Most likely scenario is a 2 week circuit breaker on the 28th, which gives enough time to recall parliament.

So, if you wish, you can Christmas away with your loved ones to your heart's content.

It’s not just the media reporting stuff that isn’t there though. Hasn’t Sage specifically called for pre-Christmas restrictions in their documents that get released, so not just “sources say”?

True

Although wondering what desk is with Johnson announcement as pp. hopefully not much

MumbleCrumbs · 20/12/2021 16:57

@TheCloudsHavePassed

Now saying in sky Boris is set to make an announcement shortly
Not seeing anything about this?

DD works over Christmas and New Year. In "normal" times when she is on that shift we celebrate "Christmas" the 1st weekend after New Year which is what we were hoping for this time. If restrictions go ahead, then who knows when we will be able to have any kind of family celebration. She lives too far away to just pop-in for a few hours. As for me hoping that my place of work would be closed....I''m a community care worker so the chances of that are zero.

@TrufflesAndToast

I’m amazed so many people actually intend changing their plans if restrictions are announced. Really didn’t think people would travel home a day or two earlier, for example, because Boris told them too. Surely by this point intelligent people are making their own judgements and if they believe restrictions are needed and should be abided by, why aren’t they just staying at home for the whole Christmas period?! You’re no less likely to catch covid on 27th compared to 28th.

Whatever side of the fence you come down on I’m just genuinely surprised that there is anyone left who bases their decisions on what our evil and incompetent (that’s being kind) government tell us to do on any given day. I no longer recognise them as having any authority over me and I will make my own risk assessment. That may mean at times doing more than I’m ‘allowed’ and at times less. Boris can go and fuck himself as far as I’m concerned and can take his guidelines with him!

We intend to travel to my parents’ on the 22nd. Staying for around a week. If mixing restrictions are imposed to start while we are there we won’t be going home early. What’s the point if we have all already been mixing for five/six days? We will have infected each other by then anyway!
TheCloudsHavePassed · 20/12/2021 17:00

Oh fab. Try again

They're not going to impose new restrictions today
Fishlipandtoeface · 20/12/2021 17:00

@MyrtlethePurpleTurtle I have compassion which is exactly why it shouldn’t be a competition over who is in the most misery.

Thanks!
Fishlipandtoeface · 20/12/2021 17:01

I.e I can say I worked in ITU voluntarily so none of you can moan about anything. Yeah what a lovely attitude.

Livelifeinthebuslane · 20/12/2021 17:01

R4 PM has just said no decision today.

MumbleCrumbs · 20/12/2021 17:02

Looks like the statement was pre-recorded

Vapeyvapevape · 20/12/2021 17:07

R4 PM has just said no decision today

Maybe they must think things aren’t so bad / urgent then .

BrightYellowDaffodil · 20/12/2021 17:08

There's no guarantee that restrictions will be brought in after Christmas, or that they won't just make things advisory. The Times this morning ran a piece saying that ministers are challenging the modelling and are not prepared to bring additional measures in on the basis of modelling that has been consistently wrong. Ministers also consider all the other facets of Covid - mental health, education, economics - whereas SAGE and their incessant crying wolf only look at one aspect.

My guess, looking at the figures and that the up-tick in cases has not led to an uptick in deaths/hospitalisations, which you'd really have expected to have seen by now, is that the data will show additional restrictions aren't needed, particularly when hundreds of thousands of people a day are getting boosters which work against Omicron.

anniegun · 20/12/2021 17:10

One thing we can be sure is that Boris and Carrie will be doing exactly what they planned- regardless of the rules they impose on the rest of us

muldersspeedos · 20/12/2021 17:18

I wish they'd bloody get on with restrictions now if that's what they are going to do in the next couple of days anyway. ASD and uncertainty aren't a good combo in this house. We are going away between Christmas and new year like lots of people probably are and would like to know sooner rather than later if I need to change the dates. But do I want to go anyway if things are this bad that restrictions are being thought about?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/12/2021 17:31

they indeed would not dare to put christmas restrictions on
i dont know how people feel in netherlands

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/12/2021 17:32

further incriminating photos might come out if boris does restrict too much.

puppeteer · 20/12/2021 17:33

if that's what they are going to do in the next couple of days anyway

As I read the situation they are intending not to deploy more restrictions.

They seem to be actively questioning and challenging SAGE models.

These are both novel approaches for our government indeed — but they already make me feel much safer.

But I take your point— we are still a long way from a settled in to this 'new normal'.

But do I want to go anyway if things are this bad that restrictions are being thought about?

As some others have pointed out, there are some promising indicators. (Denmark, and the past few day's case numbers.)

Unless you're thinking of travelling to SA or something (joke) I'd continue to plan ahead.

Live life for the moment. Plan your way out of it later if you have to.

Some of us follow as we are in responsible and professional jobs so intelligent enough to know what we need to do to stay on the right side of the law! You sound like a spoilt child grow up
Happyharry2003 · 20/12/2021 17:38

I don’t want another lockdown. But I do wonder how many people would soon change their minds about having to see family on Christmas Day if it meant schools are then closed. I’ve met so many people ‘desperate’ to be with family but ‘desperate’ to send their kids into school - people who don’t need to. Obviously there are are millions (including me) who have to due to work

mildtomoderate · 20/12/2021 17:38

@Vapeyvapevape

pops head in > Anything official ? No ? As you were

Lol

Pretty sure Boris just confirmed, but your head isn't required in this thread anyway so it's probably better off elsewhere

@MikeWozniaksMohawk thats what I think if your there your probably better staying and travelling home when over as risk is there already

aliceca · 20/12/2021 17:38

If it is advisory, it will make zero difference.
