Have you got a back up item

I have three items that I always think will save the day. A piece of jewellery, an old phone and an antique glass.

I went to sell the jewellery and found out it’s worthless but I still have the other two.

DM has a clock that she is convinced is worth money if she needs it. She also had a signed first edition Harry Potter book that she put in the bootsale but that’s a whole other thread.

Here is tiny glass. It’s from c1900. I’m thinking £150 worth

Oh wow that poem has to be worth a chunk.

Another good time to sell items with a specific date on them is on significant anniversaries - e.g. list a 1997 calendar on eBay in 2027 as 'Unusual 30th Birthday Gift' .

Problem is I can't show it to any one as it's the only copy! I know it off by heart, but showing it to someone or having it on display is a total no

Findyourneutralspace · 26/01/2023 20:03

I’m divorced and have my wedding and engagement rings sitting in a drawer. It feels churlish to sell them but I would if I was desperate.

Yabado · 26/01/2023 20:11

if I killed DH he has about 15k worth of jewelry. watch ring braclet and necklace
but the resale value is crap maybe 3- 4k so I would rather keep it it’s insured for 15k

And when he was in hospital a few months ago the nurses did say if he died on the operating table they would swipe his 3 gold teeth 😂

I have a watch worth maybe 4k so I could possibly get 500 -700 maybe if someone really wanted it .

my dog paid 2.5 k
probably get 1k but he’s such a knob no one would take him or they would bring him back 😂

I prefer a stash of cash 😂😂

MiniTheMinx · 26/01/2023 20:21

I've collected antiques for 30 years, so yep quite a lot. DH would have us starve before he agreed to part with anything. It looks like a crazy museum here, but currently I'm a bit skint Grin

peaceandpotato · 26/01/2023 20:29

Not a lot unfortunately. I do have some £5 notes all in order from back when they were new. Probably worth £5.10

GoldCherub · 26/01/2023 20:30

@MiniTheMinx can you value my glass please?

We have a book worth up to £1000 but we can’t ever sell it as it’s controversial

Rowthe · 26/01/2023 20:38

Dont wanna say, cos I wouldn't want to get robbed

Giggorata · 26/01/2023 20:38

I suppose one of my hangs. They go for around £500 - £1000.

(For those unfamiliar with, these are those flying saucer shaped tuned hand instruments that we must never refer to as a drum)

WorriedMillie · 26/01/2023 20:38

I was pondering this the other day, I’ve got lots of (not huge value) items I could sell
Saddles for my pony, who died 8 years ago- I’m just keeping for sentimental reasons, jewellery, some quirky items that are quite collectible, my dad’s old pocket watch.
OH has some valuable, collectible comics that are apparently worth a fair bit

That is what they are for. Traditionally he took all your worldly possessions, and gave you a ring because your resale value was less.

MamaNell · 26/01/2023 20:53

I've got some money in cash at the back of a cupboard. A relic from when my ex husband would drain the bank account and if I wanted something put aside I had to hide it. An old habit I can't give up but gives me a sense of security

LucyWhipple · 26/01/2023 20:57

A lot of good antique furniture and some art. But it’s been in the family a long time so would have to be life or death stuff to part with it.

I don't know much about drinking glasses. My advice would be not to use an auction house, for many smalls you'll usually make more money on ebay! It's retail value is likely to be £150 but unless you sell it online you won't get anywhere near the retail value. I collect pewter, furniture, militaria and C18th porcelain. Although we have a house full of oddities such as georgian fleams and early vetinary tools. At the moment I have a hankering to buy antique glass eyeballs!

My only real expertise though is in furniture. Especially oak and country furniture.

GoldCherub · 26/01/2023 22:29

Thanks Mini. I now know what a fleam is. I suspect my glass is really worth £20 so not a lot of back up from that item.

GoldCherub · 26/01/2023 19:44

@CharlotteStreetW1 it must have some value even as an excellent copy of famous table.

There's the rub - it's not his usual style so even harder to prove but would add to the value.

Someone upthread reminded me though. I bought my car brand new four years ago when I drove to work. I now have a local job and walk to work and I hardly use it so with that and lockdowns, the mileage is comically low. With the second hand car market as it is, it's currently worth about three grand more than I paid for it - so that would get us out of a hole 😁

whereeverilaymycat · 27/01/2023 10:15

Sitting here weeping at a signed first edition Harry Potter going to the boot sale

GasPanic · 27/01/2023 11:12

If you've got an item then at least have it valued - it's not much of a backup item if it turns out to be worthless.

A lot of stuff that people think is valuable turns out to be worth a lot less.

Rings like engagement rings are not worth much more than scrap value.

GoldCherub · 27/01/2023 11:38

That’s interesting about car prices Charlotte mines 15 years old and was worth under £2k a couple of years ago but maybe that has gone up.

Completely jumping on this thread but I was wondering if you had seen anything like this before? We found it in our garden, house age approx 1860/1870.

GoldCherub · 27/01/2023 11:58

No idea what that is but I would give that a back up item comfort value of between £50-£3,000. As in things are tight but we still have the little whatsit found in the garden.
