Massive turn in opinion…

Normando91 · 18/12/2021 23:01

Is it just me or has opinion on a possible lockdown or circuit breaker in the coming days or week completely changed in the past 24 hours?

I hadn’t looked at Sky News in the last 2 days as it all just seemed speculation and bleak but having looked tonight it looks inevitable that we’re going to face some kind of stricter restrictions, most likely after Christmas, but possibly before.

Everyone I’ve spoke to has gone from, no we will not go into lockdown (or further restrictions) to yeah, it’s coming.

Who would have thought we’d be back here a year later from lasts Christmases shit show.

OP posts:

No wonder
That's how the data has been modelled.

OMG12 · 19/12/2021 07:27

It’s strange, I’ve got a new phone and somehow a page from the bbc from Jan last year popped up with Matt Hancock going on about the need for the restrictions and the wonderful vaccine and how it gave us all hope.

Well here we are a year later. Restrictions almost certainly back. - triple jabbed, the only things that have changed is dealing with highly anxious child whose mental health was wrecked by restrictions/covid and dealing with an auto immune disease I know was triggered by the AZ vaccine with doctors refusing to admit it (although I think my Doctor is agreeing more and more). Fucking marvellous

OddBoots · 19/12/2021 07:27

Among the people I know offline there isn't so much a feeling of lockdown but because we all know a handful of people who have tested positive in the past week or two we are quite aware that we are all as risk of our family plans being cancelled if someone tests positives. It feels like a roll of the dice at the moment.

TulipsGarden · 19/12/2021 07:34

@5zeds

I really don’t understand people’s obsession with Christmas get togethers. Phone your family and tell them you love them. Go for a walk together if you must. We aren’t children unable to understand why. We can meet when it’s safer and do other things till then.
I agree. We've already planned a family get together with the households we'd usually see at Christmas for the summer instead, because there are a few vulnerable people and it's not worth the risk to see them now.

I won't be seeing my parents this year as my dad is ill and I want to keep him out of hospital. I'll see them when things calm down. My MIL is aghast that I won't see my parents at Christmas again, but I'd rather be more certain of seeing them in future!

TheKeatingFive · 19/12/2021 07:34

The ramping up fear to drive compliance has gone way too far now. The morals of it are extremely questionable.

OMG12 · 19/12/2021 07:36

Oh I suppose the other thing that has changed is Matt Hancock is gone.after having his HANDS all over another woman’s arse, snogging her FACE off and getting very much in her SPACE. Sorry if that was CHEESY didn’t mean to W(H)INE.

NotAnotherCrapHamper · 19/12/2021 07:41

I think that the I do not go out/to the pub is interesting

Everyone I know with Cv19a ta the moment got it through children at school. No-one from the pub or the pantomime. All known transmission.

romatheroamer · 19/12/2021 07:46

Some of those nutjobs on the Tory back benches are enough to make me wear my mask in the house, even in bed!!
But seriously though, it's interesting how public opinion seems not to support them.

Exactly! About fucking time people are catching on.

I think the major shift I'm seeing (FINALLY) is people saying they won't comply and aren't ok with another 6 months in lockdown - which, let's be clear is the government's plan, regardless of any circuit break rubbish they might spout now. People are finally, finally standing up and saying no to this being life and it's giving me some hope in the darkness.

I also think they're going to struggle to hide the data on how overwhelmingly dangerous the new variant isn't once it's been peer reviewed. I really hope it doesn't lead to the sort of social unrest seen in Europe, but suspect it could. People are fed up of losing jobs/ homes/ lives so the middle class (of whom I'm one, I'm not excusing myself) can sit at home and be smugly safe.

This is spot on. There's also a major shift on MN too - the last two lockdowns a lot of opinion on here was for lockdowns but not yesterday
herecomesthsun · 19/12/2021 07:55

People will react differently; some will choose not to comply; but lots will be careful, whether or not further restrictions are formalised. That's what we are actually seeing.

Exhausteddog · 19/12/2021 07:55

Last year we missed MILs last Xmas. We couldn't have gone on a walk because they were in their 80s and unable to walk far. She was diagnosed with cancer 2 weeks after Xmas and died 6 weeks later. We did meet later for a "family get together" It was her funeral. Sad

Bettyboopawoop · 19/12/2021 08:04

Omg having been a frequenter on the Btf pages there are a number of people that have ended up with thyroid issues and Graves dieases after having the vaccination or having Graves flair ups, I ended up in hospital around a month after having the vaccination with a thyroid storm now I am petrified of having the 2nd vaccine and I keep being hounded to have it.

Remmy123 · 19/12/2021 08:05

There will be a lockdown in January

Willyoujustbequiet · 19/12/2021 08:07

Yes, I agree. Most people I know have gone from starting to be a bit laidback to taking it seriously again as locally our rates have exploded. Everyone around me is cancelling stuff and no one is meeting indoors again. Seems pretty sensible really.

cptartapp · 19/12/2021 08:08

I can take or leave Xmas. My parents are dead so we see IL's which isn't a barrel of laughs anyway tbh.
It's my older teen DC I fear for. Back to remote learning with all hobbies shut down. They're fully jabbed and on risk v benefit, are out socialising for all they're worth this week with my blessing, because if what lies ahead is like last winter then they need all the normality they can while they can.
If IL's choose to see us, that's up to them.

malificent7 · 19/12/2021 08:11

Well given that the Tories had a big party last xmas i'd say it's a no brainer...im going to see family. We are all vaccinated so what is the issue?

I agree but then I find it odd that people keep testing.

If they don’t want lockdowns / restrictions the easiest thing to do is simply stop testing. No one will have any idea what the rates of covid are, it will become just another virus / cold and we can stop this whole isolation / lockdown stuff.

Or - are they genuinely saying the vaccines don’t work and if we do that the NHS will become overwhelmed?

Or will the NHS become overwhelmed because too many people are off isolating when they feel otherwise well?

Which is it?

Foolsrule · 19/12/2021 08:32

For everyone saying they’re going on carry on regardless, will you simply not test? And potentially spread Covid and infect others?

Squeezita · 19/12/2021 08:35

Who would have thought we’d be back here a year later from lasts Christmases shit show.

Erm, the experts?

They’ve always said there would be a massive spike next winter.

chaosrabbitland · 19/12/2021 08:37

@LadyCatStark

That’s the governments plan though, drip feed us information so that we come round to the idea before they announce it.
well they can drip feed all they want , i wont be coming around to it and i wont be complying with any lockdown , obviously if places are shut i wont be able to go in them , but i will be seeing family , just like i have in all the lockdowns and going out whenever i want , i never abided by that only go out to buy essential items crap anyway

If you have a relatively mild version of CV, why would you get tested? that means no pay (for most people) and no xmas.

Huge disincentive to test, yet even so, we have the highest levels in Europe, as we have since the early days.

well iv never tested ever and not about to start now , if i felt like i actually had all the symtoms of covid then i would ,but until then no

This was the point I was making in my post above yours. Either the vaccines work or they don’t - we need to know which it is. If they work and everyone is going to either be symptomless or have a mild illness (apart from a very unfortunate few) then what on earth are we doing testing and isolating?! Utter madness.
