Why isn’t London in a local lockdown or having different restrictions to other areas?
Last year some areas of country were under special measures for ages eg Bolton and Leicester
Why is it different now for London?
Regional prejudice and injustice as usual

Preferably Grin. 1/3 of my development is second homes and most of the owners are londoners - I'm expecting the range rovers and other assorted Chelsea tractors to start rolling in around mid afternoon, more around 10pm then final batch tomorrow. Last year hundreds turned up in the middle of the night the Saturday Boris made the evening announcement 19th December causing congestion on the narrow streets [/quote]
Grin

Sorry I posted when I was tired and grumpy Grin. It's all very well to say put in restrictions but many people won't listen and will drive where they want to anyway. I do understand the mass exodus. I was in Wales for the mass incoming from the rest of the UK in August!

People love to hate London don’t they!! London was locked down last year, no favouritism. There is no where locked down at the moment. London is so transient not really worth shutdown now.

Most people are home for Christmas or wfh

Xenia · 23/12/2021 11:05

Easter 2020 was stolen from us and Christmas 2020 here in London. Our family summer holiday for 10 was cancelled 2 weeks before we end for 2020 and 2021. I won't be booking a 2022 one. Al we have left is Christmas 2021. My daughter Marhc 2020 was cancelled as London banned all weddings even with no meal and on guests unless you were dying from Dec 2020 to April 2021 (when she did manage to marry with 13 distanced guess and no meal in church).

I have been against the lockdowns since March 2020 and I think i t would be very wrong for London to lockdown for Christmas 2021 (and also New Year). We need to live with Covid and let people take their own choices. We have spent 2 years putting the old before the young and it was the wrong decision here and across most of the world. What is life without liberty?

Glad to hear. It is a treat for us as we live in South Wales. We will be visiting via Cambridge.

Oh dear OP Is that chip weighing heavy? Because if we are privileged then it doesn’t bloody feel like it.

Three times now London has been left at the front of the wave with the government taking action too little too late . By June 2020 1.5m Londoners had had Covid with all that implied in pressure in hospitals and the long term complications of long Covid. My family had it in the first week of March 2020. Then as alpha took hold the government was keeping schools open against their will and allowing the hoards to flood into the west end until infections became scary and they again imposed restrictions too little too late. This year everyone has learnt their lesson and London is largely shutdown already just as it was last Christmas. I drove around the South Circular last night at 7 and 10 and everywhere was practically empty and many restaurants had shut up shop. A lot of restaurants and other entertainment and hospitality venues won’t reopen until 3/4 January, giving them certainty where the government gives none, with all that means in terms of people’s livelihoods . Trains are being cut, deliveries are not arriving. As someone said, we are on the Titanic, we can see the iceberg but there is no Captain or crew. Like the canary in the coal mine once again they are waiting to see if we start to expire before they do anything. Apparently when hospitalisation are up to 400 they will jump but our local hospital has already declared a major incident, much needed treatment is again delayed.

We are just holding our breath as to whether our DC can avoid isolation whilst living somewhere that infections are up to over 5k per 100,000 in their age group so we can spend Christmas together but many young people will spend it alone.

And as you might get from my user name I am a northerner and fully appreciate that the North has been shafted by the government but also that London has too.

And how blaming “London” as some mythical place where the spoilt elite live lives of luxury and “don’t know the half of it” even when talking to someone who lives there who they know lives no such life is a bit of a chippy regional pastime…….

ChristmasWithBellsOn · 23/12/2021 13:25

Things we now have to argue about that didn't exist in 2019... The number, date, geography and severity of lockdown restrictions.

It's like some sort of Mandela Effect.

dundydee · 23/12/2021 13:26

I thought the whole country was in the same situation as London at Christmas last year.

No

DaisyNGO · 23/12/2021 13:57

@dundydee

I thought the whole country was in the same situation as London at Christmas last year.

No

So there was a place where hospitality was open?

I have a complete memory hole for the last 22 months.

In London and SE last Christmas you couldn’t mix at all. Whereas I believe the rest of the country you could have restricted indoor mixing between households?

Hospitality rules were the same everywhere as far as I remember.

Fashionista1995 · 23/12/2021 15:11

We had one day of allowed mixing (Christmas Day) vs from March 2020 to April/May 2021 bar a 3 week break in July. And Leicester didn’t even have that!

Biscuit

Local lockdowns don't work.

Regional prejudice as usual!

Xenia · 23/12/2021 15:14

The North along with London was locked down last Christmas and the North (where I am from but I now live in London) had even more lock downs during 2020 than London. London had a complete ban on all weddings even with no guests from Dec 2020 to April 2021 (unless the couple were dying).

dundydee · 23/12/2021 19:46

@DaisyNGO The whole country didn't have the restrictions on xmas day that London & other parts did.

Dghgcotcitc · 23/12/2021 21:19

I think Cornwall had open hospitality it was like the only place in tier two or one as I recall, someone from the area will be able to say, there were not a lot of places not in at lest tier three though! (But only tier four had a ban on household mixing in Christmas Day).
