People really have had enough haven’t they?

I was in my local newsagent this morning and it was me, two women behind the counter and 7 other shoppers.

5 of us were quite huddled together whilst waiting to pay, so we were very close to the staff members behind the till too, and the other two people were still shopping.

Of the ten of us in the shop, which is quite a small newsagents I was the only one wearing a mask and nobody was even bothered that nobody else was. I mean, the shop assistants aren’t going to make an issue of it seeing as they don’t wear masks either.

I felt like such an idiot as I stood there wearing one.

I’m not threatened by Covid, I would love for things to go back to being mask-free, I only wear one because guidance says to rather than because I want to, but I was just so surprised that nobody else was wearing one too.

I felt so uncomfortable wearing one and I think if my hands weren’t full of food and things I probably would have taken mine off because I just felt silly.

It really has made me think that people have just had enough haven’t they?

Personally I think that, for the majority of people, mask wearing is a small thing that ALLOWS US to otherwise carry on as normal

@HesterShaw1

I'm so glad people are finally seeing sense
As in most people are keeping their distance and still wearing masks.

Yes!

@TheKeatingFive

It is about protecting society from having too many people all unwell (or dying) all at the same time.

It was about protecting health systems. But yet again, that's fairly unprecedented. There's never been much onus on people to live healthier lifestyles to avoid type 2 diabetes, which prior to covid put the most pressure on our health service.

Yes. Still waiting for meaningful action from the government and from individuals to encourage healthier diets and lifestyles.

What's with the block capitals?

And what evidence do you have that mask wearing is so effective against Omicron? Not saying they are entirely ineffective, but given how contagious Omicron is, it would seem doubtful that we can live 'as normal' simply by wearing a piece of cotton over our faces.

@TheKeatingFive

Without public health measures against coronavirus spread EVERYONE, young or old, would be affected because out systems would be overwhelmed.

I don't think this is entirely true actually.

There are many people who have little need for hospitals/health services generally. Plenty of people haven't accessed health services for years. An overwhelmed health system would not affect everyone equally.

Am curious,

Do you ever comment in an informed way?

Have been following your responses in this thread and I have come to the conclusion that you are 100% scientifically illiterate.

Every answer you give is wrong. Literally every single one.

Stop responding based on emotion (common problem for you and others on here).

What people like you fail to understand again and again.

Less restrictions = more infections

more infections = more mutations in virus

Do you want another wave due to a more highly mutated virus that evades all the current vaccines?

Because that is exactly what you will get "if you go back to normal" and let the virus keep replicating at a high level.

So my (expert) comment: wear your damn mask and sit down.

Stop spreading this disinformation around because you literally have no idea as to what you are talking about. Its astonishing really.

I'm not sure masks are that effective either, especially the cloth or basic surgical ones. Omicron is very very transmissible.

The whole post feels ironic given the emotion and content. But why expert? And what does sit down mean..

Well the virus isn’t ever going away. So do you think we should never go back to normal? Or only when it’s signed a contract saying it won’t infect anybody ever again or something?

We have vaccines, we’ve done what we can, we can’t keep the population locked up and socially distanced until the end of time, sorry if you’d prefer that but it’s never going to happen.

I actually do wear my mask, so calm the fuck down thx. You sound like someone actually driven demented by fear. I'm sorry that the pandemic has done this to you.

But what precisely is factually wrong with the comment you quoted?

Plenty of people haven't accessed health services for years. An overwhelmed health system would not affect everyone equally.

This person's posts seem to be mostly concerned with insulting others because they don't share the poster's self-proclaimed 'expertise'. This despite the fact that she's a mere actuary, with no background in virology or epidemiology whatsoever. Very odd behaviour. I certainly wouldn't hire an actuary who takes things so very personally, and, yes, emotionally.

"Sit down" is a trite Americanism. Maybe that's the magical mystery Omicron-free land the poster nerrily jetted off to, while insisting others remain seated.

People can get very upset when others don't share their faith based views about restrictions reducing Omicron infections.

What are people going to do when they don't get to call others 'selfish' for doing perfectly normal human activities anymore?
VikingOnTheFridge · 12/01/2022 15:21

Harass people parking in disabled spaces maybe?

MaxNormal · 12/01/2022 15:30

Get into arguments about dogshit on their community facebook page. But oh the sense of loss, knowing that their grand moment in life has passed.

Amazing how, going into year three of this, people still cling to the effectiveness of masks. Like any other advert, people have seemed to ignore the fine print. Yes, in ideal controlled laboratory conditions, certain masks are highly effective. In real world applied conditions, not so much.

Ha ha at these comments

I’m sure David Spiegelhalter was talking about importance of standing up this morning on More or Less

2X4B523P · 12/01/2022 17:38

What about lying down, will that help?

PartyOnKale · 12/01/2022 17:42

I certainly qualify as an expert in sitting down.
