I'm in NI and know very little about Irish politics, but is there even a slight chance that McGregor could win? Never thought Trump would end up as US president even once never mind twice!

Nah. Hutch didn't get in for example. He wouldnt be acceptable in much of rural Ireland. That's a lot of conservative votes , small c . Then nobody on the left will touch him. Perhaps he imagines Trump will sprinkle him with magic pixie dust. But it's kind of a long shot. Taco is rotting before our very eyes...

PegDope · 07/09/2025 12:39

Catherine will get my vote but beyond that I have no idea.

Nope, not a hope. Although it would be fun to watch him shrink and shrivel when he is eliminated in first count.

TaTuirseOrm · 07/09/2025 14:55

I can't see Conor McG even getting a nomination, I'll be astounded of he does!

Feels like a Mickey Mouse election, but DS who just turned 18 is very excited to vote for the first time.

Only 2 options in US, not the same.

I agree, but it would be so much fun to watch him when he has his X and insta lash out after his pity party coke binge after the elimination.

Thanks everyone for putting my mind at rest!

McG would have to overcome the first hurdle: getting nominated.
You can't just put yourself forward to be on the ballot paper, you have to be nominated by at least 20 members of the Oireachtas or at least four local authorities, and it's highly unlikely that McG would get anything like that.

The very thought that anyone would think that a violent rapist would make a good 'First Citizen' is horrifying.

DublinFemale · 08/09/2025 11:27

There are a lot idiots out there, a lot of which believe the case was rigged against him. The good news is they are not inclined to be registered to vote and ones that are wouldn’t bother getting out of bed unless there is something in it for them.

CMG instagram begging video tells us all he is not even a blip let along a serious contender.

Purely for the FU it would be from public when he is knocked out in first count, I would half like him on the ballot.

Don't attack me, I’m not a CMG voter but I do like a laugh at his expense.

MarieDeGournay · 08/09/2025 11:37

Eh.... reading back the replies to my post about Liam Neeson for President- just to make clear: it wasn't serious, it was a humorous suggestion based on his 'I will find you and I will kill you' Taken persona and how that would stop countries messing with Ireland

Just imagine the Oval Office meeting between that Liam Neeson character and Trump, about putting tariffs on Irish-made pharmaceuticals...
You do that, Donald, and I will find you...😁

eggandonion · 08/09/2025 13:28

I actually prefer Liam to the current candidates and potential candidates. Although I'm sure he has skeletons in his cupboard that the press would dig out.

TartanCulshie · 08/09/2025 13:38

What do we think of ML McD ruling herself out?

It would have put a bit of buzz about the whole thing.

I'd say Jim Gavin is a strong contender. His work changing the football rules will appeal to a lot of non party folk. I could imagine the 2 johnnies supporting him.

eggandonion · 08/09/2025 14:29

My son in law thinks the gaa rule changes will work in his favour. I'm not sure if any of the other voters in my immediate family know what the rule changes are.
Now Marty Morrissey...I might consider him. I have a selfy with him. I still prefer Liam. Or Dr Mike Ryan from the UN.
When do names have to be finalised?
Surely we know everything about Bertie by now? I think Dr Tony pulled out because of all the muckraking. Its never a pleasant spectacle.

DublinFemale · 08/09/2025 14:44

Jim Gavin will appeal to a lot of GAA fans but could lose some Connacht and Munster vote because of GAA.

I don’t believe she was ever an option. It was all buzz to get people talking.

this really bothers me.

It smacks of controlling the masses. still a bit sore we didn’t do what we were told in March 2024 maybe. The work around control the names on the ballot

It should be up to us, let us the public decide.

I was seriously considering Mairead McGuinness. I like her, but she Is gone.

I won’t vote for any political party endorsed candidate.

This may just be the first time I destroy my vote.

I am undecided about Steen, but I agree with Toibin on this.
I know Harris said yesterday that FG aren't going to endorse anyone but their own candidate, which is understandable. But there is a difference between abstaining from endorsing a candidate and actively trying to block their nomination.
It should be up to the voters to make that decision.

DublinFemale · 09/09/2025 18:14

The government parties blocking or controlling the nominations could become the main talking point of this election.

Its a sad reflection on their faith in their nominated candidate that they don’t believe they can win without some shape or form of skullduggery.

deeahgwitch · 09/09/2025 18:31

Is Maria Steen the niece of Joan Freeman the founder of Pieta House ?

Yes, I thought that was partly was scuppered Joan's run in previous election so interesting Maria is going in herself

TaTuirseOrm · 09/09/2025 18:36

Jim Gavin is on RTƉ news right now. He's not bad, but needs more media training I think.

Abhannmor · 09/09/2025 20:47

Did Gavin say he wants to abolish the triple lock on neutrality? Not a popular one methinks.

He said he was in favour of abolishing the triple lock.

Not sure how I feel about abolishing the triple lock.

I am so disillusioned with the majority of current TDs that having the UN approval gives a me a feeling of security.

I simply do not trust current TDs to tamper with our neutrality (as it is) anymore than they have.

Just my own personal feeling on it.

DublinFemale · 09/09/2025 23:02

I’m really lost on who if anyone to choose.

I will use my vote even if it just destroy it
