I'm not quite sure who the candidates are. There's been a lot of rumours and a lot of potential candidates withdrawing. However, hell will freeze over before I'd vote for Bertie Ahern or Conor McGregor.

deeahgwitch · 31/08/2025 09:41

i’m with you there @TaytocrispsšŸ˜€
Won’t Jim Gavin be up against the AnyoneButDublin camp in the election?

Dont know much about Gavin except Fianna FƔil are backing him. I'm voting Catherine Connolly but will maybe give him my second preference , especially if it looks like one of the loopy far right is in with a chance.

This is pretty much where I am.
Can't believe Bertie would even have the cheek to run, but he did always think he was God's gift!
As for McGregor - who on earth would even vote for him? I guess the same people who voted for Hutch in the GE?

Still waiting to be inspired by a candidate.
All seems to have gone quiet on the Michael Flatley front, is he no longer considering it or can he not get the support?

MILLYmo0se · 31/08/2025 10:54

I'm ABB but because of brown envelopes and no bank accounts etc rather than his Government, he's never believed rules or the law actually apply to him. He's a shyster who also did wonderful wonderful work with the GF Agreement, he doesn't need to be any further financially supported by the taxpayer imo.
Catherine Connolly will be my number 1, not sure after that

TaTuirseOrm · 31/08/2025 10:59

... brown envelopes and no bank accounts etc... ... never believed rules or the law actually apply to him.

That's my objection to BA too!

Abhannmor · 31/08/2025 14:22

Berties government was crap too. Pissed away a great chance to fix housing , health , transport. Too busy privatising everything and helping vital sectors - like the betting industry. Unless you argue he was too thick anyway and the Thatcherites led him by the nose ? McCreevy and Harney ....

Oh absolutely his Government was crap too, not disputing that at all, just saying I already rule him out because of his own crap before I even get as far as considering how he was in Government if that makes sense.
No I wouldn't ever call him thick tbh, he manages to hide it all behind the 'man of the people' facade but at the V least he is shrewd and cunning, v able to read people and situations

TomBaileysFlyingGoggles · 02/09/2025 12:55

Hell will freeze over before I vote for Bertie Ahern. Even Charlie Haughey thought he was a slĆbhĆn! I can't see any county council or group of TDs nominating McGregor, he's just too toxic.
Jim Gavin seems like a nice man, certainly a brilliant manager but I don't see how that qualifies him as President. The Fianna Fail nomination also doesn't endear him to me. (I am from Dublin so it's not anti dub sentiment). Catherine Connolly should appeal to me more, but I don't like her links to Clare Daly and Mick Wallace. I'm politically homeless the last few years. Left leaning, vaguely socialist, definitely second wave feminist type. I've never voted FF, FG or PBP. I thought the Social Democrats might be a contender for my vote for a while but I have no trust in their leadership. It'll be interesting to see who else throws their hat into the ring now.

Edited spelling

MsFelicityLemon · 02/09/2025 18:35

Apparently Joanna Donnelly has thrown her hat in the ring.

I don't recall any other election being this mad. Or did I just missed it all before?

deeahgwitch · 02/09/2025 18:38

šŸ™„ it’s gone mad.

Joanna Donnelly!! Well you have to admire her chutzpah, who exactly other than than her mirror reflection is telling her she'd make a great president? Mo Chriost! I'd nearly go back to the old days of the government nominating a candidate and no election required! Once it's not Bertie🤣🤣 It's going to be an interesting couple of months anyway.

MsFelicityLemon · 02/09/2025 19:26

I mean she couldn't manage the Civil Service Code of Conduct, but sure why not the presidency.

Magnalux · 02/09/2025 19:53

Yea I’m not sure Joanna is as popular as she thinks she is, which she may soon find out!!!

deeahgwitch · 03/09/2025 08:52

ā€œā€¦ā€¦ā€¦who exactly other than her mirror reflection is telling her she’d make a great president……….ā€

You are bold @TomBaileysFlyingGogglesšŸ˜‚

Just watch Tonight Show on catch up. It appears she has had no political advice and her friends suggested it and supported her. That's nuts!!

I mean I can imagine after a drunken night you might think you could open a restaurant based on your friends liking the food you made or even (as in this case) run for president. But surely in the morning you realism would dawn. Her friends must have thought she was joking!!!

Phase42 · 03/09/2025 09:24

It's a very weak group of Candidates... Bob Geldof?! I wouldn't rule out Joanna Donnelly yet - I like the idea of her focusing on climate and environment. I'm not sure I could take all the weather related jokes though!

He'll would freeze over before I'd give Bertie a vote...things have gone quiet there?

What? Bob Geldof? I thought you were joking but you're not.
Yet, he's not even the worst of them!

MsFelicityLemon · 03/09/2025 16:37

Paddy Power has Bob Geldof at 33/1. 🤣

Does he even live in Ireland anymore?

TaTuirseOrm · 03/09/2025 17:53

All seems to have gone quiet on the Michael Flatley side, has he pulled out?
At this rate I may aswell run for it myself šŸ˜†

Taytocrisps · 03/09/2025 18:17

It's all a bit mad Ted. I've never known a Presidential campaign like it. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if I heard that Shergar was entering the race (no pun intended). Anyway, I'll be away on the 24th, so I won't be able to vote for anyone.

halfpasteleven · 03/09/2025 22:11

Taytocrisps · 04/09/2025 08:34

Joanna's not the worst choice. I mean, she's a familiar face as a meteorologist. And she's published some books about weather, which gave her more exposure. She's an intelligent lady. She's 54 (she looks younger), so she has a bit of life experience.

Bob Geldoff, on the other hand........ Now, I've a soft spot for Bob. I was there all through the Band Aid and Live Aid years. And I've a lot of respect for the part he played in cancelling third world debt. But he would be a terrible choice for President. It's a role which requires tact and diplomacy. Bob has all the tact of a bull in a china shop. Surely entering politics as a Councillor, MP or TD would serve him (and us) better.

Will this work? Not so sure Joanna has a clue!

Agree with you about Bob G @Taytocrisps - while I have no doubt he's a great man for rallying the troops, he absolutely does not have the diplomacy that a president needs. We'll be forever subjected to that Live Aid clip... give us your fucking money!
(I'm probably misquoting)
