People really have had enough haven’t they?

I was in my local newsagent this morning and it was me, two women behind the counter and 7 other shoppers.

5 of us were quite huddled together whilst waiting to pay, so we were very close to the staff members behind the till too, and the other two people were still shopping.

Of the ten of us in the shop, which is quite a small newsagents I was the only one wearing a mask and nobody was even bothered that nobody else was. I mean, the shop assistants aren’t going to make an issue of it seeing as they don’t wear masks either.

I felt like such an idiot as I stood there wearing one.

I’m not threatened by Covid, I would love for things to go back to being mask-free, I only wear one because guidance says to rather than because I want to, but I was just so surprised that nobody else was wearing one too.

I felt so uncomfortable wearing one and I think if my hands weren’t full of food and things I probably would have taken mine off because I just felt silly.

It really has made me think that people have just had enough haven’t they?

I didn’t wear a mask on the tram yesterday. It was 40 degrees (I’m in Australia). The tram had air con but it was struggling. I don’t cope well with hot weather and I’m boosted so decided it was worse for my health to wear a mask and risk passing out from the heat than to risk getting Covid. Was it selfish? Yes probably but I’m just exhausted of the whole protecting everyone else mindset. I just want my life back.

@Chloemol

I have had enough of people not doing as asked and not taking personal responsibility

Just because you can still go to a nightclub doesn’t mean you absolutely have to, then take covid home with you

And I have had enough of people saying it’s mild, it’s like a cold, no it’s bloody not, it’s horrific and you feel ill for days

Frankly some of us need to give our heads a wobble. You felt ill for days? So What!

Getting bugs and feeling a bit crap for a few days was always (until recently) considered normal. I'd love to go the rest of my life and never get another cold. Does that mean we should have no personal interaction forever, just to save me from having a few days of coughing and spluttering every now and again?

ihearttc · 12/01/2022 07:47

I only wear a mask because I have to. Absolutely complied at the height of the pandemic but now it feels a little pointless. I’m a TA and we don’t wear them in class (which I’m very glad about as it’s hard teaching 6 year old wearing a mask) yet we have to wear them in corridors…like Covid knows to not step over the threshold of the classroom. So it’s ok to be maskless around 30 kids all day get not ok to be maskless in a supermarket??

HailAdrian · 12/01/2022 08:06

It wasn't even as bad as a cold for me tbh.

Kokeshi123 · 12/01/2022 08:21

Three people with Delta (not even as mild as Omicron) at my husband's company. One has an ordinary cold. Two have no symptoms at all. I'm sorry PP is feeling crap, but everyone's experience is different, and only a minority are getting seriously ill.

* And I have had enough of people saying it’s mild, it’s like a cold, no it’s bloody not, it’s horrific and you feel ill for days*

“I’ll for days”

Boo hoo

I was with norovirus
I didn’t expect the world to come to a standstill though

My unvaccinated, overweight and over 40 brother had a sore throat and runny nose for 2 days. Don't confuse your experience with how it is for everyone.

Norovirus put my mum in hospital for weeks in 2018.

Previous to that, in 2016, she had viral meningitis - also in hospital for weeks.

My brother was nearly hospitalised with measles.

I was floored by a normal cold twice in the autumn.

News Flash - Covid is not the only virus, there are far, far worse out there.

How do you know it's delta?

I find this “it’s all very mild” thing bizarre. We had omicron over Christmas and were all very ill, as have been a lot of people I know. I have lupus so expected it but no one else in the family has underlying health conditions or is in a dangerous category. It was like terrible flu and knocked my otherwise healthy husband out for over two weeks, he couldn’t go back to work after the Christmas break. All boosted. I ended up in hospital and whilst I have underlying issues, they’re not in my lungs or immune system so it was a shock.

It also worries me that we are all going cavalier because omicron is “mild” but what if the next variant is not mild or, God forbid, worse than what we’ve known so far? I feel like the government acting like we’ve “won” over Covid- like it’s The Hun- is very short-sighted.

placemats · 12/01/2022 10:03

I will continue to wear a mask and social distance. It will end eventually, but we still need to exercise caution.

My cousin got Delta last October and was very ill. She does have asthma and was double boosted. There was a cautious return back to work and she did go in on a few days and boom got the virus. She believes she would have died if she hadn't been vaccinated and still struggles at times for breath. Her doctor was fantastic and continue to monitor her. She's back working from home.

I said to her perhaps it might be better for me to get Omicron variant because it's less mild and she replied that it's really not worth the risk of what might happen post virus.

We are going on holiday together mainly for visiting relatives (my mum) because she wants to see people again. She is taking the virus very seriously, a person who was fed up with the restrictions and quickly has changed her mind because she was so ill with it.

It's not a restriction to my life to keep to what is very basic measures.

placemats · 12/01/2022 10:06

Sorry double vaccinated. She is getting her booster this month on advice from her doctor.

Again

Sympathy for you

But boo hoo!!!!

You were ill with something like flu. No mention of hospital and no mention of death! You and everyone got over it.

So as I say, sympathy but sore as hell doesn’t warrant lockdown or indeed any kind of restrictions including mask wearing

Blubells · 12/01/2022 10:11

We'll worry about that if and when it happens. Hopefully it won't as viruses often become milder, and hopefully our immunity will still help us.

But in the meantime we've got to get on and live our lives! In my opinion anyway Smile

VikingOnTheFridge · 12/01/2022 10:16

How would us having unnecessarily strict rules now, with all the damage that would come from that, be of any use in the event of more dangerous variants?

LadyCleathStuart · 12/01/2022 11:17

We can't live on 'what if'

'what if' there is an ebola pandemic

'what if' bird flu starts spreading from person to person

'what if' another new virus appears

Shall we just all stay home forever 'just in case?'

frazzledali · 12/01/2022 11:23

@Whatayear81she literally says she was in hospital in the post, so if we didn't know your comprehension skills were lacking beforehand then we certainly do now.

well, no, but if there is an Ebola pandemic I might stay home.

What's your point here? It doesn't make any sense.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/01/2022 11:31

I’m over it- I’ll wear a mask where required to but you will never lock me down again, I will not limit who I see ever again! If shops shut- I’ll have no choice. If schools shut- I’ll go get any keyworker job I can find, or better yet just lie and say I’m a keyworker! I won’t get any further jabs.
If you die you die/ it’s enough now! And China can pay for the spiralling costs of this pandemic!

jgw1 · 12/01/2022 11:34

I think the posts on this page neatly demonstrate why we have the government we have and frankly we probably deserve it.

It is all about ME.

WouldBeGood · 12/01/2022 11:37

That faith in the goodness and altruism of government is touching @jgw1

VikingOnTheFridge · 12/01/2022 11:43

Are we deluding ourselves that people who are against further restrictions are somehow the only self interested ones again? It must be at least 24 hours since the last time we went through that one.

Blubells · 12/01/2022 11:43

What's your point here? It doesn't make any sense.

I think the point was being made that currently things are looking increasingly positive, and that there's no point worrying about a hypothetical tragedy happening in the future!
