I thought yesterday they were going to give us the update about what will happen regarding restrictions?

I'd rather know than just be left in the dark. I don't mind whether we have a lockdown, circuit breaker or something else but I'd just like to know!

I personally would rather have seen a two week lockdown while the kids were off school, rather than keeping them out when they should be back. But from reading MN I can see that the majority of people wouldn’t comply.

gogohm · 19/12/2021 16:14

They are looking at data which unlike last year isn't clear cut. Rates have fallen the last two days too. It's a concern but the issue is that a positive test doesn't mean you are ill, they need to work out if we need to take action or not. It's inconvenient to stay at home and causes issues in essential services but if people aren't seriously I'll then the justification for lockdown just isn't there. I would now be surprised if they do anything other than offer advice for Christmas because they would need a political mandate for enforcement. New year however is on far more dodgy ground

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 16:31

I honestly think that the numbers will drop because people won't test or record it and if they are ill they will take a cold remedy and get over it.
It's not a good way of looking at it , but now most of the schools are shut and people want to see people next weekend they will just risk assess it for themselves.

containsnuts · 19/12/2021 16:41

@SickAndTiredAgain

My guess is that we'll hear late on Christmas eve - that's AFTER the Christmas shopping/spending frenzy is over. That way, the economy is 'boosted' before another winter of restrictions.

For restrictions on Christmas Day? That would be way too late, loads of people would already be at relatives’ houses.

Not literally for Christmas day, I meant after christmas/new year/January plans. (Although saying that, remember how last minute restrictions were put in place last time).
aliceca · 19/12/2021 16:50

@gogohm the problem is if they for the data to be clear cut, it will be too late if the data is bad.

the80sweregreat · 19/12/2021 16:56

I can't see them locking anything down to be honest.
I think it'll just limp along for another week and then the figures will drop like a stone.
I'm hoping this will happen ..
you have to have a bit of faith.

aliceca · 19/12/2021 17:19

I agree there wont be a lockdown, they are trying to scare people into doing their own lockdown. But unless they succeed in this, numbers will continue to rise.

I feel I'm more likely than ever to test next week- ahead of having contact with older relatives over Christmas.
CurryandSnuggle · 19/12/2021 23:14

Well I’m travelling to family for Christmas tomorrow as I have no childcare over the Christmas holidays so… hopefully they don’t lock down whilst we’re already there 😂

On a darker note. I really sincerely hope we don’t have another lockdown. I cannot bear to hear more abuse stories that would inevitably increase from lockdowns. Breaks my heart

SickAndTiredAgain · 19/12/2021 23:24

The telegraph this evening is reporting that Johnson is considering three options;
Guidance but not law to limit social contact

Law to limit mixing, reintroduce social distancing and 8pm curfew for pubs and restaurants

Full lockdown

According to the telegraph’s cabinet source, Johnson favours option one, guidance not law. Which I think is what the SNP have done?

WoodenReindeer · 19/12/2021 23:31

Arg i cant read that!

I wonder if we'll have the soft touch first then lockdown.

How bizarre. Mine lets me look for a second then does this.

When will there be an update?
mrshoho · 19/12/2021 23:40

Some sort of additional restrictions starting from 26th is on the cards but who the hell knows as a week in covid times is a lifetime.

Yes, it took me a few tries to get rid of that. Weird.

I hate this not knowing !!

If you open in incognito mode it lets you read it, not much to see but it’s here.

“Boris Johnson is considering urging the public to limit household mixing over Christmas, as he risks a new row with his Cabinet.

The Telegraph understands that the Prime Minister has been presented with three options drawn up by officials for further restrictions to curb the spread of omicron.

The lowest level of intervention would see families asked to limit indoor contacts, without legal enforcement.

However, Mr Johnson is also weighing up option two, which would mandate curbs on household mixing, the return of social distancing and an 8pm curfew on pubs and restaurants. Option three is the return to full lockdown.

However, Cabinet ministers warned on Sunday that such regulations would not be "stomached" by ministers.

The Prime Minister has already suffered the loss of Lord Frost, the Brexit negotiator, over the Plan B Covid measures. The Telegraph has been told one other Cabinet minister would be willing to follow him and quit if lockdown was reimposed.”

DaisyNGO · 20/12/2021 01:26

Can't sleep ☹️

I'd honestly rather know if they were going to do another winter of this.

Booklover3 · 20/12/2021 01:40

Of course he favours option one… it probably means he doesn’t have to financially help anyone

worriedatthemoment · 20/12/2021 01:45

I never get the shut pubs at 8pm , that leaves pubs and people who work in them ( often paid by the hour) finically in the shit.
Its a way for goverments to not have to bail them out
Most people are at work in day so pubs Are quiet and covid will spread in the day as well
As for household mixing I know of one person in real life who sAid they will follow that , many are happy to limit it but thats it

DaisyNGO · 20/12/2021 01:46

@Booklover3

Is there still financial help in other places were hospitality closed early, I wonder. I hear Ireland is doing a curfew for that as well.
Mandyjack · 20/12/2021 17:44

It starts with a circiit breaker of 2/3wks and ends up in several months of lockdown

lindyloo57 · 20/12/2021 18:29

I do feel for the pm, he can't win either way, if we lockdown before Christmas he will be slated, if he leaves it for later he will be slated

aliceca · 20/12/2021 18:34

Option one wouldnt do anything. Those who will be careful are already restricting themselves. Guidance wouldn't influence those who have not changed anything.
I see three behaviours amongst people I know.
Those carrying on as normal
Those cancelling things and restricting themselves
And those mixing more in case a lockdown comes in.
