Irish posters - "having a paddy"

Irish posters - can I canvas your opinions on the use of "having a paddy" to mean "having a tantrum"? I've been having a bit of back and forth (well, plenty of forth not much back in truth) with MNHQ over the past day or two and I want to check that I'm not going against the majority view here.

IMO, the phrase is awful, and plainly anti Irish. I know most people using it aren't doing so to slag Irish people off, but the phrase is still awful IMO.

I've been here a long time, and reported the phrase more than I can remember. Usually, it's just deleted right away. Raising it on a thread always derails it as people just go on the offensive.

I reported it yesterday and got the immediate email that it was being checked out, but the post stayed up for hours despite a follow up email, another post and a thread in Site Stuff. It was then edited rather than deleted, which I thought was the norm for offensive language. I reported another use this morning and it's still up.

What are your views? Is this a fight worth having with MNHQ or am I out of step with the majority of Irish posters on here?

Thanks :)

I once met a British soldier who told me he had joined the army so that he could go to Belfast and kill Irish people.

DeanElderberry · 04/12/2024 17:21

if people join the British army they don't get any say on where they are sent to. They are told where to go by the men at the very top.

Do the people at the very top order them to tell offensive 'jokes' in market towns, or do they do that by their own choice?

I don't believe that for a second Jane.

Everything you write on here gets more extreme, strange, and anti - British every time you post.

That's not a good way to be.

Try to calm down.

No and I didn't say they did , did I.

I said the the soldiers that went to Northern Ireland were told to go there.

They don't make the decisions.

As they always say about armies

"it's old men that make the decisions, and they send young men to be killed"

DeanElderberry · 04/12/2024 17:26

@Lallydallydune are you really that naive about the motivations and actions of some of the UK army's soldiers in Northern Ireland? I suggest you educate yourself. You might also have a look at the paramilitaries from Northern Ireland who were aligned with the UK forces.

ps, this was a response to your post addressed to @JaneJeffer . You clearly don't know anything about the history of recent conflict in your own country.

I'm not naive about anything pet. Soldiers don't make decisions on where they go.

They are given assignments.

We all know that surely.

DeanElderberry · 04/12/2024 17:29

And I would appreciate a comment on those 'jokes' that were being told by men pointing guns at me.

@deanelderberry wow.

You said : I don't know ANYTHING about the history of my own country.

What a stupid statement.

How could anyone possibly live in Ireland , and not know anything about the history of Ireland.

What an silly thing to write.

Not to be too blunt, but many (most?) Irish people wouldn't see joining the British army as a particularly honourable choice for fairly obvious reasons, so this argument doesn't carry much weight. Conscription was a long time ago.

Gangs and Counter-gangs, Bloody Sunday, Operation Demetrius, the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, Ballymurphy, the B-Specials, the laws enacted in Westminster in the last year to prevent anyone who lost someone during the troubles to seek prosecution of either terrorist or military culprits.

I am not a pet, and you are either naive or actively malign.

Of course whoever did that to you was a horrible person.

I'm just of the opinion that wars happen everywhere.

So many countries have been invaded in our worlds history.

Ireland was not the only country to have been invaded.

It's time to move on.

Ukraine is currently being invaded by Russia. I've seen Ukrainians and Russians sit down together and have great chats with each other.

Wars happen. You have to forgive and move forward.

I didn't know adults wrote "PMSL" these days.

My 12 year old cousin uses it.

Are you not a bit too old to be writing that?

JaneJeffer · 04/12/2024 17:42

I'm young at heart @Lallydallydune and there's always someone around to give me a good laugh on here

Ah Jane will you ever grow up . Talking to you is like talking to a two year old.

I won't reply to you anymore. I want to talk to adults.

DeanElderberry · 04/12/2024 18:18

Of course whoever did that to you was a horrible person.

It wasn't 'a person'. It was the whole group of soldiers in a small cathedral city who had no idea that I was a visitor rather than a resident. I doubt they would behave that way in Ripon or Wells. People I know who lived in NI through the troubles have told me that it was not unusual. At least they didn't find an excuse to shoot me. They all had English rather than Scottish or Welsh accents.

DeanElderberry · 04/12/2024 18:22

But you are hilarious @Lallydallydune , full of righteous indignation and constantly changing your story to justify your defence of abusive language 'just because'.

Haha.

Youre so utterly predictable Deanelderberry .

Of course you were going to wade in, (to a conversation that was absolutely nothing to do with you ), and insult me.

Utterly predictable .

The two of you write the exact same things.

I see that you like to insult other people a lot.

Do you ever think that maybe YOU annoy other people?

Are you able to let each other speak for themselves?

JaneJeffer · 04/12/2024 18:37

It wasn't clear who you were referring to @Lallydallydune because you included two people in your post
