Exactly - there were quite a few races and events where Irish athletes came fourth, got PBs and National Records, and did fantastically well. We are a small island country with a relatively small population and have done extraordinarily well in these games!
We are currently sitting 19TH on the medals table (a few more to be decided, we're unlikely to get more but there may be small changes if any below us get more).
But we are ranked 26th in the world for GDP (overall - 3rd if you look at GDP per capita), and only 124th in the world for population size.
But we are also high up, at 17th of 143 countries measured, on the well being index.
What I am worried about is the drop off from sport at all ages generally post-Covid but especially by those in their teens and early-20s , both boys and girls. Hopefully the positive benefits of seeing this group do so well will encourage kids to take up a range of sports and continue those they enjoy to a high level. And encourage the national federations to support that properly and not just write off those who weren't able to progress and didn't get the coaching in those lost years.
