Irish posters - "having a paddy"

Irish posters - can I canvas your opinions on the use of "having a paddy" to mean "having a tantrum"? I've been having a bit of back and forth (well, plenty of forth not much back in truth) with MNHQ over the past day or two and I want to check that I'm not going against the majority view here.

IMO, the phrase is awful, and plainly anti Irish. I know most people using it aren't doing so to slag Irish people off, but the phrase is still awful IMO.

I've been here a long time, and reported the phrase more than I can remember. Usually, it's just deleted right away. Raising it on a thread always derails it as people just go on the offensive.

I reported it yesterday and got the immediate email that it was being checked out, but the post stayed up for hours despite a follow up email, another post and a thread in Site Stuff. It was then edited rather than deleted, which I thought was the norm for offensive language. I reported another use this morning and it's still up.

What are your views? Is this a fight worth having with MNHQ or am I out of step with the majority of Irish posters on here?

Thanks :)

Dammit I wish I said that instead of my rant 😂

No I thought your post was interesting.

OP is the one that just seems to rant at people and not take any feedback

It does go in cycles. We were flavour of the month starting in the mid 90s. Switching back a bit since Brexit. Also noticed an uptick in anti Scottish comments since then. Nothing happens in a vacuum I guess.

Honestly I think it's gotten much worse since the Irish government spoke out against the Israeli government's actions in Gaza. I thought it was improving before that. It was also terrible on the boards around Brexit but it didn't seem like MNHQ were in on it then. Things seem different now.

Well I agreed with pretty much every word of your rant, fwiw.

I just think it's ridiculous to go and USE a British forum, which you do, and then complain about British people, which you do.

I don't think she ranted at all. She gave a well written response.

That's mature Barbara!

You were complimenting me the other day.

I don't think I've ever complained about British people as if they're a monolith. Perhaps I have, kudos if you're going to post the receipts, but it's not my typical style.

I don't think you're engaging on this thread or others in good faith, which colours my willingness to reply thoughtfully to you. Not to mention you've effectively told me to go back where I came from.

Yes.

I reply to however your posting behaviour is.

If you say "it's none of your business " to someone, you'll get a similiar response.

The thread has been quiet for days and then you posted this evening to essentially tell me to fuck off if I don't like MNHQ changing their moderation policy on anti Irish slurs. It's not me who lowered the tone this evening.

We see you, we know what you're doing.

I haven't seen many Irish people saying they don't care. Most do care, a couple of others have said they were going to email MNHQ, at least one of whom did as she posted the replies. You yourself have stated that you think it should be deleted.

If MNHQ hadn't changed their policy I wouldn't have made a single post about the issue, and if they'd acknowledged the change in policy then perhaps the issue would have closed sooner.

I don't think I've gone on and on, I started this thread to canvas the views of other Irish posters, which was useful. Yes, given I started the thread I've kept up with it and I'm a big girl who can stand up for herself when challenged.

Agree 💯

Of course you agree @WaveyGodshawk there is a couple of you on here that are like a pack, with no independent thought. You say exactly the same things as each other.

You never disagree with each other.

And when one posts the other one always posts saying

"I agree " or "100 percent."

JaneJeffer · 09/12/2024 20:02

Not to mention you've effectively told me to go back where I came from.
Absolutely. Disgusting behaviour.

Here comes another one from the pack!
Like clockwork!

You proved what I said.

The pack agree with each other, and back each other up.

They just come on to say "yeah you're right!"

Or "100 percent!" Or "absolutely!"

Lallydallydune · 09/12/2024 20:04

I actually got a DM from someone about the "pack" on here.

So predictable Jane. So predicatable.

Powderblue1 · 09/12/2024 20:07

Omg I never knew this term was offensive to Irish people. Having read this post though it's so obvious why. I suppose you just grow up with certain sayings and don't always think to understand the context.

My husband is half Irish too!

Lallydallydune · 09/12/2024 20:08

This is the PM that someone sent me about the pack on this thread

"I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time on the Craicnet thread . Some of those characters act in a pack to silence anyone who doesn’t completely agree. You were very reasonable."

Thank you to the person who sent me it.

It's your behaviour that has been consistently disgusting.
You pop on, say a nasty one liner, then pop off.

Can you ever write anything nice?

Oh dear god 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
Or maybe I just was gobsmacked by your astoundingly rude post and felt compelled to call you out.
And I agree with Barbara because she said what many of us reading your posts are thinking. Not because we're a pack but because it's glaringly obvious that you have some sort of agenda to anyone with basic awareness.
And rather than dm someone I will publicly stand by my opinions

You do act like a pack @waveygodshawk.

I've never seen you write one thing that's different in opinion from @BarbaraHoward .

Do you have independent thought.

As I've said , I've had a poster dm me telling me that posters such as yourself and a few others act like a pack - to silence others that disagree with them.

You have a pack mentality.

If I post to one of you, one of the other three reply.

You said "What many of us reading your posts are thinking?"

Really? Speak for yourself. I've had a dm supporting me, and thinking that your behaviour is awful

I see you didn't respond to what that poster said.

You glossed over that nicely.

What's your thoughts on that poster thinking that you act like a pack, silencing people that disagree with you
