HH is the best of a poor lot. I hope Maria Steen manages to get a nomination so that we might hear something other than the usual platitudes in the debates.

eggandonion · 20/09/2025 15:41

I would also like to see her in the debates. I think she might make the contest more interesting. I don't think I would vote for her though!

eggandonion · 19/09/2025 16:08

Joe Brolly might cause some excitement...
President Brolly sounds a bit silly though.

He could use the Irish. O Brollaigh? It's the same as Bradley iirc

Yeah, I'd like to see her in the elections too. The other candidates are so vanilla and I'd be interested to hear what she has to say. I'd consider voting for her, definitely wouldn't rule her out if she manages to get a nomination.

Isn't Joe Brolly married to Joe Biden's cousin? Or something like that šŸ¤”

TaTuirseOrm · 20/09/2025 17:41

It feels like a piss poor selection of candidates no one to get excited about. Don't know yet who I'll vote for.

Phase42 · 20/09/2025 19:12

Mary Lou was talking rubbish so when she said there would be an upcoming announcement from SF and it would be a game changer...

This actually puts me off voting for CC...

DublinFemale · 20/09/2025 20:57

it Is really bugging me that political parties and councillors appear to have manipulated the process to nobble independent candidates options.

Ya, distant cousin, can't think of her name, she did the podcast with Tommy Tiernan and Hector

eggandonion · 20/09/2025 23:23

Lauritta Blewitt...and she has a baby with Joe Brolly. Thanks Google.
BUT....Joes first wife seems to be Liam Neesons cousin. These people are what we need in a presidential election.
The Sinn Fein super reveal thing was really unprofessional.

Abhannmor · 21/09/2025 12:02

Brolly is well connected then.

I see Geldof says he's might have run for FF. He was always a conservative - when it comes to money .

Phase42 · 22/09/2025 08:54

I really hope both Sheridan and Steen get the votes before Weds....opens up proper discussion. I agree that is is very unfair of politicians to tell local Councillors how to vote.

I'd never actually vote for Steen....I would consider voting Sheridan.

Abhannmor · 22/09/2025 09:27

Sheridan seems like a very shrewd businessman. He knows a lot about medical instruments and pharmaceuticals. But I'm not sure he knows very much about Irish society in general? His experience seems deep but narrow.

But yeah id vote for him if the alternative was some racist or religious extremist.

PotterHead1985 · 22/09/2025 10:52

Yea its looking very like a 3 horse race unless steen manages to grab the 20. And I am still in the who tf do I vote for. Looking like a case of picking the least worst option in my case

Phase42 · 22/09/2025 15:47

If it's just the three then it will be a very lacklustre campaign.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 23/09/2025 13:54

Sheridan is officially out. Steen still needs a few more backers and I'm not sure she'll do it. So does that mean it'll be a two-horse race?! I can't imagine that, but at least it will make the counting quicker!

BruachAbhann · 23/09/2025 14:13

I think Steen might make it in. She's three away. I really hope she does for the sake of having a more democratic election.

eggandonion · 23/09/2025 15:00

I assume she is good at debates as a barrister. That might add interest to things.

Onehorsetown · 24/09/2025 11:57

Looks like Steen is out. I am surprised McDowell didn't back her. They worked together on the last Referendum.
For someone who only decided to run last month she came very close. I think it would have made a more interesting race to have her in the ballot.
I think that those who failed to nominate her and let the people decide, really failed to do their job as independent senators and TD's.
Sheridan also came pretty close. I didn't know much about his politics, but he would have put up a good battle I think.

I am, for the first time ever, inclined not to vote.
The 3 on the ballot are just so bland and uninspiring.

eggandonion · 24/09/2025 12:03

Maybe they will turn out to be fabulous candidates with amazing ideas... so far I don't particularly feel inspired.

Mermoose · 24/09/2025 13:15

BruachAbhann · 24/09/2025 15:45

I'm gutted Maria Steen didn't get in. The whole thing is shambolic! I've no interest in any of the candidates as president and for the first time ever I'm going to spoil my vote (and write Maria Steen across it!). So much for a democratic society.

Livingthebestlife · 25/09/2025 09:23

I'm so mad that Maria Steen didn't get in. Jim will obviously get elected because of his GAA connections, this Country is GAA obsessed everyone will vote for him.

Turquoisemask · 25/09/2025 10:21

I won’t!
Don’t like the fact he is ex-military and I’ve no interest in GAA so really don’t see that as a positive in any way.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 25/09/2025 10:23

It just seems so wrong that Government parties were able to instruct councillors not to back independent candidates! Where is the democracy?! And where is the public outrage about it? Whether or not Steen (or any other hopefuls) would have been successful, surely we should have had a choice?
