No masks/self isolation to end in the near future etc

I fully understand that restrictions can't go on forever but I admit I'm a bit nervous. I'm considering pausing my immunosuppressant drugs for a while, until case numbers decrease (they're still over 2k per 100k here). There's a teacher in my household whose school currently has six teachers and countless students off with covid but no masks from tomorrow! Plus DH will have to go back to the office on crowded public transport.

I'll phone my consultant tomorrow, see what she says. I was advised to pause when Omicron cases were going through the roof here. I'm worried about what the lack of meds is doing to my body though (I have an autoimmune condition).

How's everyone else feeling?

@Blossom64265 Please think about how you phrase things. I understand why you're so worried, but I am "some infirm person lying in a bed all day" for the most part, and I still don't want to get any sicker, or have what I do enjoy / am able to do any further reduced.

NormaLouiseBates · 19/01/2022 14:52

I'm scared for my frail and vulnerable (not officially CEV I don't think) 81 year old Mum who is in a nursing home. I'll continue to do everything I can to avoid getting it because of her and not being able to see her but I'm concerned at what impact these new rules will have on the home and what they're going to do going forward. At the moment, to be able to visit her, I have to have a weekly PCR and a LFT on the day of every visit.

@ThievesTemple

He’s a disgrace, not even through winter, hospitals still struggling but to save his own ass, he’ll throw the health of the country under the bus.
He's a fucking twat. He's announced this today so every poor fucker who was complaining yesterday that they had to bury their parent alone, or that their dad died alone while this utter piece of shit carried on doing exactly what he wanted, will forget what he's done because you don't have to wear a mask anymore.

He's a despicable lying sociopath. He hates you, he hates me. He hates the sick, the poor and the vulnerable. He will do anything, to anybody, to cover his own abhorrent arse.

thing47 · 19/01/2022 14:55

@SmashingBIouse

Thing is if you're immunosuppressed you don't get a good response from vaccines, so although I'm soon to be quadruple vaccinated I'm not sure how protected I actually am. Not enough to feel confident going to a gig, say (unfortunately Sad).
DH (CEV) is in the same boat, really missing live music. His consultant told him he has reasonable level of antibodies from his 3 jabs, could you find out from yours/healthcare team whether you do? It certainly helped him be a little bit more relaxed Flowers
Grantanow · 19/01/2022 14:55

It's simply a populist move to try to save his own skin. What happens when a new variant arrives from the largely unvaccinated 3rd world? What about the struggling NHS and cancelled operations and cancer treatments? Thank you, David Davies for telling him to go.

Allotment123 · 19/01/2022 14:58

If you immuno suppressed and have children 5-11 in your household, from next week GPS's will start vaccinating them, saw it on twitter and confirmed it with our local surgery

ChrimboGateauxCatto · 19/01/2022 15:05

Hello my people! CEV here. Double jab plus booster. We are still shielding and both wfh. Have left this house once since March two years ago.

I can't put into words how scary all of this has been. And how let down I feel by Boris and Co.

We will prob be super safe and cautious until covid Is endemic with v low numbers. (love that politicians think they can decide when that is)

ChrimboGateauxCatto · 19/01/2022 15:07

@PAFMO I think I love you. Here here!

We cant stay in restrictions forever. He's done the right thing.
MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 19/01/2022 15:10

I saw this, and my heart sank. I don't see why masks can't be mandated until spring, even if they drop anything else. (I don't think that's been confirmed either way, mind you).

I panic-bought some FFP3 masks, as I really miss normal things like shopping centres. I've promised DD we'll go shopping this summer - when cases will hopefully have dropped. I haven't been in a shopping centre since Feb 2020.

I really miss things like the theatre and cinema too.

Sorry, drifting off topic, but reports like this remind me just how far we're being left behind.

