Please can someone explain what Chris meant when he said “if it halves then it will still double and then we’ll be back to where we were before”? (Or something similar to that)

It seems he was making a very important point but I got a bit lost at that point

(And this isn’t a piss take question, I really want to understand what he was explaining!)

I think it's that even if this variant means you are 50% less likely to end up in hospital, because it spreads so quickly, it only has to double once (the cases) for the rate of hospitalisation to be the same.

If delta kills 100 a day but omicron only kills 50, that is good. Except tomorrow, omicron has doubled (because it is still growing exponentially) so tomorrow both kill 100. It isn’t “half as dangerous” anymore because twice as many people have got it.

@moonpiglets if half the people are hospitalised with omicron compared to delta, but it's more transmissable so twice as many people have it then you end up with the same number of people in hospital.

Basically, if you have half the chance of needing to go to hospital when infected, but the number of people is doubling very quickly, then you soon have the same number, or more, people in hospital and we still have a massive problem...

If it’s 10 in week 1 and halves to 5 in week two. Week three it will rise to 30 so any halving to 15 in week 4 is still a huge increase.
This is the problem. Even if hospitalisation or death reduces in percentage of number of Covid cases because the numbers of Covid cases are going through the roof even if percentage of hops or death carries on falling those number will keep going up.

If anything, we underreported deaths.

The Conservative aides were having parties because they were young (and a bit stupid).

Im getting sick of not mentioning 100,000s who had covid in last few weeks we can’t have a booster. It’s awful kept being told our only chance is a booster yet can’t have it. Not even making it clear you have to wait 28 days.

I am struggling with the doubling thing , but I've never had a scientific brain.
The scientists probably want more restrictions, but for now they have to go with this way forwards I guess?

You should search for the recent NZ press conference where the NZ PM accidentally barged her out the way and then blocked her from view so the signer crept round the back of her and reappeared in the middle of the shot.

Oh, we don’t want Scientists telling us about restrictions. That needs to be done the proper way, by leaking to the Press 24 hours before it happens.
