Who fancies a No Spend Day thread (like MSE forum's) ?

I prefer MN to MSE but would like to do some NSDs in January. Anyone else interested in doing a support thread ? this is the idea

I have a shocking spending habit and i really, really need to curb it. So I am going to have a goal of 10 NSDs in January and aim to manage 3 in a row. That would be a massive achievement for me.

I had my 3rd NSD on saturday but failed on Sunday. DH has spent £8 today on petrol and baking potatoes but I'll have to count that really as ours is a joint effort.

So 3/10. Hoping for another tomorrow.

Well done everyone. I love reading how well everyone is doing Smile

mum23girlys · 07/01/2013 19:29

Had hoped for a nsd today but ran out of baby wipes and toothpaste. I would've improvised with the wipes but needed toothpaste too.

Got playground tomorrow so will spend £1.50 there so stuck on 3/12 till at least wed

mum23girlys · 07/01/2013 19:30

**playgroup not playground Blush

I have spent the last few days failing spectacularly at this. Friday was a planned spending day but I ran out of time to get DD1's birthday cake so had to go and buy it on saturday before her party instead.

Sunday I took the dds to the beach and thought it was free to park where I did but luckily noticed the traffic warden just in time to buy a ticket. At least it was just the parking to pay for and not a fine for not paying.

Today I popped to marks and spencer to collect a belt I'd ordered for dd1 from the sale and bought myself some socks as well, which i really needed as all of mine have holes in, but still was spending.

Tomorrow I'll have to pay for DD2's pre-school, but I'm going to pay for the half-term to save me having to pay each week so that should help for the rest of the month.

So, I'm still 1/10 but aiming for a NSD on wednesday.

AViewfromtheFridge · 07/01/2013 19:44

Does it count if other people spend money on you?

If not, 4/15.

greensnail · 07/01/2013 19:57

I'm definitely not counting other people spending on me (otherwise I'd be failing even more spectacularly).

MirandaWest · 07/01/2013 20:12

Have managed three NSDs now. Today was small things (two books in a charity shop and two bottles of drink which really weren't necessary....).

Tomorrow I have planned spending which is better but still spending.

Bullets · 07/01/2013 21:48

NSD no. 3 for me today!

I lift share to work and paid my friend's petrol money at the weekend on a spending day.

Made my lunch and lots of snacks Sunday night to take with me so I could resist the canteen and vending machines. Settled down with my egg sandwich and a good book at 1pm feeling very smug...and the fire alarm went off, typical!

I am currently tucking into stewed out of date plums and ice cream, reliving my youth, cheaper than sending DH out for chocolate too Smile

theowlworrier · 07/01/2013 22:15

Yes! Finally managed my first NSD :) No coffees at work, no buying lunch at work!

FleeBee · 07/01/2013 22:26

I'm off to bed so today is my third NSD Grin 3/10

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 07/01/2013 23:01

A spend day today, but I went food shopping. I withdrew my food budget for the week, spent some but saved £10 for bread/milk during the week. I'm not going to count that £10 as and when I spend it, but if it goes on anything other than groceries, I will. Dinner money is paid for the week for DD too.

TinyDiamond · 07/01/2013 23:36

still on 3/15 but tomorrow definitely won't be one either. hopefully weds will

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree · 07/01/2013 23:44

Spend day for me too so I'm still on 1/10. I'm counting DDs. Home insurance came out today plus topped up oyster card but that's my tube fares sorted for the next 2 weeks.

Also bought my parent's a bottle of wine for looking after DD. DH is away and I have to do extra days at work so they've saved me 2 days childcare costs. They said no need to but given I've been fed there for 2 days, scavenged leftovers for my lunch and got a lie in yesterday I think they deserve it.

MrsShrek3 · 08/01/2013 00:17

well DS1 did want a pub lunch so as budgety as it was, a fiver a head Grin it was still a treat and a spend. So got home and did an online shop as I haven't any time in the week to go to supermarket. The last online shop I did was when dd was a baby - she's 7..... Today NSD packed lunch for work and dc to swimming lessons (we pay for the year by direct debit, do I take it that doesn't count?)
sigh. 4/15 and this is very focussing, thank you for the kick up the bum to start doing it :)

Living · 08/01/2013 07:15

Morning! NSD yesterday so now at 2/10. Weekly shop tonight and have to pay membership fees tomorrow so it won't have another NSD until Thursday. It's the planned expenditure that's causing me problems! Will buy cinema tickets for Thursday today so that Thursday can be a NSD.

