Can someone explain to me New Zealand?

Sorry for the ignorance/naivety here but can someone explain to me the reasonings behind such extreme lockdown measures in NZ? At the beginning of the pandemic they're approach was fully accepted but surely now with vaccines and omnicrom being a 'milder' form of covid they have to start setting sense? Is it about the health system? I understand there's a severe lack of ICU beds but is locking down so much really better for health? Can anyone explain it to me please?

Like omicron is at worst a few days in bed / an odd sniffle in 95% of people vaxxed or not . The odd person gets a bad dose with omicron. No one im seeing has died or have got Long Covid . Delta was a totally different kettle of fish with some terribly affected and a smallminority still are
Is the NZ public frightened out of their wits by the spectre of omicron???
To me thats a massive falsehood to be peddling to the public / the risk of long covid with omicron is miniscule too by alll accounts. Her high public support might be down to peddling hysteria . She is just terrible if thats even 20% correct

Justanotherkiwi · 30/01/2022 22:21

@PinkTonic yes second boosters are well underway. Certainly those in their 40's and below have been receiving them

Radyward · 30/01/2022 22:22

So sorry @pinkTonic - so hard to shoulder all that your poor Father went through so far away from his own home

SquirrelG · 30/01/2022 22:24

What are you on? I'm a New Zealander you absolute muppet.

I don't believe there was anything in my post regarding people overseas not having a clue which was specifically addressed to you!!!! Are you incapable of understanding general remarks? Or are you just so full of your own importance that you think every post on this thread is about you?

@Tealightsandd - thanks for your nice comments

As for all the "Jacinda this, Jacinda that" on these threads - do you really think every decision is made soley by her?

Justanotherkiwi · 30/01/2022 22:29

@SquirrelG what's that squirrel? Thought you had more important things to do than comment on this thread. You seem to keep coming back to bite. Go get your suntan now darling.

Yeah so mild. That will explain the 300-400 deaths a day in the UK (plus the many more disabled).

If people in NZ are frightened, that means they have common sense. It's a valid fear - to be frightened of a still new and evolving disease that kills and disables many.

Tealightsandd · 30/01/2022 22:30

Squirrel has as much right as anyone else to post here.

Justanotherkiwi · 30/01/2022 22:32

@Tealightsandd you seem to be their little buddy on this thread. I'm sure squirrel can stand up for themselves without your help.

Justanotherkiwi · 30/01/2022 22:32

@Tealightsandd squirrel told us they don't have time for this thread.

Justanotherkiwi · 30/01/2022 22:33

@Tealightsandd and yesterday you said the same thing.....

Tealightsandd · 30/01/2022 22:34

I saw a beautiful photograph earlier. Two red squirrels 🐿️. (I like the grey ones too).

Justanotherkiwi · 30/01/2022 22:35

@Tealightsandd weird deflection

Quartz2208 · 30/01/2022 22:38

We haven't actually had over 300 deaths a day (in terms of date of death not reported) since February 2021. Reported deaths isnt the same as it varies widely

I had a lovely Saturday evening Smile.

Now scrolling through here with my Sunday night hot chocolate, but you'll be pleased to know that I'm heading off to bed very soon.

Have a good night.

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/deaths

(Note the 85 dead today is lower as the weekend always has a lag in reporting).

In just one week (last week) 1,557 people were killed by Covid.

A whopping 176,813 UK dead in total so far.

MapleMay11 · 30/01/2022 22:44

Is that correct - this info below seems to suggest uptake of the first booster is very low and there's no mention of a second booster:

Yes we are on around 250 deaths a day on average at the moment - a sad and tragic amount but it isnt the 300 to 400 deaths a day you pronounced earlier.

As you rightly say there are reporting lags which means reported data can vary widely (and does indeed hit 400+) but that doesnt mean we are having that number each day.

PinkTonic · 30/01/2022 22:48

Yes I don’t think they’re doing second boosters.

Justanotherkiwi · 30/01/2022 22:48

@MapleMay11 I was thinking more so from the 'on offer' point of view. I wonder if the past two weeks that more boosters have been taken up since the article was written? The overall vaccination approach in nz has been slow.

Justanotherkiwi · 30/01/2022 22:49

@PinkTonic they are, as my family have had the boosters and they live in different parts of the country (3rd vaccine)

Sundayvibes · 30/01/2022 22:51

The ONS have realised stats for covid deaths in the uk.
17,500 died ‘ of ‘ covid
The others died ‘ with ‘ covid. Within 28 days of a positive test

Justanotherkiwi · 30/01/2022 22:51

@PinkTonic sorry I realise you are talking 4th shot now

Yes I think the earlier question related to second boosters, so four doses. Now that’s not been deemed necessary here in the UK yet but we have high natural immunity at this point, however the protection against infection wanes relatively quickly and I have heard the idea mooted. I think Israel are doing them.

PinkTonic · 30/01/2022 22:54

Cross post @Justanotherkiwi