Siuan · 19/01/2022 15:23

@picklemewalnuts

Thank you to those explaining their vulnerabilities to this specific situation. DH is somewhat dismissive of people's vulnerability. It helps to be able to give him examples/explanations as to why it matters.
You would not imagine I was "ill" if you saw me. I look fit and well, I go to the gym, walk and live a normal life. Some infections are risky and I easily get chest infections. I am one of those who people will say " Oh, but she had underlying health conditions" I have a heart condition, asthma, bronciectasis and Rheumatoid arthritis, all of which are completely controlled by drugs.

The problem is that some of the drugs for RA, in particular steroids, mean the vaccine doesn't really work as well.
I was very ill with covid though not ventilated.

Guineapigssweak · 19/01/2022 15:29

Instead of spending stupid money on the NHS Track and Trace app he should have ploughed that into the NHS instead. Funny how the NHS was underfunded then all of a sudden Boris finds Billions hanging around!!

Alayalaya · 19/01/2022 15:30

Very upset. He’s doing this in an attempt to curry favour and save himself. Other people are incredibly selfish so they won’t wear masks and distance unless the government says they have to. He has basically thrown anyone with a health issue (and their families) under the bus.

It would have been cheaper for them to have used local authorities for track and trace instead of handing it over to consultancies.

Local authorities have better contacts with the local population (such as via schools, council tax and other local services.

And anyone who works in the NHS or needs NHS services also under that bus.
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/01/2022 15:37

What @PAFMO said but I hope that's true @Allotment123.

There's a difference between being CEV (and vaccinated) and CEV, immunosuppressed and having no antibodies despite vaccination.
I'm in that second group and my treatment isn't something I can stop.

At least self isolation isn't going next week.

Egghead68 · 19/01/2022 15:39

Scared. Luckily, for the moment at least, my workplace continues to insist on negative lateral flow tests to enter the building and at least surgical masks inside. I won’t be able to get there on public transport though.

^^ word for word!!

It's not like rates are LOW, they're just possibly a smudge lower than skyscraper.

Wish we could pass over all our various 'underlyings' to them, then see what they think!!

5 days isolation was bad enough, there's just no need to get rid of other measures yet. Local hospital cannot admit anyone else for anything, all being diverted to other hospitals who are getting to that stage too!!

Not a consideration when you're MoP.

Wankers.

Agreed. I cannot believe how many actually buy into this when the reality (& motivators) are so so transparent. Maddening and sickening .
Alayalaya · 19/01/2022 15:45

‘ I look fit and well, I go to the gym, walk and live a normal life’
Me too. But I had a car accident as a teenager that resulted in a ruptured spleen and I had part of my spleen removed. Since the spleen is part of your immune system, that means I have weak immunity. I’m perfectly healthy and it doesn’t affect my life at all. But Covid would kill me.

plus3 · 19/01/2022 15:45

I am part of the CEV group. I have been vaccinated & booster and back at work since April. My DC are at school, so I essentially stopped shielding then.
I will have another booster if offered, masks are compulsory at work (intensive care unit) and keep going.
I am not cleared to look after covid positive patients and my team support me to ensure I don’t have to.
Shielding was psychologically so difficult for me - I absolutely do not want to return to it.
I take immunosuppressants for IBD. You would not consider me vulnerable or weak or worthless if you saw me.

plus3 · 19/01/2022 15:48

That said, I do think this is happening to save Boris’s arse. Wanker.

RachC2021 · 19/01/2022 15:54

I was flagged as CEV and further flagged as qualifying for a third primary dose.

Whilst I’ve had my third primary dose, thanks to how they fucked up the rollout of the third primary dose, I don’t actually qualify for a booster yet. I’m not 91 days yet. I know I’m not the only one. To completely ignore CEV and furthermore those who need a third primary jab is appalling. Where is our advice in this? The USA is supplying N95 masks to the population at large for their protection — why can’t our government supply the same for third primary people at the very least? (Ideally all CEV.)

Mickarooni · 19/01/2022 16:00

I think it’s the right thing for wider society. Although I’m immunocompromised, I feel reassured by having access to antivirals and anecdotal reports from people with my condition coping well at home with this variant.

Franklin12 · 19/01/2022 16:04

its the right decision. We cannot keep throwing companies and our children under the bus because we want to keep dragging this on and on.
