Have you got a back up item

I have three items that I always think will save the day. A piece of jewellery, an old phone and an antique glass.

I went to sell the jewellery and found out it’s worthless but I still have the other two.

DM has a clock that she is convinced is worth money if she needs it. She also had a signed first edition Harry Potter book that she put in the bootsale but that’s a whole other thread.

DH has a nice desk clock, a “Jaeger Lecoultre” Atmos one which I think is worth a decent amount.

Did your DH receive it as a gift Wednesday? What a stunning item to own.

No, he bought it himself. He’s never bought anything like it before or since, and it sits on his desk so he can watch it while he works.

It’s the recent model, modern-looking, inside crystal glass.

I have collected those special edition 50 pence coins

GoldCherub · 07/02/2023 23:30

Are they worth anything? We thought we had a rare Paddington Bear one once but no no it wasn’t. Kept us all very excited for a while.

With everyone selling things, who’s going to buy anything? 🤔 I’ve not even got anything…

I've got a Krugerand in my knicker draw

Sock drawer here. 😁

Music gear. Ok some of it I use and gig regularly, but like all musicians, why have one when you can have half a dozen. I know the values and there’s a couple of k there if it came to it.

cars first though. Again I have more than is strictly necessary.

most other stuff around the house doesn’t have much of a second hand value and if it came to be necessary to sell watches, tvs, the washing machine etc I’d be in real trouble…

A few gold pieces from my parents' wedding. Arabs give gold at weddings for precisely that reason, its not meant to be sentimental, you're meant to sell it if you ever run into trouble. But I also don't want to sell it as it belonged to my relatives who have since passed. I suppose I would if I really had to.

ive got a old plug in log style fire . must be 20+ years old .. its come to our rescue a few times . i will not part with it .

I've got a sample pair of DMs that I have seen the mass produced pairs on Etsy for over £400. Still has the original label with hand written date made, last, welt etc. Unfortunately not boxed and have a slight scuff as have been moved around different rooms over the years. Might be worth something, waiting for a vintage clothes fair to appear near me so I can ask some people in the know, hopefully!

I have lots of different and random things!!

my husbands retro car that he brought 10years ago for 5k (all our money in the world), we were only 20 years old and needed money for a house deposit but decided to save up for a extra year and keep the car (cars valued at 25k now)

my Tesla stock I brought maybe 5 years ago.

every year I buy my daughter retro polly pockets for her birthday as I know the price will continue to rise on them.

all my jewellery I could sell if I have to but would be my last resort.

i have brought 2 designer my bags in my life I used my bonuses from work they cost around £1800 and are worth around 3k second hand now. (Chanel)

I will only ever make purchases that will increase my money or I buy from charity shops there is no inbetween in my life😂

me and husband brought a PlayStation 1 like 10 years ago as we grew up on those and lots of retro games there all worth a bit now, my kids like playing on them now too!

next bonus I get I will be buying lithium stock so when I’m dead and gone in 50 years hopefully my kids can say “thank you mummy”

organisedmother · 15/02/2023 20:58

I collect these too for my kids :) I think the Olympic ones are ment to be a good find.

GoldCherub · 15/02/2023 21:54

Our Polly Pockets went to charity. There are some Shopkins in the loft but I don’t remember any of them being particularly rare.

designer bags are a thriving market second hand. Shocking values. I have a 1970s or 80ties Burberry trench that claims to be a size large (14) but is an 8 in today’s sizing. It’s well worn and ripped though.

@organisedmother do you use the car?

@GoldCherub ... did you ask about selling the jewellery to a shop? If so try auction houses (especially jewellery ones) you'll get a better price there.

GoldCherub · 15/02/2023 22:15

I did @ginsparkles it still had some value but more like £100 not the comforting £3,000 I had in mind! Thanks for the tip.
