Wouldn't just failing to vote and having a drastically low turnout give the same message? I'm just not clear how wasting a vote is a better option than just not voting

No, I don't agree. I think not voting shows apathy whereas making the effort to go out but spoil the vote shows that I do care.

I intend to vote for Jim Gavin despite knowing that if a lot of us do that:

FF will get their money back

He might decide he's going to grab power on the back of a win

SFFFFG might conspire to place Bertie Ahern or some other weird antique

We might end up with another choice of Tweedledee and Tweedledum party hacks.

But at least it will be a protest and they'll have to count it.

Describing Bertie as a weird antique truly delights me.

DeanElderberry · 14/10/2025 18:20

I'm not wrong you know

eggandonion · 14/10/2025 23:09

That's an interesting point...and x is a spoiled vote. I still have to choose 1 and 2...possibly 3. I think Bertie would be good at all the chit chat with important people who might not have a clue what he was saying. I'm not sure if I would like him signing legislation.
I might just scribble Liam Neeson on my ballot paper. With my wee pencil. As I dream of the electronic voting machines back in Berties day.

DublinFemale · 15/10/2025 08:35

If CC is has outspoken as I think she will be. I think it will be a 1 termer. She may just do enough damage to herself for the electorate to vote her out in 7 years.

it’s an absolute mess. This why MM should only be trotted out with prepared statements and under no circumstances be allowed to make a decision about what socks to wear let alone anything else. This entire shambles is of MM making and his deliberate populist political tactics.

ColadhSamh · 15/10/2025 08:52

Catherine Connolly has come under immense pressure in interviews unlike Heather Humphreys. She has remained calm and composed always answering politely and respectfully. Why do some interviewers think shouting, bring abrupt and talking over the interviewee is a good look?

elgreco · 15/10/2025 09:43

I'll vote hh on the basis that she knows what a women is.

elgreco · 15/10/2025 09:43

I'll vote hh on the basis that she knows what a women is.

But she isn't quite sure, unfortunately. She's said it's 'complicated' (it really isn't Heather) and then waffled about people 'transitioning' which to me sounds like she believes people can transition to the opposite sex.

elgreco · 15/10/2025 13:47

Shit, is CC totally on board the trans train?

DeanElderberry · 15/10/2025 14:07

Of course she is, can't you tell that just by looking at her. She is the quintessential holy wee woman of the early 21st century omnicause. Pious and compliant.

deeahgwitch · 15/10/2025 14:11

elgreco · 15/10/2025 09:43

I'll vote hh on the basis that she knows what a women is.

She was the Director of Referenda last year when the Government were pushing for a Yes vote.
She said recently that the referendum was defeated because we, the electorate didn’t understand.
She won’t get my vote.
Nor will CC

Shit, is CC totally on board the trans train?

Completely, totally 100%.
She had Jenny Craig Maguire of f*ck TERFs fame canvassing for her.
I think HH personally knows what a woman is but she has always toed the party line and that won't change if she is President.

Yep. In a recent radio interview she was talking about how there are 'infinite genders' and how we all just need to be kind and crack on with it Hmm

Edited

There isnt a least worst option to vote for...i cannot vote for hh as she can only spout the party line. I 1000% cannot vote CC...the more I see and hear from her the more she scares me. Shes a total chameleon who should be in a little red riding hood remake... she gives off innocent kind granny vibes, shes on my side etc etc but behind that is someone steely with extreme beliefs. No way will never vote for her!

DeanElderberry · 15/10/2025 16:28

The only thing that could give us a different choice would be Gavin topping the poll. Without that, we're stuck with one or other of those. I don't want FG HH and I want CC much less.

I'd say it's a farce, but it isn't funny.

HayGal · 15/10/2025 16:32

100% @DeanElderberry so I will add a 1 next to Mr Gavins name. Fold the voting slip and drop it into the box and wait to see what happens. Even if he's corrupt and accepts theres grounds for court action.

Onehorsetown · 15/10/2025 17:08

Waiting on the official ruling next week but this is an interesting development. Can the election be postponed if he rules it was unconstitutional for FG to use the whip on it's members?

TaTuirseOrm · 15/10/2025 18:03

@haygal and @DeanElderberry you've both said exactly how I feel.... I'm really struggling 😩 between a rock and a hard place.

HayGal · 15/10/2025 18:15

@TaTuirseOrm its a total shit show! But FF have given us plan B so let's not waste it. Do as I am and the outcome can't be any worse than beevis or butthead getting elected. It could deliver big time by triggering mehole martin getting ditched as taoiseach.
Honestly I'm mystified as to why people are spoiling their vote by adding random names and comments when voting Jim Gavin could trigger huge changes.

BruachAbhann · 15/10/2025 18:53

He might accept the presidency though, that's the risk too.

DeanElderberry · 15/10/2025 20:29

BruachAbhann · 15/10/2025 18:53

He could do that, but he'd be such damaged goods that I find it hard to believe he'd stay in office for long. Whereas being stuck with either of the others for 7 long years - ugh.

anamo · 15/10/2025 21:12

I'm voting for JG. No other prefs, I am not comfortable with either CC or HH, although HH shades it for maybe NOT putting foot in mouth too much. I'm sad that I can't vote for either woman in the race though.

Voting for Gavin on principle. So what if FF get their money back, I don't care about that, in the big scheme it's buttons. What might be achieved if Gavin gets past the post is the potential for drama and change, and a bloody nose to some. I'd like that.

I also see the challenge mentioned above which is very very interesting. Anyone know much about Cora Stack?

ā€œSo is it a biological woman, someone who is born a woman?ā€ Connolly was probed. ā€œThere’s a small group of people who wish to identify in a different manner than I do. I accept that completely; I think that’s not a big challenge to a democracy, to a healthy society, and that’s all I can say really,ā€
