focus the mind.

Can I join too please? I've never done anything like this before so not sure of the rules Smile

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 02/01/2022 11:51

Have just found this thread. Can I join too? Aspiring writer of 20+ years here, keep making excuses to not do it. Am determined to do it this year!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 03/01/2022 01:23

Me too, please.

Got a non-fiction book which is a huge pile of notes and scribbles and I need to get some discipline and routine to turn it into something useful.

I really want my book.

cloudmessenger · 03/01/2022 12:59

Be our guests @dogsdogsgods @loveisagirlnameddaisy !

Rules-wise, the aim is a 50k-word manuscript, covering some ground every day, and posting on the thread for moral support. We can hold each other to our goals.

Hold that thought @vivariumvivariumsvivaria - February will be the month you pull together your much-wanted MS!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/01/2022 14:10

Anyone use scrivener? I read about it on a how-to-write-a-book blog.

It's taking a bit of getting used to, but if you are like me and have a book in a pile of folders and boxes of scribbles then it seems like a useful way to organise things. I have so many files and drafts on my mac but I can't find them or figure out how to jigsaw them together.

Am using the free trial, so far, I think it might be helpful.

BearWoman · 04/01/2022 14:13

I am keen to join.

cloudmessenger · 05/01/2022 08:30

Welcome @BearWoman Smile

I’ve not tried Scrivener @vivariumvivariumsvivaria - the note function in Pages works well enough for me - but I’ve heard others speak highly of it. Worth a try to start organising your notes? A bit like arranging them on several cork boards?

OP posts:
StellaOlivetti · 05/01/2022 15:28

I know of several writers who do use scrivener, @vivariumvivariumsvivaria, but not me. I am pretty hopeless with technology and write longhand, in biro, in exercise books. First drafts, anyway. Perhaps it depends on how much planning you do? I only have a vague sense of direction of travel when I start to write x
