Have you got a back up item

I have three items that I always think will save the day. A piece of jewellery, an old phone and an antique glass.

I went to sell the jewellery and found out it’s worthless but I still have the other two.

DM has a clock that she is convinced is worth money if she needs it. She also had a signed first edition Harry Potter book that she put in the bootsale but that’s a whole other thread.

If i was desperate for money i have a return to tiffany bracelet that was bought in tiffanys in paris complete with paperwork and receipt would fetch a couple of hundred pounds on ebay and odds and sods that are gold so pawn shop for them

Inextremis · 26/01/2023 18:44

DH has great life insurance ;)

GoldCherub · 26/01/2023 18:57

@Inextremis enough to factor in a new patio is ideal.

@Isseywith3witchycats that sounds gorgeous.

I’m thinking of selling my items now before I ever need to as I imagine if everyone is selling their treasures there might be less buyers.

I get a comfort value by having items that I could sell. Mainly because I think they are worth much more than they are!

No, unless it's something I own that's valuable without my knowing it. I was surprised to see a toy I bought in 1988 for 99p in the 99p shop (and still own) listed on eBay for £75 (don't know if it sold for that) but that's about it for hidden gems.

GoldCherub · 26/01/2023 19:20

I didn’t know my phone was valuable until someone told me. It’s 1940ties. I expect it’s worth a couple of hundred but in my mind I’ve valued it at several thousand.

A quick Google seems to suggest anything from £100 - £1000 depending on what type it is.

My body, if someone is desperate enough!

GoldCherub · 26/01/2023 19:34

Yes that’s what I thought @PlaitBilledDuckyPuss but it was my grandads and still has his writing in the little pull out draw. It’s a standard one that was given out by BT. What’s your toy?

DH had toy cars but he sold them and paid for all the kit for our kitten. Excellent swap.

My car, if I was desperate. It's worth a couple of grand, 11 years old.

Nothing else of value.

No expensive jewellery.

All my furniture is second hand.

popyourcollar · 26/01/2023 19:35

I've got an Ercol sofa that I might be able to get £500 for. Otherwise nothing of value!

I have an occasional table which was always referred to as the "[famous designer] table". Whilst the history is entirely possible, we have no provenance. If it was genuine it would be worth thousands bt how to prove it?

Don't want to be too specific as I've mentioned it to people in real life but it's a (presumably quite rare) TV tie-in novelty - e.g. Ninja Mutant Ninja Turtles yo-yo.

Dinneronmybfpillow · 26/01/2023 19:39

DH and I saved for years for a campervan. We have said (with great regret) that we will sell it if things get tight. But I will feel very sad and angry if it comes to that.

GoldCherub · 26/01/2023 19:42

@MargaritaRita you and me both! 😆

I hadn’t thought of novelty collectibles. Could be all sorts in my loft or could just be tatty old toys.

In an absolute emergency I have expensive engagement and eternity rings. I would hate to sell them but they are there. They are insured for £14k they cost £12k together but possibly sell for £6k?

Ylvamoon · 26/01/2023 19:43

My grandparents had a stash of gold coins: Krugerrand, Australian Nuggets...
They were hidden in at the back of the cleaning cupboard.

I think that's the only way to have something worth cashing in. When times are tough, the pure gold price goes up.

Anything else- antiques, jewellery and other collectibles are just sentimental items.

GoldCherub · 26/01/2023 19:44

@CharlotteStreetW1 it must have some value even as an excellent copy of famous table.

DH is convinced his unopened 1997 Man Utd calendar is his pension!

BackT · 26/01/2023 19:46

Gold sovereigns worth around £600 at current prices.

The car I suppose?

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 26/01/2023 19:48

feliciabirthgiver · 26/01/2023 19:45

DH is convinced his unopened 1997 Man Utd calendar is his pension!

Imagine if he opened it and found, in error, the pages were for some obscure bottom-division club!

If he wants to sell it, 2025 would be a good year as the calendar will be the same as 1997 so it could be used.

MadeInChorley · 26/01/2023 19:50

My grandmother’s china dinner service and tea set. She left it to me because she knew I thought it was beautiful. I was in my teens and had no idea if value. It was in the attic for years until I eventually got a flat. Evidently other people think it’s as lovely as I do, because even odd saucers go for £££ when they come up on eBay. The tea pot went for 😯 amounts. It’s a super-trendy mid-century Scandi design. Modernist - no painted flowers and gold rims.

GoldCherub · 26/01/2023 19:50

Your DH has the same approach as me. But what if it is really valuable. Exciting.

The trouble with gold coins is that I don’t have any. But I do have a tiny glass that I believe in.

Resell prices for jewellery is so poor isn’t it.
