… there’s a weekend meeting of SAGE & government…Oh the anxiety.

I’m supposed to be flying to see my family for Christmas on Tuesday. I am kicking myself for not booking to go earlier! If they announce lockdown before Christmas we’re all shafted aren’t we …?!

@LittleRoundRobin

The Government can fuck right off if they they think everyone will comply. Who do they think they are? How DARE they even suggest a lockdown after they broke all the rules themselves?

EVERYONE needs to refuse to comply. All businesses/shops/restaurants etc... EVERYONE.

Wow, this is far bigger than your personal annoyance at how unfair life is and how people break the rules. Please consider the actual reasons lockdown may be necessary. 80% of those in hospital with covid aren't vaccinated. That means 20% are. That's 1 in 5 people who are in hospital with covid are vaccinated. Lockdown protects those people and the staff. The staff are burnt out, utterly exhausted and it's idiots who will selfishly go again the rules on principal who will make it worse for everyone.

The daily Mail statistics are so hard to understand, this is up , that is down etc etc
( it's not behind a pay wall , so it is my go to online paper :(
They quote Sage a lot , it is so hard to drill down into what is going on and Sage are generally wanting a circuit breaker or lockdown I guess.
Any new restrictions coming up will be leaked to them no doubt (tomorrow is my bet. )
I just hope the figures for admissions to hospital stay very low

Abraxan · 18/12/2021 18:12

I don't think they'll do anything til after Christ,as. I think they know compliance wouldn't be very high.

I suspect we may get increased restrictions after Christmas - but even then shops and schools will be open. Be more like wfh if you can (like it's supposed to be now, though don't know anyone locally doing this) and potentially indoor meetings restricted to number of households/people and maybe trying to push things outdoors - always fun in January!

containsnuts · 18/12/2021 18:16

Momentsmatter

"I'm annoyed that I have to stop my Christmas celebrations because people can't be bothered to be locked down in January and February"

It seems emotions are running high on this thread and people aren't thinking clearly.

I'll come back later.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 18/12/2021 18:17

It would be a political disaster to announce it before Xmas, but arguably if they leave it until 27th the horse will have bolted?

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 18/12/2021 18:17

The Netherlands going into tight lockdown from Sunday has just flashed up as a BBC news breaking story.

Agree that our so-called government should come out and say what they're doing. Last year it was
I think 19 December when the tightened restrictions were announced?

The one date I’ve seen on graphs thread from modeller is around this date for peak

So maybe it wasn’t far off to say this, of course modellers don’t always say same

Libertybauble · 18/12/2021 18:19

Not anxious because I will not be ‘locked down’ regardless of what the government says. Obviously if shops etc are shit there’s nothing I can do about that but if they expect me to go back to not travelling beyond 5 miles, only going out once a day, only seeing people outside, they are deluded.

Libertybauble · 18/12/2021 18:20

Shut!

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 18:22

It'll probably be ' lockdown very lite' if anything
Full lockdown won't happen because they can't afford it.
Just have to see what happens, but it is gloomy which way you look at it.
Plus it's the uncertainty that doesn't help matters.

Sparklingbrook · 18/12/2021 18:24

@Daisydoor12

All these “leaked” reports do nothing for people’s mental health. It’s probably done to “test the water”.

I think everyone has to do what is right for them. This is nearly 2 years in now everyone’s situation is different and no one has the right to criticise/comment on people’s decisions.

I agree and SHOUTING about it on MN will make not a shred of difference. All the foot stamping and the 'I will not comply fuck that' etc. Just do it or don't do it, no need for an announcement.
countrygirl99 · 18/12/2021 18:26

I'm trustee of a Riding For The Disabled centre. Our costs are changed the same whether we can operate or not, the ponies still need feeding and looking after and the coaches and admin staff are volunteers. We are still not up to full capacity because we lost an intake of volunteers and Special Schools are still very cautious about outside activities and we have had fewer fund raising events than usual. 2020 we received grants that meant our deficit wasn't too bad but those year no grants snd our deficit will be over £20,000. I don't know if we will survive another lockdown.

You're much more likely to be either shafted by the country you're visiting not letting you in, or quarantining you on arrival, or the same at the UK end when you return.

I don't think there'll be a change in restrictions at UK side preventing you going.

Octavia174 · 18/12/2021 18:37

IF tighter restrictions are required, then they should do it now, with a doubling rate every 2 days, an 8 day wait will make the LD then have to be far longer and stricter than going earlier.

Thats the lesson of CV over the last 2 years and why we have such an appalling death rate.

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 18:39

It does cause so much anxiety.
Social media , 24 hour rolling news, even forums like this all adds to it as well :(
I wished they would tell us what is what , but it's all mixed messages and people speculating about things ( including the experts)
All the time

Guacamole001 · 18/12/2021 18:39

I still think it is madness to contemplate restrictions/circuit breaker over 65 hospital cases!

I understand they have to be careful but surely the daily cases will lower soon. Arent we all getting our boosters after all.

justasking111 · 18/12/2021 18:40

Monday 27th, they'll Knock NYE on the head I suspect

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 18:43

I am guessing that the 65 will go up soon ..
I hope it doesn't , but why have all these cobra meetings and what not ?
It's all just causing so much anxiety

Ch4 reported that 1m people over 65 have not had a single vaccine.

My DD was doing domiciliary care, so many vulnerable people are on waiting lists to get a booster, they can't use these super size vaccine centres and rely on someone to come out to them, which in her exp isn't happening.

The booster take 7 to 10 days to work against Omicron.

65 is that right?

I can’t combine that with major incident declared in London

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 18/12/2021 18:51

Guardian now reporting that the 65 hospital cases with Omicron has gone up to 85, and deaths are up from 1 to 7

Not sure that will reconcile many people to lockdown

ChequerBoard · 18/12/2021 18:53

65 is the number patients in hospital with Covid that have so far been identified as having Omicron.

There are currently 1,534 Covid patients in London hospitals alone - up 28.6% on last week.

It's important to know that when hospitals do a PCR test for COVID, they only get a positive or negative. The genotyping tests which tell them which variant it is take longer, and they aren't routinely sent them. So they don’t know in real time whether they are treating omicron or delta.

Moonpiglets · 18/12/2021 18:56

@Guacamole001 - I think it is based on the modelling of what will happen next, based on the amount of people currently infected and the people they will come into contact with

If we had locked down in this country when there were only a couple of covid cases in the UK - with no-one in hospital - it would have been based on future predictions (and stopping what we have now) rather than on the situation at that time

guardiansofthegalaxychocs · 18/12/2021 19:02

@BarefootHippieChick

Rumours (if they are to be believed) is that it will start on the 27th, bars, cafes and restaurants will only be able to serve outside, and no indoor mixing. Nothing has been mentioned about schools so they may (hopefully) go back in January as normal. Many people will still mix indoors with family and friends, and let's face it, I can't see many getting fined as they haven't been so far.
Makes sense, it's a relatively cheap measure and there will be higher compliance in January (when everyone was poor) than if they attempted to cancel Christmas. I cancelled our Christmas last year but it was heartbreaking and family zooms this year are all very much "it's happening whatever Boris might say"
