Have you got a back up item

I have three items that I always think will save the day. A piece of jewellery, an old phone and an antique glass.

I went to sell the jewellery and found out it’s worthless but I still have the other two.

DM has a clock that she is convinced is worth money if she needs it. She also had a signed first edition Harry Potter book that she put in the bootsale but that’s a whole other thread.

I already had to sell anything I had of value when DH was on long term sick.
I’m fucked 🤣🤣🤣

Abeachsomewhere · 27/01/2023 12:09

I have jewellery and coins I could sell if I needed to. I also have a nice handbag collection but imagine that would take longer to liquidate if I really needed cash quickly.

GoldCherub · 27/01/2023 12:19

@Tulipvase 😂 Now I want to know if your item is valuable, it could be couldn’t it! 🤞

Apparently handbags have shot up in value.

I've got some nice jewellery I could sell, and a few pieces of art. Premium bonds I could cash in, some I've had since birth.

I did have a Rolf Harris painting which back in the day was worth £4k and that was always my emergency money but after the scandal I ended up selling it for £400 on eBay to a guy who collected it and asked me to disguise it in a bin bag. Ironically the painting was called "Protecting the Little Ones".

Car and jewellery

Ylvamoon · 27/01/2023 14:11

... I have a few 1st edition/ rare Books. Not that I want to sell them! Took me a long time to save and find decent copies.

I think when times get tough I can sit in my draughty home in my grandfather's armchair, wrapped in my cosy blanket and enjoying reading them! (All of which I already own- so no money spent on anything!)

My Mac book
Dyson hairdryey
Dyson straighteners
Collection of expensive perfume

Confused
LindorDoubleChoc · 27/01/2023 14:19

God no, absolutely nothing. The most valuable item we own is our car - and that's probably worth £2,000 tops.

Thefailinghousewife · 27/01/2023 14:23

When me and DH were on the rocks last summer, I consoled myself with thought I could sell my car (Jag) and watch (Rolex) and probably be okay for a year without income. I have shoes and bags which would resell quite well too, but my jewellery is worth bog all for resale value and my “art” is just photos of the kids and the dogs.

(we are now fine, but I did tell him I’d priced things up and would have no hesitation leaving him in future if he was a knob again - now thinking his life insurance is a better way to go to be honest :D)

otherwayup · 27/01/2023 14:31

I've got a big, mostly very collectible vinyl collection and some vintage clothes and bits & bobs that are worth a bloody fortune.
I'd feel sad to part with any of it but would do if necessary- there only 'things' at the end of the day!

verdantverdure · 27/01/2023 14:31

We did ok selling our second car. Secondhand car prices have clearly shot up here, behind the Brexit Curtain.

I've already sold any clothes, jewellery and handbags that were worth owt. CEX-ed old phones and tablets etc.

I still have my wedding ring.

If it comes to it I'll sell anything that isn't nailed down to pay the mortgage, and the energy bill, and keep us fed.

Sadly we don't have any family heirlooms that are worth anything. Some playbills from 100 year old performances, a couple of medals. A tunic dress from the 1960s. That's it.

ParrotTurtle · 27/01/2023 14:34

My dining table and chairs is worth about £10K.

My DP is hoarding loads of Pokemon cards from his childhood which are worth about £5K. Somehow. 😳

I hope it doesn't come to that. I'd try selling pictures of my battered old feet to dirty old internet bastards before I parted with these items.

TellerTuesday · 27/01/2023 14:41

My loft houses an antique Chinese (creepy as fuck) doll inherited from my DGran and my DGrandfather's stamp collection and various Queen Mother memorabilia. One day in the future I will go on Antiques Roadshow and make enough change or lives forever!

GoldCherub · 27/01/2023 15:01

That’s the spirit TellerTuesday I will be in the queue behind you with my items. Creepy doll in the loft <shudders>

We realised recently that DS2's collection of Star Wars lego sets would probably fetch a couple of £000s. All immaculate, boxed, with all the pieces. And he has LOTS!

DJSteves · 27/01/2023 19:00

I've got a Krugerand in my knicker draw

My body, if someone is desperate enough!

Haha. Same

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 27/01/2023 19:30

Recently sold my crappy old car for £800 as I'm on zero maternity pay currently.

My house is packed with stuff as I'm a bit of a hoarder. I'm trying to sell a lot of stuff on eBay at the moment just to clear space but it's hardly going to save us if we desperately needed £500 for example.

Keeping my fingers crossed we find hidden treasure as we're renovating our house 😄. I do have an engagement and wedding ring to sell but they're probably worth next to nothing (I've also lost my current engagement ring somewhere in the house).

WednesdaysNameIsFullOfWoe · 27/01/2023 19:41

DH has a nice desk clock, a “Jaeger Lecoultre” Atmos one which I think is worth a decent amount.

AnneElliott · 27/01/2023 19:58

We have a painting we could sell - think it's worth about £1k. I have some jewellery but that wouldn't fetch much I don't think.

SouperNoodle · 27/01/2023 20:00

If we were desperate, we'd sell my engagement ring. It's worth a fair amount and could probably tide us over for a couple of months.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 27/01/2023 20:02

DH has many, many, MANY model railway engines and carriages and other stuff that would go well on ebay if he were to shuffle off before I.

RobinRobinMouse · 27/01/2023 20:08

No, we don't really own anything valuable - jewellery etc. Maybe the car, but we live somewhere that means that would make life quite difficult.

GoldCherub · 27/01/2023 20:15

Wednesday I’ve googled that, very decent back up item.

Wednesday I’ve googled that, very decent back up item.

It’d break his heart if we ever needed to sell it, so it’d be one of the last things to go.
