I have a novel outline (romantic) and am just filling out bits and bobs...character development etc. I should be extremely well prepped for November so considering giving it a go. Anyone else ? Hoping for a realistic 900 words plus a day.

You're all doing so well! I managed about 1,400 words today. Would have liked to get nearer 2,000 though.

The real challenge comes tomorrow with full time work to deal with as well as children.

What genre are you writing?

Ylfa · 01/11/2020 22:52

It’s sort of domestic noir, really formulaic and all the tropes - so much fun to write! But I’ve mistakenly set it in a dystopian near future which probably should be a whole different book. We’ll see.

52andblue · 01/11/2020 22:55

Can I join too ?
I couldn't start today, but I'm aiming to catch up tomorrow.
I've only done NaNo once before, when I started on the 28th and hit 50k words by end Nov 🙃
I thought I knew what I was going to write, but I met SUCH an interesting character today that I may have to re-think ?

52andblue · 01/11/2020 22:56

I started on the 18th, and hit 50k by end Nov. Starting on 28th would really be pushing it !

elfycat · 02/11/2020 00:30

52andblue I had a story vaguely plotted and then on the 31st I got inspiration for a character and had to quickly come up with a setting for her. She didn't have a name until I started typing at midnight. Go with whatever you feel most enthusiastic about. It's the only way.

I scraped my day one target at 2355hrs and now I must sleep. Thanks DD1 (11yo) for lying about having done her homework last week and then needing my assistance tonight... I can see a screen ban coming tomorrow until she's done every scrap of homework, her piano practice and tidied her room actually my psychic skills tell me there will be a great huffing of breath, stomping and sulking, with added whinging for longer than those tasks would take

Cherrypi · 02/11/2020 07:33

I'm writing literary fiction and only have a few themed no plot yet. Shouldn't have trouble writing with kids as I only work part time. Well until the bubbles collapse.

Ylfa · 02/11/2020 07:56

Anyone else write in almost geological time? Started at 5 and only 600 words. I mean it’s fine it’s just there’s a lot of pacing around and chain smoking. How do you get it to flow?!

Witchend · 02/11/2020 18:11

I find dialogue is useful for getting going when I'm not sure what's happening. As I write it I think it's obvious that I'm killing time and just bulking out words, but once the story is finished sometimes they've ended up being important parts.

Ylfa · 02/11/2020 18:35

That’s such a good tip, thanks, dialogue always feels easier to write!

Cherrypi · 02/11/2020 18:38

Ooh I hate dialogue. I just switch off my internal editor and leave in errors. Who cares if I have some inconsistencies and I've forgotten what day I said it was earlier. I can correct this later.

Yifa I was writing very slowly then managed to get faster by doing sprints with other people on the NaNo Discord. Something about being timed made me just blah out words much more quickly.

Oooooh, what is that? I’m missing out!
LimeLemonOrange · 02/11/2020 23:08

If you find and join your local region on the Nano website you can find out their Discord that way.

Ylfa · 03/11/2020 05:15

Thanks! I’ll check it out

Witchend · 03/11/2020 16:09

How's everyone doing? I'm hoping to hit 10k today as I'm furloughed on Tuesdays (!) Silver linings and all that.
I kind of know what happens in the next scene, and I'm not sure how to get to it from where they are now.

Cherrypi · 03/11/2020 16:29

Ooh well done. I'm just past 5k.

Ylfa · 03/11/2020 18:35

3925 🤔

having a day off tho 😀

LimeLemonOrange · 03/11/2020 20:16

I'm currently on 4436 but hoping to add more before midnight. I'm finding it slow going today. I'm aiming for the standard 1667 each day and the last two days found it easy but that was an easier chapter than this one.

Well done everyone for getting those words down! I've no idea if I can sustain 1667 each day, I start a new job on Thursday and I think it might be a challenge to have enough brain remaining in the evenings for writing.

Lemming20 · 03/11/2020 20:54

I’m on 4000 but stuck now. Husband is back at work and I have a small baby so it’s going to be a struggle! I’ve got a basic plot in my head but mainly just plotting as I go.

Keep going everyone! Smile

Lemming20 · 03/11/2020 20:59

Gosh this is difficult.

I’m doing a crime thriller, had a basic idea of where it’s going for about 6 months but haven’t done a plan. I am just going for it and seeing where I end up. I have an A and a B but no idea how to get from A to B Grin

I have managed to do 4000 words but will struggle from this point onwards as I have a small baby and husband is back to work. @LimeLemonOrange I am impressed you are doing this in light of a new job starting. Get a coffee in you when you finish each day and go for it Smile

LimeLemonOrange · 03/11/2020 21:40

@Lemming20 I'm MORE impressed that you're attempting this with a small baby!

My kids are 13 and 17 now and so obviously that's a lot easier.

I definitely think small baby wins over new job on the brain scramble and exhaustion front! I hope you can carve out some small pieces of time for yourself to add a few words here and there.

I'm a bit like you with the 'have A and B but no idea how to get from A to B'

Good luck.

Witchend · 03/11/2020 22:02

One tip someone gave me a few years ago is if you decide to rewrite a bit, then leave the original bit in, so you get both for the word count.

Lemming20 · 04/11/2020 03:59

Wow sorry about multiple post fail...

Can I ask why everyone seems obsessed with word count? Why leave it in if you are going to take it out? TIA Smile

Witchend · 04/11/2020 07:31

Because to "win" Nano, you need to have written 50k words in November.
If you rewrite a section, then that still counts as you have written it both times.
