It's good to hear about all the other Irish athletes at the Olympics - well done to all of them for getting there!

We went to the rowing and roared on Paul and Fintan, and were sitting beside the parents of one of the Greeks who got bronze, who were adorable and crying so loudly with pride they nearly drowned out everything else.

This is lovely!

@Happiestwhen
You can watch the fight on iPlayer. It's under day 11, extra and it's the last 20 minutes or so.

Tickandtock · 07/08/2024 12:15

I really hope the govt plough money into Olympic sports after this, we are having an incredible games. My dc are inspired to try some new sports after being glued to the Olympics & screaming Team Ireland on! So proud to be Irish!

TaraMock · 07/08/2024 12:38

This is our most successful Olympics ever - well done to all the medallists, and also the athletes who gave it their all in their own sports.

I'm delighted Kellie got her gold, and not to put down our other boxers, but I'm also really delighted that our medals were across a variety of sports not just boxing.

The taekwondo seems to have the red and blue thing as well. I don't get why? The judges still know what country they're from anyway!

@Happiestwhen that explains why they were watching RTÉ in Armagh when they went there for a chat to another boxer (can't think of his name) much to the surprise of Joanne Cantwell seeing herself on screen!

Pretty sure that was in Paris not Armagh

JaneJeffer · 07/08/2024 17:25

Oh right

JaneJeffer · 07/08/2024 19:09

Come on Jack!

JaneJeffer · 07/08/2024 19:45

Rhasidat time!

WaveyGodshawk · 07/08/2024 19:52

Well done Rhasidat!! 🇮🇪

JaneJeffer · 07/08/2024 19:09

Come on Jack!

Feel bad for Jack 😔 Was really hoping he'd get through.

Well done Rhasidat, we were all screaming at the telly here.

Well done Rhasidat! The winner of the other race was so fast! Those false starts must be really annoying.

JaneJeffer · 07/08/2024 21:03

Poor Matthew Hudson Smith of GB losing out at the very end. Nice of him to do an interview with RTÉ afterwards.

TaraMock · 07/08/2024 21:37

That was a heart breaking race to watch for Matthew Hudson Smith, but OMG what a race by the American (whose name escapes me!)

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 07/08/2024 22:11

Shoot! I missed Rhasidat's race!

Tickandtock · 07/08/2024 22:15

Rashidat's final will be amazing, such a strong field. So delighted for Sarah Lavin too. So many fabulous female role models on Team Ireland. I really pray that the govt pumps even more money into Olympic sports, our wonderful athletes have given the country such a boost over the past 10 days.

junebirthdaygirl · 07/08/2024 22:46

Ireland has the most medals per million in population in the whole world! Come on lreland..so proud of all the athletes.

BiddyPop · 08/08/2024 08:51

We were at the cycling yesterday- Ireland not competing, they're on again tomorrow but we had to book what we could way back before we knew what sessions IE would be in.

It's great to see the spread of medals and colours, and to see the athletes who came so close to getting on the podium as well for various reasons, and getting PBs in some cases even if not getting in the medals.

Hopefully the Government will finally start putting proper money into sport. Good news that the velodrome project was finally announced too in recent days.

(We have interests in sailing, hockey and cycling in our house - hockey or cycling being the potential reasons we'd get to LA, but we're interested in all sports generally, and not just at olympics time).

Tickandtock · 08/08/2024 09:03

@BiddyPop wow! My dd would love to start hockey. I do hope the govt invest probably we could be a major force on the world scence.
My dc are big into canoeing so we were delighted to see the Irish athletes represented. Canoeing Ireland seems to have had a lot of investment recently too but we need more slalom courses throughout the country.
The GAA traditionally has always had huge funding (& in fairness clubs are amazing & very innovative when it comes to fundraising) it would be brilliant if all Olympic sports where we have potential qualifiers were state sponsored. It needs to happen ASAP as we look towards L.A in '28 & Brisbane in' 32.

JaneJeffer · 09/08/2024 18:11

Aww just watching Rhasidat's mother being interviewed 🥹

JaneJeffer · 09/08/2024 19:08

She did great but it was such a fast race

JaneJeffer · 09/08/2024 19:26

I think Sonia is half steamed most of the time!

Tickandtock · 09/08/2024 19:26

I think Rhasidat will be back on the relay team tomo, they have a real shot at a medal 🙏

TaraMock · 09/08/2024 19:40

That sounds fantastic @BiddyPop, I'd love to go to the games some day!

It was a super fast race @JaneJeffer, Rhasidat did so well!! I enjoyed listening to Dervla O'Rourke in the studio afterwards.

Did anyone else have problems hearing Rhasidat in her interview after the race? Sounded like the mic wasn't on, very hard to hear in this house.

JaneJeffer · 09/08/2024 19:48

I couldn't hear properly either and I stood right in front of the telly.
