Who fancies a No Spend Day thread (like MSE forum's) ?

I prefer MN to MSE but would like to do some NSDs in January. Anyone else interested in doing a support thread ? this is the idea

I have a shocking spending habit and i really, really need to curb it. So I am going to have a goal of 10 NSDs in January and aim to manage 3 in a row. That would be a massive achievement for me.

I'm still 1/ 15 but I WILL I WILL I WILL have a nsd tomorrow

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 08/01/2013 20:57

Nsd 5 here- took homemade soup to work. Tomorrow should be nsd 6 but Ill need a wee shop on Thursday.

hurricanewyn · 08/01/2013 20:57

Still on 3/10 here, but tomorrow should be a NSD. Broke till next week, so it should be easy Grin

oopsadaisymaisy · 08/01/2013 21:35

I m totally rubbish at this. I managed to spend nearly £20 today. Ran out of concealer and cotton wool, then saw eye shadow for £1 in the bargain bucket so bought that, I definitely didn't need eye shadow. Then ds decided he wanted back lunch rather than school lunch so bought him some lunch bits. I'm nearly out of foundation too. I cannot live life without it :)

ConfusedPixie · 08/01/2013 21:38

4/10 Grin I did spend, but they were from a pot of planned expenses that I'm not counting (climbing: £26 for 5 sessions and £1.50 parking for work today). I am spending much less on crap already I've noticed.

nkf · 08/01/2013 21:54

3 nsds so far.

androbbob · 08/01/2013 22:01

Another 4/10 here - no spend at all - planned not to spend! Took lunch to work, was raining at lunch so no inclination to go out. Meal planned upto Sunday and all food in fridge / freezer, although will need to get mince on Friday. Definately doing me good not spending and thinking about what I spend on. Also helped by the fact I am skint until payday and also need to find £70 to pay DD school holiday balance by 7th Feb!

I reckon I am 'saving' or not spending £3 to £5 a day, and that is not taking into account the £20 here and there in the supermarket. I am planning to try 12 NSD for Feb.

I understand what Miranda is saying, in that as its a spend day, then you wait until then to get the other things you need, but I think it is all in your mindset. I think we need to consider the MSE Martin Mantra:

If you are skint - Do you need it, Can I afford it, Have I checked if its cheaper elsewhere

If you are not skint - Will I use it, Is it worth it, Have I checked if its cheaper elsewhere

If any answer is NO then dont buy it!

Definately worth waiting a day to see if you really need to buy something - not the absolute essentials, but the make-up, clothes, etc!

shockers · 08/01/2013 22:38

Buffy, sorry, it's the Dryathlon suggested by Cancer Care UK, no alcohol through the month of January, but I'm going to carry on I think!

I took yesterday's left overs to work for lunch (chicken and veg stew) and it tasted even better second time round.

TinyDiamond · 08/01/2013 22:39

4/15 now Smile

silverfrog · 08/01/2013 22:44

No nsd here today. Mostly planned spend (dd1 needed a new flask for school lunches), and bought a few other bits but on vouchers so doesn't count. But then failed miserably and bought some bits in Lakeland - that shop is alwaysy downfall! Still, they were bargains which will save me money in the long run...

Have a parents coffee morning at dd1's school tomorrow, so will probably spend, and dentist again on Thursday so this week is not looking too good!

3/10

AViewfromtheFridge · 08/01/2013 23:12

5/15 here. I'm beginning to get a bit obsessive about it all though. It's a fine line between being careful and being tight!

ComradeJing · 09/01/2013 00:01

Still 2/15 here.

Total fail yesterday when I bought a book and a TV series on itunes without actually thinking about it. Didn't even realise I had spent money. Sad Hmm

Then in the evening we found TWO giant cockroaches in the house [boak]

ComradeJing · 09/01/2013 00:01

oh ffs Envy not [boak] Hmm

snozzlemaid · 09/01/2013 06:22

Another one for me yesterday. Thought it was going to be an expensive day as dp found a nail in a tyre. He took it to get repaired/replaced and it was only a short tack that had gone into thickest part of tyre so no nothing needed doing. They took it out and all's fine.
So very pleased we didn't have to buy a new tyre.
5/10

TheHappyCamper · 09/01/2013 07:23

I had a planned NSD yesterday so 4/10 for me. Took left over jacket spud to work and was very nice actually. DH is struggling more than me I think as he is at home with DD during the daytime and often 'pops' to LIDL - he's working on it.

Planned spend today on groceries.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 09/01/2013 08:29

I'm still on 3/10 and need to spend again today because we're out of milk.

Haven't spent much and only 50p was unreasonable but still think I can do better next week.

wools · 09/01/2013 08:36

4/10 for me. I will have to get petrol today so will aim for tomorrow as NSD.

hurricanewyn · 09/01/2013 09:24

NSD for me today - will be rooting around the fridge for lunch. Should be interesting, whatever I end up with. 4/10 here.

Living · 09/01/2013 09:53

Right still on 2/10. Yesterday was not a NSD (double negative in there) - was always going to be a spend day as had to do the weekly shop (although couldn't get everything we need so will have to be a top up). Also bought lunch out, went out for dinner and to the cinema so Blush.

Other thing I did though was to get out a wodge of cash and parcel it out into planned expenditure. I'm then not counting this. I think at the beginning of every month I will do a list of things I need to pay (eg nanny fees, nursery fees, swimming lessons) and count these all on one day.

Hope I don't get a [buscuit] for being on this thread and still paying swimming lessons!

Living · 09/01/2013 09:54

Oh you know I mean Biscuit

akaemmafrost · 09/01/2013 10:05

Can I join? I was doing this over Christmas anyway because its easier then. Loads of food and entertainment already in.

Can't start today as need to buy straws! Of all things. Believe it or not they are a necessity here, have 2 x dc with ASD who cannot bear the feel of liquids on their lips. So it will have to start tomorrow.

I'm quite excited actually I will start by aiming for three as I have to do my weekly shop on Sunday.

mum23girlys · 09/01/2013 10:20

Spent £12 yesterday on a top up aldi shop and toddler group. Also made £7 on a Facebook sale.

Today looks to be a nsd as dh doesn't get paid till tomorrow and fridge etc stocked. It's a good month though as amazingly I have £12 left Grin

So 4/12

lorisparkle · 09/01/2013 10:40

still going to be 5/15 we need diesal have got a 10p off per litre so that will cushion the blow.

ComradeJing · 09/01/2013 11:43

No Biscuit from me living. We're in a similar boat - DH earns well which makes our financial situation (debt and no savings) even more ridiculous.

I have a bill that's just come in so today went from being another NSD to a SD.

stormforce10 · 09/01/2013 12:30

Hi I've been doing NSDs but somehow not noticed this thread until now. Hope no one minds me joining so late.

I'm up to 5 NSDs so far and I'm aiming for a round dozen. I'm hoping to bring it up to 6 today so will be half way there.
