Are England and W a les the only places in Europe where schools are still open?

Taytocrisps · 17/07/2026 18:28

Sad news about Brenda Fricker.

deeahgwitch · 17/07/2026 18:35

May she rest in peace.
A wonderful actress.
I do hope she realised how loved and respected she was.
I know life had its tough moments for her.

JaneJeffer · 17/07/2026 19:12

Rest in peace Brenda. I rewatched My Left Foot earlier this year and she was so good.

deeahgwitch · 18/07/2026 15:11

Why if there’s a hosepipe ban in Dublin. ( and even if there isn’t we should conserve water at the moment because it hasn’t rained for ages ) has Circle K kept their car washes open ?
I passed 2 yesterday and 1 today and cars were queued up for the car wash.
I didn’t notice Applegreen, Texaco or Maxol.

eggandonion · 18/07/2026 19:10

I wonder if carwashes are like dishwashers and use less water than you'd think? I have no idea though.
Brenda Fricker seemed sad in recent years. There seems to be a run of deaths just now😕

Really feel for the people living in the Slievenamon area. I hope those fires can be brought under control before a tragedy occurs. Thinking of the livestock and local wildlife having to breathe in the smoke.

Yes. It must be awful for people affected including those fighting the fires.
When I see or hear the word Slievenamon I think of the lovely song of the same name and get an earworm of it.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 24/07/2026 11:16

It's shocking. We're not used to having to deal with these sorts of fires in Ireland. We could smell the smoke from Slievenamon yesterday in Cork due to the direction of the wind.

honeyrider · 24/07/2026 16:20

I've been reading the smoke can be smelt in Waterford City, I'm away on a cruise around the Baltic so cannot confirm.

JaneJeffer · 24/07/2026 18:19

Thank goodness the Gardaí intercepted that bomb. How could a woman in her twenties possibly think that what she planned to do was in any way justifiable?

(P.S. I forgot I was watching the BBC news and was wondering why RTÉ were calling the Garda Commissioner the head of the Irish police Grin)

deeahgwitch · 24/07/2026 21:06

That’s all we need in the world now for the North to kick off. 😮🙄
Aren’t things bad enough. 🥲

eggandonion · 24/07/2026 21:16

How could someone who is a trainee barrister think carrying a bomb was a good idea? Let alone planting it.
Iwish so much it would rain.. The fires are so awful everywhere.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 25/07/2026 08:56

Thank goodness they were caught.
I'd say that's the end of her career in law, then. Good riddance!

eggandonion · 25/07/2026 10:32

The news is horrible with fires and rapist husband and abusive teachers...and the speeding father whose little girl was killed.
We had about 2 minutes of rain earlier. It would be good to have massive rain to dampen the land.

DeanElderberry · 25/07/2026 10:51

a little drizzle on and off for a few days so that when it does fall it can soak in, not just run away, would be best.

I had a short stroll yesterday along a lane, the first part dry and dusty and falling apart, the second bit, lower down, with a spring-fed trickle in the ditch beside it green and lush. Amazing contrast. Similar around a holy well halfway along it - even the trees and bushes some metres away from the well were benefiting from its presence. Microrrhizal communities for the win.

eggandonion · 27/07/2026 09:59

Well done Mayo...we won't have to listen to GAA news for a while!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 27/07/2026 10:28

Delighted for Mayo!
Mayo for Sam at long last! 🏆

JaneJeffer · 27/07/2026 22:07

Is anyone watching In the Opinion of the Censor on RTE1? It’s making me cross!

I wonder was it the other way round, if you see what I mean - she might be someone who believes carrying a bomb is a good idea, and is training to be a barrister to further her beliefs..
Getting inside the system to use the system against itself - something like that?

Thank heavens they were caught before anyone was hurt.

deeahgwitch · 28/07/2026 10:05

Delighted for Mayo. 🏆
And I’d normally be a Kerry fan.
Great to see the celebrations as life is difficult for many at the moment.

eggandonion · 28/07/2026 10:09

I'd be scared to transport a bomb in case it exploded when it was in my boot. Im glad she doesn't seem to have bail and don't understand why there was a plan for bail.
I need to watch the censor thing. It looks interesting. I saw Life of Brian in Birmingham when it was banned in Belfast. And my auntie gave me The Country Girls to read...her illegal copy in Dublin. International cultural sanctions breaker!

JaneJeffer · 30/08/2026 21:35

I thought I saw a thread for The Traitors the last day but I can’t find it now. Anyone know if it exists and where it is?

I've just started a thread and cannot see a thread about the new series on RTE.

eggandonion · 10/09/2026 11:18

I didn't recognise Mary Lou...has she had work done and a new hairdresser? Has she lost a lot of weight?
She still seems cross...although Malahide is a nice place for a think in.
