Am I the only that finds all of these press conferences a bit narcissistic? I'm probably being uncharitable, but it feels like they partly happen like this to boost the PM's ego...

no you're mot the only one. I suspect tomorrow's Shropshire by election has influenced the decision to run this party political broadcast. ..

Definitely! Distract distract distract.

Is there an election tomorrow?! He shouldn't be allowed to brag about how many vaccines we ha e then
WoodenReindeer · 15/12/2021 17:40

Yes your general point is a good one....

VikingOnTheFridge · 15/12/2021 17:40

@containsnuts

Re booster roll-out - if it's true that the booking lines were jammed, and venues had queues around the block as described in yesterday's press, why do they feel the need to keep pushing the matter so aggressively?
There's a by election tomorrow and the Dear Leader would like something other than his social arrangements last Christmas to be the main story.
Charley50 · 15/12/2021 17:40

I'm gonna watch it just to see the signer..

Jng1 · 15/12/2021 17:41

I know there's lots of criticism of things like the slogans 'Get boosted nOw' and 'jabathon' etc, the sad fact is that they do this because a large % of the population responds to this kind of 'Sun Headline' simplification. Just think back to the whole Brexit thing and the tabloid type headlines which swayed people.

'Jabathon' normalises the booster programme. People like to do what everyone else is doing. This isn't just Boris making a bad joke - it's calculated, persuasive language. [Disclaimer - I worked in public health in Smoking Cessation/ Teenage Pregnancy Prevention/ Healthy eating programmes at the same time the infamous 'Nudge Unit' was set up]

Westfacing · 15/12/2021 17:41

Problem with Peston and Newton Dunn is they ask too many questions at once, so the pertinent ones to Bozo get lost.

HeronLanyon · 15/12/2021 17:43

Oh god ‘phenomenal pace’. Bloody he’ll just thought again I need to update my will. Astonishing we might be here again. Let’s hope mortality data is encouraging when we understand more.

julieca · 15/12/2021 17:43

@Jng1 but they do nothing to properly address the real reasons people are not getting boosted.

Westfacing · 15/12/2021 17:43

These events are beginning to look like an excuse to 'big up' Bozo, in an attempt to make him look like a serious politician.

MissPeregrine · 15/12/2021 17:43

@Westfacing agree, he should just just asked BJ that ONE question and wait for him to answer

MissPeregrine · 15/12/2021 17:44

Although they seem to want their ‘15 minutes of question’ fame - so will ask multiple questions, therefore diluting the SLAM DUNK question! Grin

No shit of course it is persuasive language thats the whole point Confused. I don't think we need Shakespeare to scrutinise this one.
Mydogmylife · 15/12/2021 17:44

@Lipsandlashes

A milder illness is still devastating to the health service if enough people have it. How so? Do you regularly bother your GP or A&E with a cold or even flu? I know I certainly don't!
Work it out ! Massive numbers of people self isolating and being offwork will reduce the staff available in the nhs to deal with any other emergencies, cancer care etc.
PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets · 15/12/2021 17:46

Has boris answered a question yet?

One that he's been asked, not one that he's made up in his own head.

BestZebbie · 15/12/2021 17:47

Aha! I’ve now found the exact wording of the quotes that came to mind when hearing about the 2am vaccination volunteers (who are doing a bloody good job, non-sarcastic well done to them):

“Boxer was the admiration of everybody. He had been a hard worker even in Jones's time, but now he seemed more like three horses than one; there were days when the entire work of the farm seemed to rest on his mighty shoulders."

“He had made an arrangement with one of the cockerels to call him in the mornings half an hour earlier than anyone else, and would put in some volunteer labour at whatever seemed to be most needed, before the regular day's work began."

the80sweregreat · 15/12/2021 17:47

People are not getting any jabs because they think they will be poisoned, lose their natural immunity , it's all a hoax , it's all about the money , the scientists are telling lies, they hate governments, they hate Johnson , they don't agree with masks or restrictions they want it all to just go away.
Just from a few people I know ..

Turquoisesol · 15/12/2021 17:48

I misunderstood what whitty was saying about South Africa. Was it that they had really good immunity from natural infection which may have reduced severity of omicron?

Westfacing · 15/12/2021 17:48

I think the experts should refuse to appear at any more of these press events.

They could always hold their own - no politicians allowed.

Scbchl · 15/12/2021 17:49

But Omicron doesn't kill half the percentage of people than Delta..its even lower going by Africa who have had it much longer than us and who have had less vaccinated. They have came out and saif this and said repeatedly how mild it is.

My son has it right now. He's had no vaccinations due to his age and has had sore eyes for two days and that's it.

chaosrabbitland · 15/12/2021 17:49

@Charles11

Oh yes of course. More terrifying numbers so we all sit quivering in fear at home while they quaff champers at parties laughing at us all.
exactly this , they have already instilled the terror in people , i cannot understand the masses falling for it, working on a healthcare counter its alarming how many people were coming in for their blasted lft and getting all antsy when i had to explain to them they need a code now for us to hand them out , terrified they have to bloody test themselves how many times a week just because theres a new varient .

i will be at home fuming with rage it they even mention lockdowns

Bubblty · 15/12/2021 17:50

@Westfacing

Problem with Peston and Newton Dunn is they ask too many questions at once, so the pertinent ones to Bozo get lost.
Agree. They've always done this and it does my head in. Ask one question then they can't duck out of it.
Jng1 · 15/12/2021 17:50
@Jng1 but they do nothing to properly address the real reasons people are not getting boosted.
I don't know which specific reasons you're thinking of, but if this approach works for even a subset of the population then it is worth it.
Some people will never respond to highly technical, logical and scientific approach, but if they begin to believe that "this is normal and what everyone else is doing" then they are likely to follow.
It's all about making it accessible. Same reason as setting up vaccination stations in football stadia and mosques - places that certain groups find more convenient and less threatening than a lot of medical environments.

the80sweregreat · 15/12/2021 17:50

The scientists do have their own briefings, I watched one with JVT, a man talking about vaccines and someone else the other week on sky news ( can't remember names , sorry )
Not a politician in sight !
