There were four people living in four rooms in my present house. The female head of the household, who was already there in 1911, her trainee, and her half-orphan (mother dead) niece and nephew.

One of her jobs was keeping other rooms in the house clean and ready for people who met there regularly, the other one was dressmaking. She also kept a vegetable garden and raised poultry. A remarkable woman, tough, a carer who refused to let her niece be put in an institution (and kept her nephew until he was finished with primary school (so possibly 14).

As I said elsethread, one of my great grandmothers birthed 16 children. They worked, those women.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 18/04/2026 12:08

Thank you @DeanElderberry, they really did. I'm in admiration of them.

In the case of my great-grandmother, she lived a few doors away from her mother and sisters, three unmarried women who lived at home. I'm assuming they helped support her. One of those ladies was a midwife (or at least acted as a midwife!) and delivered her twin nieces, a home birth. You had to be strong and able in those days!

I have just discovered Dermot Bannons celebrity house thing. I have tea and toast and Dermot and Vogue.

Just tuned in but I don’t recognise the “celebrities” 😂 I could not live in an old church or school <shudder>

eggandonion · 29/04/2026 23:48

You don't know Vogue and Spenny? They are practically royalty...and I assume have a good cleaning lady as their house is immaculate .
The one with the gold stairs ...I saw her on Nationwide a few months ago. The rugby man seemed nice but his living room was too shiny.
I went to bed then. Up my small stairs that need painted. Into my messy room.

JaneJeffer · 30/04/2026 00:06

I must have missed them. Don’t they live in England though? Only saw a couple of people I never heard of before.

Vogue had recently built a house in Dublin. I haven't seen this programme yet.

eggandonion · 30/04/2026 09:13

I suspect Vogue might still have a London house plus the fabulous Howth one? I think she was selling one in London.
Dermot didn't ask to see the utility room which was a pity.

Probably knew she would fill it with Fairy for the bonus 💰

Another fatal car crash in Donegal.
May those who died rest in peace.
Heartbreaking for those who love them.
Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
What is it with Donegal - it seems to me that it has so many of these awful accidents.
Is it the roads ?
The driving ?
I do know I was shocked when driving on winding roads down the country that the speed limit was 100 kph yet a dual carriageway near my inlaws in Dublin was 60 kph.
The speed locally registered cars do on country roads absolutely shocks and scares me.

honeyrider · 16/05/2026 23:51

Awful news, their poor families getting that news.

I lived in Donegal for a while and it's had a reputation for decades for turning a blind eye to following the rules of the road. Not everyone but a high enough proportion of the population to have one of the highest crash rates in the country. I'm not saying that's what's happened in this horrific car crash as we don't know what caused it.

tinaabbot · 17/05/2026 11:58

Another crash in Dublin also, 4 killed over the weekend. It’s scary how quickly multiple lives and families are lost and changed for ever. May they rest in peace and their families find strength.

Its particularly scary when DC are learning to drive

Irish Rail has written off €50 Million that’s €50,000,000 on a failed IT system !
Who is responsible for it ?
Will heads roll ?
Will they f*ck.
I am sick of this in this country.
No accountability.
How will Simon, Mícheál and Daragh talk their way out of this ? 🥲

Isn’t The News just dreadful at the moment.
What a world we live in. 🥲

eggandonion · 11/06/2026 08:51

I totally agree. There doesn't seem to be any good news in any part of Morning Ireland. Even the weather has been gloomy.

That's true, and I'm not denying all the awful stuff happening in the world - but don't forget that good news doesn't make it into the headlines.
Bad news sells.

And there's so much more news these days!
I remember when I was a kid there was the 1 o'clock news, the 6 o'clock news, and the 9 o'clock news.

All hell could be breaking out in the Middle East, an earthquake could have swallowed entire townsfull of unfortunate people, somebody might have run amok with a gun in the US, the Pope might have got married - if it happened between news bulletins, we didn't know about it, we just got on with our little domestic/local lives and the big wide world got on with its, until the next news.

Now it's 24h rolling news channels gathering stories from all over the world, many of which are undoubtedly tragic, but which we would never have heard about in the past.

I'm not saying that 'ignorance is bliss' or that we should not be concerned about the fate of our fellow-humans, we used to read the newspapers to keep up with world affairs, but we didn't have every tragic global event constantly 24/7 - and very graphically - under our noses, feeding into 'doomscrolling'.

Small stories telling good news rarely reach the news bulletins, [they sometimes make it onto 'Nationwide', thoughWink] that doesn't mean that everything in the world is bad, there are lots of OK people in the world, doing good things, as well as all the awful stuff.

I know you could say that's very Pollyanna-ish😏 - but it's also true, isn't it, that if you look around, beyond the media, you can see good as well as badSmile

So much of the news is repetitive, like how many times do they have to keep talking about the same news item with different people. The 6pm news is desperate for that.

eggandonion · 11/06/2026 14:14

I think Oliver Callan should be on after the news instead of David McCullough. Bbc radio 4 is good for assorted programmes during the morning.
At least various royal scandals provide variety!

JaneJeffer · 11/06/2026 14:37

But remember when there would be a News Flash @MarieDeGournay? Exciting stuff Grin

The TG4 news is much more uplifting than the RTÉ depression fest. Indeed most of their programmes are better.

deeahgwitch · 11/06/2026 17:38

TG4 are out on their own for high quality programmes.
I also love Ros na Rűn.