Thinking that next month I may count all planned expenditure as being on the day I take the cash out at the beginning of the month (nothing is on direct debits in this country) - otherwise I'm getting nowhere (unless I get DH to hand the money over, which feels like cheating!).

MadameCastafiore · 08/01/2013 07:28

Bloody hell, I'm trying to do this and forgot when I bought new copy of shred (mine keeps jumping) and DH the first Jack Reacher book (he went to see film and loved it so thought would be nice treat!). Fuck and filled car up with petrol!

Today though I am only buying a loaf of bread!

This is bloody hard not spending isn't it!

missbennett · 08/01/2013 12:13

Had to spend over the weekend but kept it to the minimum - approx £10 on birthday bits for DD (already had main present), petrol for run on Sunday, groceries on Sunday (which included cake for DD and flowers for friends I was visiting), total of £16!! Decided that I will not count train fare as a spend, as I have it in my 'fares' pot for the week, but if I use the car and have to pay to park, I will count that as a spend. So, yesterday was NSD 2. Today I have had to buy bread, milk and stamps, and also got the biscuits for the group I'm running tomorrow so hopefully tomorrow will be NSD, today being planned. I will get there eventually Smile. Total is 2/12 I think.

OnTheBottomWithAStringOfTinsel · 08/01/2013 12:19

Well I only spent ?5 yesterday (train fares for DD going back to school).

However today was an epic fail (far more so that I had anticipated - needed 4 new tyres - ?250, eek!).

At least though the tyres are now safe, we typically get our worst weather in Jan and Feb so I'm prepared.

I then decided to go the whole hog and did the grocery shop as well (?50), if today is going to be a spendy day, I want it over for the rest of the week. I might even get 2 weeks out of the shopping and a few cupboard meals, here's hoping.

lorisparkle · 08/01/2013 12:57

well still on 5/15 but today was planned - online shop, toddlers and some sewing stuff. was very good and cycled to the next village for baby and toddlers.

I use the tesco pay delivery in advance for online shops. it makes it so much more cosy effective for me and means I am only paying about a pound for delivery.

MirandaWest · 08/01/2013 13:03

I think that my problem with this is that there are some things you do need to buy but then you've spent already so if you're me you feel like you might as well keep spending IYSWIM. I was good today though and only bought the things on my list rather than random reduced Christmas stuff in paperchase and bubble bath in boots.

I think I'm going to try and think harder about whether I need to buy things or not whether or not it is a NSD. I can see the temptation of spending money on a different day s you can say you've had a NSD but you're still spending the same amount of money overall.

bigkidsdidit · 08/01/2013 15:58

I do that Miranda

Today I had to get DS's birthday present and card so I thought ah well, it's a spend day, and did a little top up shop that I could probably have done without

Still 5/15

PolkadotCircus · 08/01/2013 17:05

Day 4/10. Yesterday was food day and not under £100 for 5 for a week so not happy but did well today.Having my hair cut tomorrow, can't put it off any longer or I'll start scaring people. Thursday I'm having coffee with a friend,1st after the hols but Friday and Sunday will hopefully clock up another 2.

shockers · 08/01/2013 17:24

Can I join in? I've had about 4 days already where I haven't spent (including today), so I'm hitting the ground running.

I've started meal planning for January and I'm doing the dryathon thing, so I have the potential to pay off some of my vast overdraft save loads.

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree · 08/01/2013 17:50

Welcome shockers. What's the dryathon thing?

Today was meant to be a NSD but I found out this morning the cats have no food left so had to buy them some. Then saw discounted tupperware so bought too. It is for taking in my own lunches so a good investment WinkI didn't buy the heavily discounted selection box. Took every ounce of willpower Grin

Still in 1/10. I'm dreadful at this Hmm

MrsShrek3 · 08/01/2013 19:09

made packed lunch and left the house without it Sad so had to buy lunch. still 4/15 definite NSD tomorrow (and no need to make lunch as it's already done Wink )
